  1. A guy like Kepler changes that, just because the ETA on arrival is so much sooner. That would be a great move, but I'm not sure that's what we'd get. I think your comp earlier of a A/AA player with high upside is more likely.
  2. I agree, the proposed step of reducing the hard line of doctor confidentiality is a scary one. But I'm also not sure how to work around confidentiality and still notify those around the individual of the risks. That's one of many sticky wickets in fixing this problem.
  3. C'mon. The point of the article is to suggest that sometimes guys like Gomez might be drawing the ire of white American players because of his culture's approach to playing baseball. And the best defense that it appears to be to these people (Norris, clearly, and I doubt he's the only one) is that "This is 'Merica. If you don't like it you can get out". The people that matter aren't white joe schmo or dominican joe schmo in the mob, it's the principle actors in the situation. This study indicates (and has an actual player verifying) that many of these incidents are cultural in nature. Not a "please refill the copier" but a "That's not how we do things in 'Merica"
  4. But that's the problem, people justify them because they think throwing at a guy for stealing up 3-1 is somehow akin to "don't use all the paper in the copier without replacing it". It's utterly preposterous. I believe Homer and his Tiger Rock is the best response to this reasoning:
  5. An interesting read: https://www.yahoo.com/politics/guns-congress-and-murphys-law-090049362.html
  6. Yeah, I really don't get it. This show has enough issues without eliminating show stealing performances.
  7. He's no PJ Walters, but he's alright.
  8. Not ideal, but it may allow some willingness to move current prospects. It's hard to predict what a Plouffe trade would look like, but it's fairly easy to see why moving him now would be ideal.
  9. You may make those steps easier if you make some good moves this winter. Putting it all on the plate of the young guys is a good way to stunt that progress.
  10. Way to flip those bats on the homeruns 'Stros. Be yourself and have fun.
  11. These are not behavioral norms and the responses are certainly not analogous to behavioral norms in other settings. I really don't understand how anyone can make that comparison straight-faced.
  12. Not trading Plouffe this offseason could be a serious mistake. I hope they let it be known that he's available and consider any return that can make the team better in the long run. Plouffe's clock is ticking here any way you shake it.
  13. The decision, if they stick with it, on Gotham this week could be a huge mistake. That kid had sold me as the Joker, without that element this could go back to Season 1 Gotham in a hurry.
  14. 10/200 for Jason Heyward? Good god no, he's the poster child for how WAR can overinflate value. He just hasn't been good enough or consistent enough at the plate to deserve that. Let some other team make that mistake.
  15. Not all-in, just aggressive. Show the team that the front office believes in them.
  16. Given we are talking about Terry Ryan...I'll take it in any form we can get it.
  17. Jake Arrieta has sure come a long way from being comped to PJ Walters at the time he was traded to the Cubs. I really, really wish we'd be more active in targeting guys like him. (Failed former top prospects)
  18. The window seems right and the time to show we're serious is this offseason. We need at least one, if not several, aggressive moves this offseason.
  19. Right, as long as Putin is in charge, his involvement should always be seen as problematic at best.
  20. Butch Huskey Juan Castro Tony Bautista
  21. No one is decrying behavioral norms, that's partly why these rules are so flippin' ridiculous. They go WAY past that point under the guise of being behavioral norms. If the Yankees want to require clean shaven players - fine. If managers want to enforce in their clubhouse the way their team plays the game - fine. But to throw baseballs at people to meet an extremely vague and inconsistent notion of "appropriate play" is just asinine. It empowers the jerks to enforce their own notions of appropriate play on others. It leads butt-hurt jerks down 3-1 in the 7th to throw at guys for stealing. It empowers color commentators to criticize hitters for wanting to raise their batting average. (The dastardly fiends!) The litany of examples is out there and often stranger than fiction. If you want gentlemanly play it should be encouraged by managers or owners in their own clubhouse. Not by jerks with 90 mph fastballs.
  22. Hockey needs to take the last step and do away with fighting, but they have taken significant steps to eliminate player policing and unwritten rules that were causing injuries and brutal behavior. And they allow on ice goal celebrations, which I think is awesome for the game. (And the kids I teach love it!)
  23. Oh, I think you are very much downplaying those sorts of inner-clubhouse conflicts. See Puig as an example. Either way, your spin just doesn't jive with Norris' comments. Nor have I ever worked or existed in a work environment where it was an acceptable norm to respond to pride or exuberance with violence. If my coworker rubs my face in their accomplishment and I hurl a stapler at them so they show respect, am I lauded for my efforts? Sorry, but I couldn't imagine a more preposterous defense of baseballs unwritten rules than comparing it to everyday norms. And we aren't even talking about the least defensible things like throwing at guys for stealing bases up by 2. (And yes...that happened)
  24. I think this speaks to my point about proliferation. We try to find all sorts of things to hide behind, but the real issue is the massive amount of guns already owned in this country. And I'm really not sure how we reduce that number. (It's been tried but with little positive results) We can try and stem the influx, that can be a good thing, but the benefits won't be seen for a long, long time.
  25. Is this part of why you cling to the unwritten rules? Some notion that they are the basis for a competitive spirit? I've found that with others and I think it is a severely mistaken notion.
