  1. Buxton's injury issues are often blamed on his mentality. He might just be brittle.
  2. Perhaps the distinction is less about the party though? I don't think LaBombo is wrong to try and isolate the fact that someone like Trump or any other Republican probably isn't the one to point fingers at right now. In fact, I think Trump is as much a symptom of the real problem as this individual. IMO, the issue lies with the significant way we have turned from disagreement to reviling our political opponents. And while I blame the Republicans more for creating that trend, there is no doubt it's thick right now. I wouldn't blame the Republicans for this individual, but I might place more blame on them for a slightly different conversation (but I think important distinction) that has enflamed this trend.
  3. Sounds like Chriss and Knight as the salary dumps can happen as of Halloween if htat offer is for real. Man...that'd be sweet.
  4. You might both be right. They're being too cute....but it just doesn't matter if no one is hitting. The reason baseball playoffs are a crapshoot is because over a small sample size (playoff round) it's easy to have things go south for a short time. And that's all it takes to lose.
  5. If this is true and we didn't immediately say yes....I give up.
  6. It might also say something about how profoundly awful Democrat messaging has turned in these areas. Not entirely their fault, but some fault for sure. A third party is a dream I hope comes true some day.
  7. I eagerly await his every decision to be hated by 50% of hte fan base, supported by the other 50% of the fan base with no rational basis. It's a sweet gig.
  8. I guess I'm with Mike....how far is your head in the sand if you voted Republican and you're surprised by the outcome? The problem I see, is that politicians in general (Dems too) tend to vote along party lines. Which means most regional concerns are left for pork spending rather than meaningful legislation.
  9. Could you clarify what you mean by this?
  10. It'd be nice if we had more concrete evidence of this to be sure. I do think the EC was intended for this, it was also intended to balance the tyranny of straight population votes.
  11. Personally I don't find the man qualified for much of anything. I did some reading about the Framers and the EC and it swayed me more to your view. Though the independent voting EC is very different than our current understanding. Perhaps that is another place to consider revision.
  12. Do you think Trump is severe enough for that? I'm not sure I'd agree he is, no matter what I personally think.
  13. That's a different issue. A valid one to be sure though.
  14. Sure, but that's not happening. Unless you mean the way the wealthy have more power, but that seems like a separate issue from this topic. Our republic is designed to prevent all forms of tyranny. It's worked fairly well too. Even now.
  15. I don't want to get into how likely it is, but just consider all of hte other factors that can also change by 2040. Will today's 50 year old be the same 70 year old voter we see right now? How would the states breakdown in such a super-urban environment? There is simply too much variability to put the kind of stock into that projection that you are. And frankly - I don't think 30% would ever have that power. Ever. I don't think there is a reasonable scenario where that happens. If it did....we probably aren't even America any more and the point is rendered moot. So...I guess...no? In general I don't feel particularly tied to answers I have to give to questions I find really implausible.
  16. I'm also in favor of this change. It keeps the purpose of the EC intact (Read: not strictly population driven) but allows for better representation of certain state populations.
  17. That's the issue here, the 30% argument is far too ham-handed to be taken as a plausible scenario. It's neither true now, nor is it certain for the future. The tiny states you listed are just as much an affront as Wyoming and Montana. But that's the purpose of hte Senate - to represent states as a whole and not be population dictated. That is their exact purpose in existence. There is no doubt that there is slight power advantage given to rural over urban. But there are valid reasons for that - if the large population centers are given full reign over everyone, it will create disparities so stark and unfair that it can jeopardize the health of the republic. Right now, where there are major urban centers, this already happens. In Illinois with Chicago and NY come quickly to mind. Voters on that outside of those cities have very different needs, needs that are often utterly ignored in favor of the urban needs. Now, do I want rural needs to trump them? Of course not, but the risk is high that if they aren't at least given some extra weight....they may be ignored (or exploited) entirely. And that's a not a healthy recipe. I can't envision a rational scenario in which large urban centers ever get ignored or exploited in the way that the reverse could happen. There is simply too much inherent political power contained in those places that rural america cannot match.
  18. Mike - you declared a projection a fact. Will you cut the melodramatics please? It is impossible to have a rational discussion with that kind of framework. My rainforest/white extinction remark was just exasperation with dealing with your repeated insistence on framing the conversation in absurdities and talking about it as fact. So you're right, we can't hvae that discussion. I prefer to stay further away from absurdity and closer to fact.
  19. Bets about 2040? Yeesh Mike. Studies about human behavior that far away are predicated on variables that are highly volatile. We've heard this from rain forests to the extinction of white people. It's silly to get too far into the weeds. I like that our republic is setup to deny majority tyranny in all forms. Even in a super urban America, I don't think 30% will ever decide anything.
  20. That is not a fact. That is someone's projection. It's a hypothetical.
  21. We won't agree because what you're stating isn't a fact.
  22. Escobar was a .550 OPS player who never even sniffed a .750 OPS in the minors. When the trade was made we (myself included) mocked the trade for crappy value and considered Escobar nothing more than the same kind of 40 man filler Ryan was a pro at acquiring. Escobar wasn't even good enough to be a lotto ticket. He was more like a faded McDonald's Monopoly tab. But when you manage your assets well....sometimes you get lucky. If Ryan had done that more often maybe we wouldn't have had such a barren system. Thankfully, at least the new guys are doing the right thing. (You know...like Milwaukee!) Now we wait and see if they have the right touch for how they did it.
  23. Doom and gloom about 20 years from now doesn't do much for me as an argument. It's far too much projecting. The Constitution was always intended to mitigate the impact of any one faction/majority from overriding the interests of the entire population. It's intended to push leaders to reach out to all walks of life in building their voting bloc. I find that to be a wise and valuable part of our republic. So it's just false to claim things would be much different today, the principles at root in these institutions were there by design. So I again point you back to not complaining about the structure, the problem rests with other issues.
  24. I'm sorry...but the EC (and other elements of our republic) were designed specifically to stop strict majority rule. So....I don't think this is true at all.
