  1. This is certainly possible but worst case in my opinion. Pitching should be better next season as some younger arms replace the current dregs. Hitting really can't get worse. Sano will be up most of the year, Hicks and Arcis should progress a little, perhaps some improvement in the Doziers of the world, and a clearing out of unproductive veterans. They won't be world series contenders but they will be better.
  2. I personally have no problem with this. I think the issue will be a lack of supply of worthwhile free agents. Twins will want a corner bat and a starting pitcher. The former will be relatively cheap and the latter will not even be at a Sanchez level - those two signings won't offset the salary coming off the books.
  3. Carroll will be a "thanks for your service good luck as a backup on a contender" type of trade. They won't get anything worthwhile for him other than a little salary relief. I disagree that Pinto can jump in next year and equal what Doumit is doing. He is fine depth but Doumit has a clear role, especially at the beginning of the season. That is enough future value to hold on to him.
  4. You might be right but that is far from a guarantee. I don't say this to defend a lack of spending but more as an acknowledgement that this team is probably closer than you give it credit for. I think they sign a decent pitcher and probably a bat but won't spend what people want. In fact I almost guarantee payroll goes down but the team ends up as a fringe contender.
  5. It was actually announced today by Rob Antony that he will make his first GCL start on Saturday. 45-50 pitches. And like Snepp I don't really care all that much, but wouldn't be surprised if he makes starts later in the year.
  6. I didn't do anything to it...Too unfair to Gleeman?
  7. My prediction is Willingham, Burton and Carroll get traded. Correia is a long shot, just find it doubtful any team gives up enough to make it worthwhile. A couple other points: -I suspect Willingham's value last year was lower than most people think. Obviously it was higher than right now so the Twins would have gotten something more valuable, but they still would have had an obvious hole at the position that would have needed to get filled last offseason. -Why do people want to trade Doumit? He is not going to bring much value in return, and he fills an obvious need for the Twins next year and is signed to a very reasonable contract. I think you make a deadline trade for three reasons: 1. The player is going to be a free agent and does not fit into your plans for next year (think Carroll or possibly Morneau). 2. The player has an obvious replacement that will be ready by the start of next season, or you have confidence that you can fill the hole in free agency the next offseason (think Willingham, Burton and/or Correia). 3. The value offered is too high to say no (think Perkins).
  8. The only thing that will bring back the average fan is winning. It will matter very little how much is spent (either way) to get to that point.
  9. The Twins don't need to dump salary. I just don't see a good reason to take back money and get a marginal prospect. If that is the best they can do might as well keep him and figure it out after the season.
  10. JJ Cooper was at a Cedar Rapids game and tweeted "Just watched Buxton play. I need a cigarette and I don't smoke." So yes, he is a little bit of a fan.
  11. This is a big part of my thinking. I really like Rosario and think he will be a nice player, but he is not an elite difference maker like the others mentioned and there are other options in the system (and maybe even Dozier figures it out). That type of asset can be traded for the right pitcher. As mentioned though that is not Gallardo.
  12. I'm against the full on blow it up rebuild being advocated by a few people here. First, I like it when the Twins win. Second, this team is further along than we may have thought gokng into the season. Competing as soon as next year might be realistic. Third, some of the guys mentioned in these trades could very much contribute to the team next year. In addition, the return for these guys will be minimal. What is the point of trading Doumit? He is signed for a reasonable contract next year, fits a need, isn't blocking a significant prospect, and wont result in much return. He has value to the Twins. Fourth, I think there is value in a winning culture (or at least a competent culture). The Twins are breaking in several young players this year that will hopefully form a successful core going forward, and I believe that is done easier on a somewhat successful team as opposed to starting from scratch. I am not opposed to a few smart trades - maybe Willingham and Burton, perhaps some guys that won't be on the roster next year. In short, only players with clear replacements for this year.
  13. I highly doubt salary is the constraint in these situations. Much more about lack of pitchers available to acquire and the cost in prospects it will take to acquire said pitchers.
  14. I think you meant two months. That is exactly the sample size we need to declare Liriano is back.
  15. Age to league guys are by far the biggest bust risks.
  16. I understand the Rosario position but there is a massive difference betwren ss and 2b. And just because I would trade him it would have to be for the right pitcher - one better than Gallardo.
  17. I would be all for getting Lee but I highly doubt they entertain thoughts of moving him. They don't need to dump salary.
  18. If the draft guaranteed talent would be dispersed in a linear manner perhaps there would be some benefit to losing. But this obviously not the case. Win games and scout well.
  19. You are probably correct. This was more a hypothetical statement than a direct response. It would take a big package to get Gallardo, I'm not sure I would do it considering health risks associated with drops in velocity and k rate.
  20. Outside of Buxton, Sano and Meyer I would trade anyone in the minors for the right pitcher.
  21. Starts at least with Rosario and May (and probably even a better pitcher).
  22. Kepler bomb. He is going to be a monster.
  23. I would rank: 1. San Francisco - gorgeous views, great food 2. PNC 3. Target Field 4. Wrigley Field 5. Great American (Cincinnati) - perfectly fine. 6. Toronto 7. Houston - More reason why I'm glad there is not a retractable roof on Target Field. Way too gimmicky. 8. Miller Park - I agree with you. Dislike it more every time I go. 9. Metrodome I have a lot more parks that I need to visit.
  24. Would you think his k rate would also regress? Would that cancel out the expected drop in babip to maintain similar overall production?
  25. The problem with Hendriks was (is) stuff. No amount of time in AAA can change that. Here is very much hoping that isn't a problem for Gibson.
