  1. Another example of how the Twins under Ryan don't spend enough. He might have been the top bat in the international market last year.
  2. They have the past 4 years and have the 4th most money to spend.
  3. I'll provide the obvious spoiler alert: payroll will be lower at the start of next season than it was at the start of this season regardless of what enhanced revenues they have. The primary reason is that expensive veterans will be replaced primarily by internal options that will be making the minimum or inexpensive veteran bench bats or relievers. They will sign a quality free agent or two but not enough to make up for free agent departures or players traded, and certainly not enough to make up gor the increased TV revenue. The other issue is that there just aren't going to be enough good free agents for the Twins to spend their money on and there will be plenty of other teams with cash competing for that limited supply. The $25 mil the Twins get that supposedly should go straight to payroll will be there for all other franchises as well. There are not $750 mil worth of free agents hitting the market. The good news in all of this is the team will almost certainly be better, perhaps even a fringe contender. But if you are basing your expectations for next year on payroll level you will be severly disappointed.
  4. Generous of you to use the stat that measures how many runs actually scored.
  5. Why does evidence matter? If you keep repeating something it eventually becomes true.
  6. Attendance is down. Most fans care about the quality of the product not the exact payroll amount or what percent of revenues that equates to.
  7. Gibson should have been up two months ago but a couple of thoughts. Arby is no longer an excuse so the Twins must be concerned about something else. Also, Gibson might not really be much more than a 3 or 4. The longer he is down the higher our expectations become. That is a mistake and is setting up for disappointment. That said, it is beyond time. Get him up.
  8. So you are going to use every tool you can to criticize Correia while doing everything you can to defend Marcum. I for one appreciate your continued balanced approach to analysis. I would say again that I preferred the Twins signed Marcum and McCarthy this offseason, but the Twins probably made a better move by taking a guy who hasn't gotten hurt.
  9. What credibility does Peter Gammons have?
  10. I just glanced at his season totals, they weren't all that great. I would also state that I wanted Marcum in the offseason and wasn't all that thrilled with the Correia signing. On the flip side, Marcum has already missed a month, which solid numbers in the past month or not, is a major strike against a guy on a one year deal.
  11. I agree. I was a little skeptical at first and thought it might be harmful in bringing in talent but it does work. The cost is that amateur players make a little less money and a few more prep players go to college or perhaps another sport.
  12. Fair enough. I just looked at his full season stats.
  13. It wouldn't bother me if he was one of the guys smoking. Poor judgment perhaps, but hey 18.
  14. Boom
  15. He is not even the most important pitching prospect in the organization right now.
  16. I wouldn't trade him unless I was convinced this is the best that he has to offer. Twins are in position to find out his upside, and his power plays perfectly at Target Field. I don't think he has a future at 3B (or SS or 2B) but could have enough stick to play a corner. I would also look at it this way, Plouffe is exactly the type of player the Twins should try to acquire from other teams.
  17. My favorite post in this thread was the implication that Smith got fired because he spends too much money. That gave me a chuckle. I also love the conspiracy theory type thoughts involving payroll and profiteering. That never gets old, boring or tired.
  18. I recommend looking at the size of TV contracts. That drives payroll much more than attendance.
  19. I also wanted Marcum but he missed the first month or so of the season and hasn't been all that effective since he returned. I think they tried for Saunders but were rebuffed for geographical reasons among others. I wouldn't have wanted to go two years it probably would have taken. He hasn't exactly lit it up either.
  20. I'll grant Dempster (who wouldn't have signed here) but the other three are not really better than Correia. That was always the problem with free agent pitchers last offseason.
  21. Are you referring to the same constraints Ryan worked with his first time around?
  22. Terry Ryan doesn't care about pitching or guys who miss bats? You are aware he traded two starting caliber CFs last offseason for those types of guys right?
  23. The opening day roster had 11 home grown players, 9 free agents, 3 guys via trade and 2 waiver claims. They use all methods.
  24. OK, if they don't pursue Sanchez or Jackson who is actually left from the free agent market from last offseason? How can you take the position of not signing the top guys but instead sign some other mythical alternatives? Correia and Pelfrey are obviously nothing great but that was the next tier that you just advocated they sign from. They did commit $14.5 mil total to free agents after $35 mil the previous offseason.
  25. I agree with the first sentence. In regards to the second half very few small market teams trade prospects for established players (ie the Rays). Unrealistic to expect much different from the Twins. But I'll add Kielty for Stewart.
