  1. Here is a partial BA scouting report for Lewin Diaz: Twins Sign No. 15 International Prospect Lewin Diaz - BaseballAmerica.com
  2. Perhaps you underestimate just how much that family is worth.
  3. Please don't misunderstand. This type of profiteering bothers me immensely.
  4. I understand your point here, but I just think this type of article goes so far beyond baseball and what percentage of revenues go into payroll that it is comical to try and make that connection. I would never argue that the Pohlad family fails to makes money off the Twins, but it is probably not much more than a rounding error on a yearly basis.
  5. This made me chuckle.
  6. If this type of behavior even mildly upsets you, I would highly recommend never looking into Wall Street banking practices of the past couple of decades. Carl Pohlad was a miser his entire life, why would anyone expect anything less at his death?
  7. That is a bomb. Kepler is going to be a beast.
  8. Doogie Wolfson also said there are 4 other signings, but he didn't say the names. So Twins do work fast, just don't get it to Baseball America right away. And they even spend some money. On quality players.
  9. No one is getting excited about the confirmed signing of Top 10 (MLB)/15 (BA) guy Lewin Diaz? EDIT: $1.4 mil. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/prospects/watch/y2013/#list=int #10 on the link above.
  10. Remains to be seen what value is received overall, not just in trades but production. Despite my mild snarkiness I actually really liked the moves the Cubs made outside of Jackson. They have a plan and they are aggressively pursuing it. This is actually one aspect I would like to see the Twins adjust slightly. It is the difference between progressive and strategic vs. conservative and methodical. The Twins way isn't "bad" per se but it does limit some opportunities for arbitrage on account of enhanced stability.
  11. I wouldn't panic until the three guys Twins most attached to sign elsewhere. But I agree, let's get moving here.
  12. This. But it is probably time to get him in some lower leverage situations. Fien can handle the role for the time being.
  13. Texas spent more money that is correct. But "bare minimum" is extremely disingenuous. They signed a couple of top 30 prospects and spent comparable to any non-Texas team and more than many other teams. I know I'm a raging homer but I find that to be an acceptable investment.
  14. Backloaded contracts served two purposes. It was a relic of the old arb days when value was partially based on the salary of the last season. There is also the concept of future value of money. It is more valuable for the team to have the money collecting interest and then paying later when money is cheaper because of inflation issues. One final point. Paying the majority early and then lower amounts later to be more valuable in a trade is fine, nut that would make potential prospects quite expensive. Might as well cover a portion of the contract at the time of the trade - it would have the same effect.
  15. Sure Lannan. I grant there is a chance he could have been a slight upgrade on Pelfrey and/or Correia. Probably not enough of a reason to acquire him for the right to pay twice as much as he got as a free agent. Perhaps the Twins should have signed him.
  16. If he keeps performing opening day 2015 might be conservative.
  17. The idea of credibility is vastly overrated in my opinion. Players are going to sign the best deal for themselves every time. Another key point is that when Perkins signed his contract it was not a clear hometown discount (even if it looks like it now). He had failed as a starter and had only one really good year as a reliever, so there was definitely plenty of risk borne by the Twins at the time of the deal. Perkins took the guaranteed $11.5 mil when he had the chance.
  18. Interesting, I just did a search of MLB.com stats. I will never trust them again. Not sure why Tulo, Cabrera, Gregarious didn't show up.
  19. Clearly out. http://cjzero.com/gifs/MorneauOutYankees1st.gif
  20. You realize that only 6 mlb shortstops are at the .750 level right? And one of those is Peralta, who won't exactly hit the defensive standard that you strive for (and Lowrie and Desmond aren't exactly great defenders either). Florimon would actually rank in the top half if he had enough abs.
  21. I'm not overly impressed with a guy who spent most of his age 27 season at AAA, but if the Twins would have wanted him they could have signed him for less than the arby figure as a free agent. There was no reason to include him in the trade.
  22. It was a response to someone complaining about giving up Span. I think there is a lot of time to go before the full verdict of that trade can be made.
  23. Shoulders are dicey but probably a little premature to call Meyer dead.
  24. Securing the right to pay Lannan twice as much through arby as he got as a free agent doesn't exactly seem like added value.
