  1. From whatever scrutiny people keep trying to protect them from by claiming they were asked first.
  2. And to Bert, Paul Molitor, and a host of other people it makes their argument ridiculous. And yes, the only non-ridiculous answer to that question is "So what?" Getting in a huff about it is pathetic. Their job is to not get out. Your job is to get them out. That's baseball. Asking them to make their own job harder for your benefit (while you, simultaneously, are still trying to make their job hard by shifting!) is absurd. It's preposterous.
  3. Sure, they can express it. But then posters online shouldn't be rushing to give them cover for saying it because a reporter asked them first. That absolves them of nothing.
  4. You're right, it probably will be more difficult, but I think you nailed it earlier that teams just don't work on it. I would also wager that changes quickly with how extreme and frequent shifts are becoming.
  5. Three different Twins, under no threat of torture I am yet aware, willfully expressed their displeasure with this. There should be zero displeasure. Even if you do work yourself into an unwarranted lather about it, you have zero reason to voice that lather. Three Twins decided to do so anyway. Whether they were asked or not is irrelevant IMO. They still have the ability to act like adults in their responses. Their team chose to shift to maximize the chances of getting Sisco out. Sisco bunted to maximize his chances of not getting out. Sounds like everyone played fair. That is the only acceptable answer to any question on the matter.
  6. With the 4 outfielder trend, this will only increase the margin for error for bunters as well. If I'm an analytics guy in a FO, I make working on bunting for my lefties a necessity. 66% success on bunts in play would make for a helluva way to win a batting title.
  7. Why even swing? Why not just stand there and let Berrios pound you with three strikes so we can all go home? I admit, I'm applying logic to something that is mired in absurdity.....
  8. It's all about adjusting to the adjustments in sports. Bunting will become a more more common thing methinks.
  9. I think that's harsh at the end. Dozier might be a very good leader, but he should consider leading another way too: knowing when to let something go and play baseball. So much of the old school mentality is (to borrow a phrase I don't like, but seems as apt as any) so Snowflakian. Grow up cupcake. He bunted. Next time don't shift and next time tell the reporter that asks you that you have "no comment"
  10. I think we're seeing a new generation of players that is willing to embrace the simplicity and fun of the game. I hope it pays off for baseball like I think it will. The outcry against Dozier's remarks are a good sign of that IMO.
  11. I think it's simple - if you're at the plate your number one goal is to not make an out. If bunting against a shift helps you do that, regardless of the context of the game, then you should do it. It's on the pitcher and the defense to get you out. Not for you to rollover and give in to them. It's not incumbent upon your opponent to make you feel good about yourself. Their job is to win by getting you out and avoiding outs. Your job is the same. Let the chips fall where they may after that.
  12. Glad they moved on. They should've scoffed at the bait in the first place.
  13. Baseball players often feel like they have chastise young players (or, most frequently (but not in this case), non-American players) for playing "the wrong way". I don't believe this is Dozier's first foray into that sort of thing. It won't be the last either and it won't ever stop being confusing and subjective.
  14. Getting beat by 25, at home, with playoff seeding on the line is almost as embarrassing as the Memphis loss. I know Butler is great, but this stretch of the season without him should've been the time KAT or Wiggins elevated their game and instead we see this. Ugh.
  15. Media maybe, not much a Molitor thing so far as I can see. Rosario, Berrios, and Dozier have all commented publicly about not liking it. I was happy to see Bert immediately step in to squash the complaint-fest Bremer was ramping up. It's rare to see Bert on the well-reasoned side of an unwritten rules issue.
  16. If the game is "too close to over" for a bunt, it's too close to over for a shift. If you shift, you get what you asked for. Twins are spoiling an amazing effort with whining.
  17. I'm sure that will go swimmingly. Maybe it'll work out, but if I were in Vegas I would bet heavily the other way. And I wish the league would take more meaningful steps in the meantime for the long-term health of the game.
  18. It's vague on ejections. And because of that, will likely lead to a whole lot of problems with enforcement. Ex-officials are saying enforcement will be nearly impossible. And will it shock anyone when it's called predominantly on defensive players? To be frank, I don't know why you'd have any confidence that a rule change like this will be enforced effectively or consistently in the NFL given the track record.
  19. While that's all fine and good, this is essentially the NFL's version of the "targeting" rule. I don't think anyone in their right mind would call that rule effective, useful, or game-changing. It's been pretty much a disaster in enforcement.
  20. I've never seen Gibson's stuff look that lively. It manifested some walks, but I'll take something like this every night from him, he was filthy. Also...Max Kepler is going to be a star.
  21. You should've been thinking that in the 1st.
  22. I don't see how it can be consistently enforced. If the NFL really wants to make headway (no pun intended) on this issue they should spend a bunch of money on reaching out to coaches at the youth level. Show them how to make the Rugby/Hawk tackle their emphasis. No more "head in front" technique, teach them to take the head out of the tackle. Put millions of dollars into re-educating that and putting the word out to ADs at every level of football. That is how you change this problem. And, as a bonus, you'll teach a better and more effective tackling technique in addition to being safer.
  23. In my opinion, Punisher is the one to try. I think you will find JJ2 largely boring or maddening.
  24. I thought the second half of Daredevil Season 2 (when Punisher left the forefront) became pretty dreadful. The first half of Luke Cage was pretty great too, but it also became dreadful. And we shouldn't even speak of Defenders, good lord what a mess. I don't think it's coincidence that the best parts of the Netflix run featured Fisk, Killgrave, Cottonmouth, and Punisher. You know....villains worth loving.
  25. Also....Jessica Jones Season 2.....not so hot. The Marvel Netflix run has had one decent showing since Daredevil/Jessica Jones started so strong. (Punisher)
