  1. Is this argument for real? Dude made 13 appearances in March/April with a 1.93 ERA. Yeah, I'm going to look past a couple rough patches and say that, by and large, he's been pretty good for us. Especially given how high leverage the situations were he was being used in. He's struggling hard right now, but that's also a problem we've seen from him. He seems to be a bit streaky. Hence why he shouldn't be considered one of our top relievers.
  2. It absolutely is. So just like parenting, you should ask questions first before reacting. I would agree that many other privilege issues are far behind the public consciousness of racial privilege. I get where your first comment was coming from now. Would you say, given how hard it is to tackle white privilege, that we can tackle all of them simultaneously? I guess I question, unfortunately, that we can tackle any of them at this stage.
  3. We get regularly examples of your first sentence around here so that made me chuckle. I'm not convinced the scorned Bernie lovers cost the Dems, though. I don't think dense groups of Bernie lovers in Michigan, Penn, Ohio, and Wisconsin were enough to make up that difference. 2016 was lost because a two decade campaign of anti-Clinton had left so much bitterness in key swing states that Trump could swoop in and lie his way into people's votes. The Dems will certainly nominate someone with far less baggage personally than Clinton. But I am still concerned how the word "socialism" plays out. Eventually it has to be truly tested in a presidential election, I guess I'd just prefer we kick that can down the road four years with an incumbent.
  4. To your first paragraph - I'm all about checking that behavior as well. Trolling and negativity online is now something that is a regular part of our technology instruction. My students had two separate lessons this year on appropriate conduct online. I don't think that issue has been raised in this thread because it's slightly off topic. What you raise is another branch of the toxicity of social media and one certainly worth caring about. It's not just about being wrong. Certainly it's a problem if we try and destroy people on social media and we're wrong. There is no going back and the damage is real. It's also about how the approach is more counter-productive than helpful. It's sledgehammer vs. chisel. Sure...you can use both, but which tool you use should be informed by the problem right? Take someone who is just genuinely confused about privilege: they have never had to confront it, they don't understand it, and they go on social media and pose a well-intentioned question. Does that person deserve the same treatment as some Tiki-torch wielding prick making Nazi salutes? I hope not. I would like to implore people to think these two situations require VERY different approaches. You can take a stand and try and help one person, the other probably needs to see a jail cell. Or some other serious consequence. And, much like you, I'm a parent. Nuance like this is crucial to good parenting and, really, changing thing socially has a lot of parallels. As a parent you have to "take a stand" many times a day. I would bet your stand doesn't look the same every time but is instead very thoughtful, nuanced, and tailored to the situation you're addressing. Why would we do anything less for dealing with subjects this dense and important?
  5. I think you misunderstand. I'm not sure how this post comes out of what you're replying to. I'm not disagreeing with your sentiment and concern, I just don't understand how you took the quoted post and came with that response. It seems unrelated, maybe it's not, I just can't connect the points. There are certainly many forms of privilege beyond just race. All of which are best left to discussions miles away from Twitter IMO.
  6. I blame the left for social media. I blame the right for weaponizing cable and radio to create a toxic environment. Both poles are doing the same thing, it's about the tool being used. It worries me that the right has started to employ this tool as well. Social media is powerful and anonymous and can be employed to great and devastating effect. Berating someone about racism over twitter accomplishes almost nothing but for cases that require a sledgehammer. So yeah, Twitter blast the Charlottesville trash. But someone who doesn't understand their white privilege? Maybe reconsider your tool.
  7. I've only called out one of these for some inaccuracies and I think I laid out my disagreements on that front. As a way to show you that I read those other criticisms and simply nodded at them respectfully (and didn't respond to them), was the all female moment. I know a lot of people popped for it, I did not. For me it wasn't the particular thing you pointed out (though, that's fair too), my issue was.....why the hell does Captain Marvel need help? We literally just saw her fly through a spaceship. She doesn't need help. That ruined the moment for me.
  8. You lose some from time to time. Hildy has been pretty damn good all year. That said, I'm not sure I like Baldelli's decision to bring him in, that should be May there. Or Parker. Or whomever your best reliever is.
  9. I'm sorry Ben, but I don't see how you made this leap. Twitter is a vile cesspool, the trolls making those comments are one of many kinds of bad you'll find on that stupid platform.
  10. That and Republican factions fall into line. The left has always had more trouble quelling their small uprisings. Trump gets elected - Evangelicals fall in line. Hillary gets elected - some liberals sit in the corner and pout. It's a character strength that principles matter so much, but it's an election weakness of the highest order.
  11. I'm not mad, I just don't like that you were inaccurate in your criticisms. It's one thing to say "I don't like the diminished fantasy elements in GOT" it's another thing to say you didn't like the way the unicorns died at winterfell.
  12. They should be trying now. Maybe now that analytics have taken a more prominent role the idea of trading earlier in the season will seem less taboo? Stroman - get it done.
  13. Perhaps if there were less apologists for it, even here, there would be less desire for that. Also, that's a false dilemma argument. The idea that our choices are to do nothing or act like a bunch of imbeciles is not only false, it perpetuates the problem. The idea that dealing with racism is either sledgehammer or silence misses a vast array of other avenues that may be more appropriate to given situations. This misunderstanding about how to handle the very title of this thread is a major obstacle to progress, in fact. Less false dilemmas on this would be nice, so it'd be welcome for you to recognize that flaw in your thinking.
  14. Should his golden statue be 100 or 200 feet tall?
  15. The order to shoot came from one of the Black Order taking the command from Thanos and relaying it. It's not like they stopped shooting to rush the battlefield, it wasn't part of the plan until it had to be. And, again, why that's the case is because Thanos has a certain degree of arrogance having conquered "thousands" of planets. He enjoys the combat, why would he rob himself of it? It's clear you didn't like it. That's fine, but those elements fit with the way the battle was depicted and the characters in it. Nothing you are arguing is necessary or, at times, accurate to the battle itself. As someone who liked it, I'm not going to agree with what I find to be unfounded or misrepresented criticisms. Battle didn't do it for you. Cool. It did for me, we can leave it at that.
  16. That's fine, I'm just pointing out that at least some of your complaints weren't accurate to the battle's depiction.
  17. I guarantee you if a group of black folks thought their religion allowed them to take federal property at gunpoint...Trump ain't pardoning ANYONE in that circle of involvement.(Blessings or not)
  18. Here in this thread? No. Would we find that same restraint on social media you think?
  19. I agreed with you that it needs to be pointed out. It's not like my analogy said "Ignore the texting while driving" person. My analogy was about our response. What "pointing it out" entails is sorta the point at which we could diverge.
  20. Of course and since I think LaBombo and I have pretty similar takes on this maybe I can answer. Getting in a car accident because you texted on your phone is a problem. So is getting in a car accident because you had a blood alcohol level of .30 while you drove a monster truck the wrong direction on a one way in a school zone. Both are "problems" - I'd like to suggest we may deal with those two problems in different ways. One is a common problem (like, say, white privilege) that can go unnoticed. They other is (admittedly hyperbolic) so egregious it's unquestionably wrong. If twitter and the left are any indication (in general), that is not a shared belief. It's kind of my beef in general with the total abandonment of nuance by the poles. One pole does it on radio and Fox News, the other blasts it over social media. So on that photo my alarm bells are off that it's a problem. That's as far as I can go without knowing more about the nature of the problem. I hope others show similar restraint. I like to think we can at least hold that line to our fellow person, if even for a few days.
  21. I just watched the clip online again to make sure I wasn't misremembering. Cap says "Assemble", everyone roars, and both sides charge. They basically walked through portals and into a fight.
  22. Out of curiosity, has there been any reporting about the context of that photo? It's totally appropriate to say that photo was foolish and in bad taste, especially from an educator, but is there more information on the context? Some searching hasn't yielded anything for me.
  23. His troops were on the ground before the other side showed up. Thanos showed up in force and the good guy reinforcement showed up on the battlefield second via basically teleportation. I think you may be misremembering the sequence of events. Plus, part of Thanos' character is the conquerer/the cleanser. He's demonstrated time and again that he likes the actual battle and there is an ego about his methods.
