Perhaps you missed this. Shipley might not have the same ceiling but we're still talking about a high ceiling with less risk and he should be quicker to the majors. Of course Stewart could be on the Bundy/Fernandez timing. I still like Stewart but I could understand Shipley. Right now these are my #4 and #5 picks. Frazier is also a good choice but Shipley is close enough that the SP need trumps the fractional amount that I prefer Frazier as BPA. The part that I found interesting about Ball/Shipley is that BA has significant contacts and could have some inside info. Matt Garrioch knows his stuff but for the most part he doesn't have the contacts. So I'm curious if the Twins are not in on Shipley.
The problem is that many clubs will use Mauer's age and contract as a big negative and the Twins would be more likely to get a pair of top 100 prospects (not elite prospects) and a couple of lower level guys for him. I don't think a club is going to back up the prospect truck for Mauer and that's the only way that you trade him.
There is no reason to trade Mauer. The Twins have piles of money available to spend but not much to spend it on as it is. People can complain about the lack of spending in FA and I think they could have done better this year but there really aren't that many good deals signed by FA's. Payroll goes up and it goes down. It was peaking in 2010/2011 because the Twins had a lot of veteran players and TF simply allowed them to retain most of those guys. It's going down now because rebuilding teams get younger. And when you get younger you get cheaper. I cannot understand why this is difficult to understand. Now if boston was actually offering Bogaerts, Barnes and maybe even Bradley then I would be interested. yes that is a ridiculous package of talent but Mauer's contributions extend far beyond what he does on the baseball field.
Plouffe won't block Sano but as long as he is doing alright then there won't be an extreme need to rush Sano. One funny thing in this thread. Somebody thinks Deibinson Romero might replace Trevor Plouffe this summer. Romero plays terrible defense, has had an unspectacular MiLB career and he is only 3 months younger than Plouffe. It's one thing to be critical of Plouffe but it's another to just wildly flail at 'supposed' better alternatives.
I disagree. Arcia's problems aren't that he skipped AAA but rather that he just turned 22 and he only played a half season at AA. This is one of the concerns that I had about Arcia but his raw hitting skills are immense. I think he will be fine and be a fixture in the middle of the order in a year or two. Hicks I'm not as never was as sure about.
Yes, the Twins drafted Parmelee as an OF'er but that doesn't mean that they didn't force that position on him because there wasn't a spot at 1B available in the majors. His scouting reports in the low minors usually said that he was borderline awful in the OF but that the Twins were trying to make OF work so he had somewhere to play in the majors.
Perhaps you have missed what Buxton is doing right now and how he is getting consideration as the top overall prospect in the minors while in Low A. If Bryant is there at #4 then he should be the pick. 54 gms and 30 HR's - just ridiculous The Twins would potentially have 3 elite bats to pair with Mauer (declining but still elite) and Arcia (well above average potential).
My favorite comp (not Miggy) put up a similar line (if you look deeper) - 50 games, 12 HR's, .294/.390/.578/.968. The line isn't as good but Stanton had a normal BAPIP and played in one the worst hitting stadiums in the FSL. Ft Myers is actually an average hitting stadium compared to the rest of the FSL. The FSL is really skewed towards pitchers parks though so an average stadium is still a pitchers park and all of those road games are tough also. The reason to be really excited is that Stanton completely demolished AA the following year and was a midseason promotion.
One thing that people are forgetting is that the BPA based on the internet scouts might not be the BPA according to the Twins. I could see the Twins leaning towards Shipley instead of Stewart especially if there is a 1M difference in signing bonus that could be used later. Part of that 1M could be Stewart trying to go overslot. People are also forgetting that the Twins have an additional 750K available to them w/o a draft pick penalty (luxury tax penalty of 400-500K) attached to it.
The key to my success is the depth that I have. Very few teams have 4 plus starters on their bench plus extra starting pitchers. Yours is one of the few others and your team is also quite well. I don't know what has happened to Billy Buck but he's starting Ramiro Pena, Nix and Moustakas every day. I'm also riding the Sale/Harvey train.
Sano doesn't want to be the #2 prospect in the Twins system or in the entire MLB. May with another poor performance. 5IP, 6K, 5BB, 100 pitches, 59 strikes Vargas with #8.
It makes sense if the guy that they are taking is still #5 or #6 on their draft board but projects in the #7-10 range. I'm not sure if you're aware but the Twins can spend an extra 750ish K without losing a draft pick. Amounts of up to 5% over are only subject to a luxury tax. So the Twins could get their guy and still go overslot in the 2nd rd. However last year a couple of high picks IIRC took advantage of that extra 5% (of the entire bonus pool) and were able to negotiate overslot bonuses. If there is one guy in the draft (available at #4) with this leverage then it is Stewart. It's possible that the Twins could have the option to take Shipley for 500K underslot or Stewart for 500+K overslot. This could tilt things towards Shipley who seems like a very solid pitcher with some upside at #4.
It doesn't make sense at all nor is it really true. Aside from the 3 2012 draftees almost all of Houston's good prospects are starting at High A and could be in AA this year. Additionally it doesn't make sense to pass on superior talent unless there are substantial savings. Last year the Astros saved considerable money and got the guy that was probably #2 on their draft board. Stewart hasn't given any indication that he will be an easy sign and there's a significant drop from Appel/Gray to Stewart. The two college pitchers are very likely usable MLB starters at the very worst while Stewart might not even get out of AA.
All you need to do is ask where he fits on the QB depth chart. He's going to be carrying a clipboard for a year or two from what I understand. 4+M is a lot of money also. If he was talking about 1M then possibly but 4+M is a big pile of money.
Shipley is like a survivor on my draft list. Manaea has been dropping. Meadows (and Frazier to a lesser extent) have been dropping. Moran hasn't really impressed me. At this point Shipley is probably my #5 in this draft. closer to the top of my list - check position of need - check okay - check I hope that this saves at least 500K but there could also be an argument that Shipley is better than Stewart. The Twins could certainly think this way.
The problem is that underslot pick appears to be a HS catcher which looks to be in the next tier of talent. Considering the Twins pitching need I think Stewart is almost a lock to be picked but Shipley is growing on me.
I will happily take a top 50 prospect for my 20th keeper. It was such a difficult choice between Wood Arrieta, Bass and Magic Santana (traded). But it's just a part of my wheeling and dealing though. Barnes will probably be traded this offseason but Wood's value is probably tanking at some point. It seems that I understand fantasy baseball less every year. Or else it becomes less predictable. I honestly find it difficult to look at the teams in this league and project greatness from any of them. My team is good but it's not a top team for example. I also have no idea how Tim's team even has a winning record.
