  1. Ah, that makes more sense. See I look at the remnants of The Great Society still infesting our policies and see a cancer that needs to be gutted. Not because of what they stand for or try to accomplish, but for the horrific way in which they attempt to do so. From college loans, to welfare, to social security, and I could go on. There are few of those programs whose intent I disagree with, but they need fixing. Today's left/Dem party wants to double down on these failures rather than wholesale fix them. That's such a major sticking point for me.
  2. That's true, but I don't think the problem is their reign being interrupted by right-wingers. Liberals today just suck so bad at finding effective solutions. They just seem, as a group, utterly incapable of realizing there is more to solving a problem than shouting about there being a problem.
  3. I was really high on Arcia coming into this year, this is a bit of a gut punch. Even if Reusse is making it out to be more than it is....Molitor is anything but glowing in his comments.
  4. I think I agree Brock, the problem is that if the Dems have shifted that way in terms of their ideas/policies, they haven't carried over the more effective policy writing that is generally associated with moderate right-wing politics. That is my biggest concern with voting left, I've seen so few left-wing policies that were good, effective changes for our country. I agree with WHAT they want to change, but they are utterly incompetent at drafting policy HOW to achieve it. So I get torn in the ideals vs. results debate.
  5. Oh, I agree, but I'd still rather have him than Walker who, from my vantage point, is nothing more than a half-wit puppet put in place by big money.
  6. I'm less worried about the concussions and far more worried about the back issues that have seemed to come up the last few years. That could explain a lot of his issues. (Diminished bat speed)
  7. I'm not sure I'd put Rubio or Paul below Walker. Paul is out there in many respects, but in some respects it's a good out there - areas neither party are addressing well. (Like prison sentencing and drug laws)
  8. A look at Trevor Plouffe's injury profile gives me plenty of reasons to believe Escobar will get his playing time.
  9. I struggle for a term for myself because Libertarian has come to be known as this ridiculously over-the-top, get-rid-of-all government approach and I'm not for that. I like a limited government with strong regulatory powers and an effective safety net. One that also includes an education system as strong as it's military. The problem is that I want the safety net designed by people that want the least amount of government possible for the best results. Basically, I want government policy to have the core, heartfelt beliefs of liberalism but without the drunkenly stupid way in which they craft solutions.
  10. As a quasi-libertarian (so, in other words, a dude without a party representing him) I hope Cruz or someone like him gets the Republican nod and they lose in humiliating fashion. I'm convinced that may need to happen before the Republicans reach out to people like me and bring us in as the socially progressive, small government wing. It's just impossible to do that with gomers like this populating the party.
  11. This is really the only type of extension for Dozier I was on board for. The option years were likely going to come at a higher price overall, so we got the moderately discounted arb. years and he got certainty. A fair deal for both.

  13. Yeah, I wasn't saying it was more or less of a correlation than any other stat, but it seemed as though that particular analysis worked out conveniently to illustrate the point being made moreso than if you had picked out a different set of teams. Largely because those two teams fell almost perfectly in line with the 68 wins + WAR formula, which I understand is not generally going to be the case. Even if one were to acknowledge that WAR correlates better than most any stat (with defense) it still seems like that argument was a bit ham-handed in making a point that we've hashed out in every imaginable way thus far. So wasn't trying to relight that fire, just struck me as a bit of a convenient comparison.
  14. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if we did a similar analysis of WAR to team wins wouldn't we see a pretty low success rate of correlation? If so, why would I think this argument is strong?
  15. He's totally winning Iowa....right? Or do he and Santorum split the crazy a-hole vote?
  16. At this point we don't know that he can even hit AAA pitching, much less MLB. Please, show me how he is getting better.
  17. Look, whether the play the other day was a bad one or not isn't all that important. Hicks' resume includes a startling number of comically awful routes and misplays without one more in the pile. The guy is an average fielder, at best, from what I see and the numbers seem to back that up. The debate isn't Robinson vs. Hicks in terms of talent, I doubt anyone comes down on the Robinson side in that discussion. The problem is that many of us believe that Hicks is so wildly overmatched by big league pitching that the guy can't ever build confidence or work on improved mechanics without miserably failing. I want to choose Robinson to go north FOR Hicks and the idea that he can still bounce back from all these failures and get his production to match his abilities. Hicks has still yet to drive the ball with authority anywhere above AA. It's time to see if he can do it in AAA, let him build some confidence, and come back a long term solution. If Hicks fails again he's done and any future with the club is done. I'd rather give that one last opportunity the best chance possible. If they foolishly call him north with the team I'll be rooting for him, but I think it's a terrible decision. One made worse by having Shane Robinson as Plan B.
  18. Thanks for posting the RE24 stat, that's my first exposure to it. Very interesting.
  19. The craziness of not wanting to give up on Hicks. To want to give him a few months in AAA to prove readiness. I really worry Hicks coming north is a career death sentence.
  20. Hicks has had two lengthy chances which have resulted in historic awfulness. I'm no fan of Robinson, but it bothers me Hicks keeps getting gifted something he has repeatedly proven unready for. The real stupidity lies in the crummy options we chose to come to camp with, but I am beyond confused as yo what Hicks has done to entitle himself to so many chances.
  21. I agree, I was in the Trout camp for that very reason. It doesn't change, however, that WAR was being misused a bit in those debates. It sort of went unsaid until this year when Alex Gordon became the outlier that highlighted the problem and sparked some debate.
  22. Exactly, I feel like sometimes the guys over at Fangraphs get so excited about some stats or about an argument they are trying to make that they forget best practices with their own metrics. I've felt that way more and more about WAR ever since the Trout vs. Miggy debates. It's had an adverse impact on my own feelings about some metrics too, that's the worst part.
  23. Absolutely, its very existence is in opposition to what Fangraphs tells us UZR does well. It's like a bartender advising you not to drive drunk and then handing you a whiskey bottle with your keys.
  24. Dammit Virginia.
  25. I really hope this isn't for long. I'm amazed at what this kid has done in the minors only to hear griping from the club on how he isn't ready. While meanwhile we are about to go on year 3 of our CF circus. Just boggles my mind.
