  1. Except that was based on his cumulative big league play and the feeble contact he was making. The sample was nearly 500 at bats.
  2. It's been an encouraging 40 plate appearances, but can we not obnoxiously pat ourselves on the back until the sample is just a tad larger?
  3. Right cuz May in the bullpen has anything to do with that. There is way too much snide lecturing of people venting their concerns and frustrations. Having a winning record isn't a golden ticket of doing everything right.
  4. Pretty sure one can both be happy with the teams performance and quibble with some decisions. Thank god too....or we might as well shut TwinsDaily down until the next rebuild.
  5. I thought about this too but the home/road splits quickly scared me off.
  6. Just think how harsh people would be against Gibson at this same stage. You have to let young guys struggle early and not hold it against them. In his last 5-10 starts May has shown that same turned corner that Gibson showed last year. We should be hoping he follows the same path, not derailing it into the bullpen in the name of Mike freaking Pelfrey.
  7. Stretch this thing out (you may not even have to try to do this) and line him up for a September 1st return when the rosters expand.
  8. *You don't get to set aside the money you pay to repair only the roads you drive. Again, education is a fundamental societal need. *You are welcome to spend your own money on other school options. There is no monopoly. You just don't want those greedy poor districts getting your tax money. *The goal of education should be to give every student the ability to participate in our economy and society. Turning it over to the free market NECESSARILY undermines that. *The point you missed about colleges is not the gravy train of funds available, it's what happens when you turn colleges into for-profit institutions. (Which they all are no, even if they aren't in name) They are all competing for that gravy train, which is precisely what you want to turn all levels of education into. Maybe less gravy, but the same idea. *Yes, money alone won't solve the problem. But there has to be the proper funding before you can initiate changes. When you allow school choice you will destroy many local schools - forcing children to travel, schools to shutter, and many to limp along providing inadequate education.
  9. The spinning is a definite problem. He also takes very flat routes for some reason. Someone needs to sit down and explain what "as the crow flies" means.
  10. Then they obviously should have chosen Pelfrey.
  11. Nothing, they are two separate thoughts. Smith began increasing spending before Target Field revenues were even in play. He had a more aggressive spending approach in general. And none of that says Ryan or Johnson or the Twins are The Awful. Just acknowledging reality.
  12. That's the most confusing part - the Twins are doing some aggressive things we haven't seen in some time to help the lineup....but we are content to banish one of our best starters to some unclear role in the bullpen because...well, hell if I can come up with a reason. Those two approaches seem so at odds.
  13. I agree that Ryan worked under leaner years, but It's also fair to say that under Smith our spending was pushed higher on all fronts. It's a bit naive to think that wasn't purposeful. I also question this persistent need to defend a bad record on pitchers under Johnson. It could be largely bad luck or whatever, but it's pretty bleak during a time we were drafting highly. It just is and the constant "yeah buts!" really come off desperate. It doesn't mean we should contract the Twins, it's just been a disappointment. (I think that reality is why Ryan has opened up the FA checkbook for starters too.).
  14. Do you want to apply the free market to our military as well? Sell out the defense of our country to the most efficient and effective killing force? If your answer is the only sane one (hint: no), it's because the free market should not be applied to all things. Some things should not be subject to the motive of profit. The very nature of the free market is to induce failure. In education the real effect of inducing failure is destroying the education of some children. 2) So what, you want parents voting on things? What is it you want? 3) Not all people are able to move their child to another district. The poorest and most rural especially. School choice only works when you have enough money and options to make it work. The real solution is to stop tying district funds to local property taxes and evenly distribute funds to all students per child. Money is not sent to poorer schools in "far greater quantities". I'm not sure where you get that preposterous idea, but poor neighborhoods get poor funding. You are allowed to know what's best for your child, but the system you propose only helps those children with a choice in the first place. And profit? Profit is not "always a bad option", but the free market in charge of schools means (by the damn definition of free markets) will necessarily fail children and leave many of them without an education. That is a preposterously bad idea. We don't subject the military to the free market because when profit is the prime motivator - all allegiances, but to profit, are out the window. You want to know what free market education looks like in America? Look at college universities. Tell me that's what you want, because that's what you're going to get. A severe dumbing down of rigor in order to keep people thinking they are successful. Spending money on glitz and glamour rather than substance. Soaking people for money to keep that process going. That's what education looks like when the goal is to keep mouths at the trough. Education becomes the lowest possible priority.
  15. I haven't seen a replay, but from behind home plate today I thought he had a bad route on the Cespedes double. Edit: Yes, definitely a bad route. But I'm not sure he catches it with a good one either.
  16. I gave up on the guy (for damn good reason) but he's looking more more confident and capable at the plate. He actually looks like a major league hitter since he came back up. I really hope that continues.
  17. Man is that a perfect video for that, forgot all about that line.
  18. The dejected look of their players walking off the field was pretty enjoyable to watch.
  19. You can't help but feel that could be a really pivotal game for the rest of this season. Especially if they follow it up the next two days. Unbelievable.
  20. You don't have to answer OLTF, but I'm curious - if it was codified that during a rape trial any discussion of the victim's actions or character were outlawed as arguments - would that help in your mind? (I guess that's an open question to anyone too) I'm just curious about ways to protect victims and prosecute the scum bags that do this without re-writing our justice system.
  21. I think you're confusing performance with ability. Rogers isn't considered a high end prospect, he's generally seen as filler or future bullpen material - that is something most teams have in supply.
  22. The law mandates the schools to enact those rules and enforce them. Which leads to this problem: Especially given that universities have a vested interest in their public profile to appear to be following through. It's an incredibly stacked deck against anyone accused. This quote is money too: Except...we're not in a legal situation. You gave the power and responsibility to a university tribunal, not a court of law. Unless that is the plan down the line. At which point we are fundamentally undermining one of the core beliefs of our justice system and our civilization.
  23. Well said.
  24. Again - expulsion and a label of rapist. The condemnation is infinitely more damaging than the punishment.
