  1. Yes, I expect it, but not because of the save stat.
  2. Don't you sense that this battle is already over on the field? It was a good run though. There are still closers, but only because relievers are generally assigned pretty solid roles. And these roles are assigned for reasons beyond chasing statistics.
  3. Probably nothing. Likely just wants to be #1 or close to home.
  4. I understand maximizing pitches in the bigs, but this strikes me as a terrible idea for development. Really setting him up for failure.
  5. I agree. it seems everyone in the pen is stretched a level in their current role. There are some acceptable pieces to round out a pen, but they clearly lack the elite guys at the backend.
  6. I don't think the Twins should give up on Tonkin, but I also don't get why people think the Twins should structure their bullpen to get him only one inning stints and primarily against RHHs. He'd probably be better at it, but I assume that would be the case for most relievers. He's the 5th RH in the pen right now. That's going to lead to more low leverage, multi-inning appearances. If others falter or get hurt, he'll get his chance, but hasn't exactly done anything to earn it any sooner.
  7. He's on the 40 man. If he keeps this up he will, even if it is September.
  8. I think we can all agree that no matter what the Twins front office spends it isn't enough.
  9. In my mind, the only two local media sources worth following for Twins information.
  10. Very little chance he goes to either of those two teams unless he doesn't like money.
  11. This stat is a clear improvement on a save/hold, but I'm not sure it would lead to that significant of a difference in bullpen usage. And the gains it would lead to are pretty much happening organically. If it was adopted, would probably lead to more money for middle relievers in arbitration years, but not sure it would change free agent contracts or other player valuation all that much.
  12. I'm going with Cardinals. They have the most money and no high draft picks next year.
  13. I'm generally libertarian in allowing peds into sports, but Greenies are not even close to as effective as Steroids on performance. Way different ballgame. But I do agree we have no idea the extent of PEDs in previous generations, one of the reason that I don't get too sanctimonious about current drug use. Plus, baseball is by far the most effective and serious professional sport - but there are limits to what they can do.
  14. I personally think cumulative agr is a pretty meaningless metric for farm systems. Teams fill around prospects with a variety of strategies. What matters in my mind is how supported the core prospects are, are they getting reps at the right level, are they developing. The bigger issue is the total talent level in the minors. It can go hand in hand with age, but certainly doesn't need to.
  15. And that loss would have still happened if they had 12 pitchers and Vargas on the roster. I absolutely, 100% support replacing Danny Santana at this point. I thought he was worth an initial look, but I don't think it is going to work out.
  16. I support getting rid of Santana at this point.
  17. Plus, this is all an effort to get Vargas to the bigs, right? I like Vargas, think he should get another shot, would even like him up now, and have some hope he might do ok, but it's not like he's a surefire solution to any of the problems that have arisen. I have a little skepticism that the current arrangement has cost the team even one game, much less multiple.
  18. Chargois hasn't pitched a game yet. He's not as ready as they are at the moment. Again, I think this is relatively short term, but there is a reason they are waiting.
  19. I agree with you that it isn't a big issue of that specific pitcher when there are clear options behind him in the minors. I'm thinking of a situation where Tonkin is cut to bring up Vargas, then a day or two later Pressly has a sore shoulder. That would cause a problem.
  20. I don't think pitching depth is a minor problem. Ever. And if the front office really thought this way, they could easily DFA Santana and bring up a different player.
  21. I'm not as concinced as you are that random pitcher x would not matter. I also think it would be a bigger problem than a short bench.
  22. Chargois and O'Rourke are literally not options right now. They aren't going to put Melotakis or Burdi in the bigs in the short term (but perhaps soon). And Boshers is only on the 40 man because they haven't needed to remove him yet, he's terrible. The 40 man roster construction and lack of ready prospects (partially due to injury) leaves them in a depth bind. It is relatively short term, but it is real. They would rather ride out a short bench a little longer instead of taking the risk with pitching depth. I don't blame them.
  23. But they don't have 4 or 5 at this moment, it is closer to 0, maybe 1. That's kind of the point I've been suggesting. If that was true they likely would have made a move by now.
  24. It wouldn't matter if everyone else stays healthy and effective. But that's what the front office is not willing to risk at the moment.
  25. It is fast and loose before those three are ready. I suspect we'll see movement on the borderline mlb relievers once those guys are deemed near ready to pitch in the bigs. And I think they are a long ways away from demoting Gibson. And Berrios is only coming up to start. They are a little limited until the bullpen arms are ready in the minors.
