  1. I was behind the signing at the time, but man this story torpedoes my optimism simply because of the injury angle.
  2. Man I'm so behind this. Vargas has quickly become a favorite of mine, i hope he maintains his trajectory the last year or so.
  3. True, but it would then wrap the team more in the mess than they currently are.
  4. And players a route to accuse the team trainers of sabotage.
  5. It's my same beef with the "look at all the great depth" argument. These guys are only good depth and ready for opportunities if the friggin team bothers to call them up. Man I hope this is the low point for this team.
  6. Pfft, competent 25 man rosters are for suckers. Smart teams only use like 10 of those spots for good players.
  7. I project that much like our feelings about Hunter at the initial time of his signing mirrored those of the Garnett trade....our feelings a month or so later might also be parallel.
  8. I've always wondered what tree that apple fell from. Total reversal in skill sets, pretty amazing.
  9. I'm going to go out on a big limb here and guess Gwynn's dWar was not kind to him....
  10. You're making this awfully personal when my initial rebuttal had nothing to do with you or your argument. You interjected yourself into a reply to another poster, so don't project my reply to him to you. That's a bit ridiculous. I didn't feel tobi's argument was great as stated, even though I agreed with his thesis. Perfect context isn't necessary, but comparing one guy's 23-31 seasons to another's 23-39 seems a bit unfair. I wouldn't want anyone to do that against Mauer either, so fairness in discussion should be important. Plenty of ways to poke holes in the case against Mauer without stacking the deck.
  11. No, I'm really not. I get the point. I agree with Tobi's thesis. Go look at the above section I quoted and then re-read what my beef is. Tobi cleaned up that argument much more and it still reinforces the point he was making and I agree with. It's just not as dramatic. Even when you assume Mauer's last few years in the league dragging down his career slash line it'll still be in line with those HOF players.
  12. I figured it would be pretty close, it just helps the argument to be accurate.
  13. I'm just pointing out some context is important. You can't say his slashline is better and it be a total career (including decline) versus one that is only in their prime. Mauer's position is absolutely important and I think he gets way too much flack. None of that makes the argument of Carews career slash vs. Mauer's a good one. It's still flawed with all those caveats admitted.
  14. I don't necessarily disagree that people are too harsh on Mauer, but you don't think this is kind of an unfair argument? You're including Carew's career when his skills were in decline and right now Mauer's career is all of his prime. You might have a better argument to compare where Carew was at 31 years old to Mauer at 31. They look roughly the same, but I don't have the time to do the math. It's certainly clear that Carew's play his last 5 seasons (age 35-39) brought his numbers down as you'd expect most players of that age to show. So it might be wise to compare apples to apples a bit more.
  15. I think people are putting too much on the concussion and not enough on the lower back pain we heard about. To me, one of those issues is far more likely to have caused the problems we saw last year and that issue (lower back pain) is likely a problem we'll see more of, not less. That worries me greatly, I wish the concussion was the extent of his issues, that'd make me feel a lot better about him.
  16. That's not true. He hasn't really pitched enough to even warrant that much credit.
  17. I hope Rosario does do that - the sooner the better. Hicks too, but Hicks has had 500 ABs to displace a guy like Robinson. It's his total failure that's the problem, not the Twins decision on what to do with him.
  18. I hope it went something like this: MP: I'm pissed TR: How much money did you make the last two years and how many innings did you pitch again? MP: I'll behave. TR: Damn right.
  19. A look at Trevor Plouffe's injury profile gives me plenty of reasons to believe Escobar will get his playing time.
  20. This is really the only type of extension for Dozier I was on board for. The option years were likely going to come at a higher price overall, so we got the moderately discounted arb. years and he got certainty. A fair deal for both.
  21. At this point we don't know that he can even hit AAA pitching, much less MLB. Please, show me how he is getting better.
  22. Look, whether the play the other day was a bad one or not isn't all that important. Hicks' resume includes a startling number of comically awful routes and misplays without one more in the pile. The guy is an average fielder, at best, from what I see and the numbers seem to back that up. The debate isn't Robinson vs. Hicks in terms of talent, I doubt anyone comes down on the Robinson side in that discussion. The problem is that many of us believe that Hicks is so wildly overmatched by big league pitching that the guy can't ever build confidence or work on improved mechanics without miserably failing. I want to choose Robinson to go north FOR Hicks and the idea that he can still bounce back from all these failures and get his production to match his abilities. Hicks has still yet to drive the ball with authority anywhere above AA. It's time to see if he can do it in AAA, let him build some confidence, and come back a long term solution. If Hicks fails again he's done and any future with the club is done. I'd rather give that one last opportunity the best chance possible. If they foolishly call him north with the team I'll be rooting for him, but I think it's a terrible decision. One made worse by having Shane Robinson as Plan B.
  23. The craziness of not wanting to give up on Hicks. To want to give him a few months in AAA to prove readiness. I really worry Hicks coming north is a career death sentence.
