  1. The CF market is pretty poor, if we pass on him I'm honestly not sure what else we would do. Rasmus isn't a good CF fit for us given how our park plays. I would imagine someone like Eades might do it. Or Gonsalves? I'd pay that price to have a borderline elite CF patrolling the park.
  2. Hicks and Schafer aren't half the defenders in CF that Bourjos is.
  3. I'll leave it at this: those taking issue with your post all were aware you were using a figure of speech. That's not the problem.
  4. "Dragged kicking and screaming" doesn't exactly fit your explanation of what you meant. Like, at all.
  5. You can have facts and still pull a conclusion from them that is highly dubious. Of course there is reason to be a skeptic about the Twins and their offseason aggressiveness, but that isn't the same as suggesting that the guy who negotiates and signs contracts did so unwillingly last year. In fact, it's not even remotely the same thing.
  6. I'm not sure we know if Pohlad was kicking and screaming, but I do know they happened. I hope the firing of Gardy indicated last offseason was the new norm.
  7. If the Twins made this move it would be exactly the kind of outside the box move that would make me excited about the future and next year in particular.
  8. I think we all know the realities, but I don't agree with the notion that these things are a true reflection of the "market". We are talking about a situation protected by anti-trust laws, with publicly financed infrastructure, and built-in competitive disadvantages. Ticket prices and contracts aren't a true market reflection because a true market doesn't really exist in baseball. If you want to see what the market wants for ticket prices - go check stub hub, not the teams site.
  9. Absolutely, it is readily apparent how far Kill has brought this program. The next step is the progression of the passing game.
  10. I'd take inconsistently effective at this point.
  11. And further shaped by leveraging taxpayers into paying their largest capital investments for them which leaves them more money to spend on players. Essentially it's double dipping at fan expense that leads to this.
  12. Totally agree, but that's the nature of a buy-low trade. Most of them fail, but trying them every now and then can reap some major benefits.
  13. I could quibble with some points but this is a really nice article!
  14. You could have said the same thing about Hughes prior to last year. What makes Hellickson have some upside is his minor league track record and pitching talent. It's just about finding a way to unlock that talent again.
  15. Interesting trade. I think this was good value for Arizona, would you have done something similar if you were the Twins? I feel like the equivalent would have been Kepler and Zach Jones or something in that neighborhood.
  16. Sure, as they reap profits off a stadium built for them with public money. It's not as simple as "what the market bears".
  17. Absolutely! It was more just a reflection in sadness on a player career and the many unfortunate stumbling blocks we've hit along the way to this hypothetical where even in an open market willing to spend insane amounts of money on players with all sorts of warts, our franchise guy is likely to take half what we're currently paying him. Such is life and that is no commentary on anything more.
  18. Absolutely and there would have been years Ryan would have looked very, very good in such an analysis. My thought was more that it's often so hard to parse out what the GM was actually responsible for (especially in evaluating drafts/signings/etc.) that this sort of thing narrows that down significantly.
  19. I wasn't revisiting it, it was the right move at the time. But in a thread about hypotheticals about Mauer's current value it is relevant to talk about how his value has played out compared to the deal we signed. It's a shame reasonable estimations of his value over the deal haven't even been met and that's sort of reflected in where we'd be at with this hypothetical. So no, your sarcastic remark is totally out of line.
  20. Contracts like this bug me a lot every time I consider buying a season ticket package or taking my family to a single game. This stuff is getting silly as hell.
  21. I'm pretty sure the "Detroit's farm system sucks, these guys are going to be bad soon" meme goes back to BYTO and they just acquired Price this year and made the playoffs again. Time to bury that one until Detroit actually takes a dive because this team has proven to be remarkably adept at maximizing it's trade pieces.
  22. The worst thing about the Mauer deal is that the Twins didn't even get the kind of production you expect at the front end to deal with the blow of the value in the back end of the contract. Ugh.
  23. That trade/WAR stat is interesting, especially since trading is one of the few things you can directly put on the GM.
  24. The Tigers farm has been down for years and they keep finding ways to add big pieces. They also gave up virtually nothing to add many of their stars and have found ways to flip mistakes into assets. That all said, this was a head scratcher.
  25. I'd like to see an outside hire just so the front office demonstrates less insularity. I have no problems with these hires, but I wish more often we would reach out when we have openings.
