So you have two complaints but don't take into account the other successes? Getting Berrios in supplemental round has been awesome. Hitting on a few lower round picks makes up for the two misses that you are focused on. I wouldn't rate their drafts as A+ but I think they are still in the very good range.

Nobody is going to have a 100% hit rate even in the top six. They missed with Stewart but pick Gonsalves in the 4th (and Garver/Granite later). It could have been better but I am not unhappy about that draft.

This would be a nice trade since I think he is a better prospect than the one traded away. He signed for 100K (max without affecting the signing cap). This shows us that they are selling on this season but I am not so sure that they will sell on next season. Maybe Kintzler is on the move. Maybe Escobar (versatile and a surplus position).- 67 replies

Article: 5 Reasons You Should Love The Jaime Garcia Trade
kab21 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Why would a team that trades for Gray trade him away this offseason? There is a good chance that he is traded this deadline. I think you vastly overstate significantly. The price now or later starts with Gordon and likely includes one of Gonsalves/Romero/Jorge. The reason to wait until the offseason is if you want to center the trade around Lewis since the Twins don't really have a 2nd best prospect that can headline a big trade like this until then. -

A) he might not be available B-) why not get an additional 2 months use out of him since the price will be in the same ballpark? -

I see Gray as building for next year but not waiting until the offseason. Same as Quintana (now traded). I guess you could say that is buying but not necessarily for this playoff push although it does help. -

Can anybody actually find someone that suggests they should make that kind of trade? That is my frustration with all of these 'counter arguments'. They aren't actually disagreeing with anyone. -

On pace for 35-40 HR's at 3B with a .900 OPS is getting there. Obviously it is a different thing to put up a 1.000+ OPS and 40+ HR's but we aren't that far off. Yes, no QO is possible. And let's put the kibosh on any sort of an extension. We acquired him for nearly nothing and I am happy about it but I expect his arm to fall off at some point. Getting stuck with 4M in dead money is one thing. I really hope the Twins are aiming higher this offseason. -

Teams that finish dead last in the MLB shouldn't be signing expensive FA's for the most part. Things have changed now with several players taking steps forward this season (Berrios, Sano as MVP level, Rosario/Kepler, Grossman, etc...). I certainly don't think that one offseason of a new GM can tell you a whole lot about what they will do in the future. This move for example has shown us that they will pick up a contract which was something that many had considered impossible just one week ago. Yes, people thought taking on 4M in salary was near impossible because it hadn't been done before. I think we will see a lot of 'impossible' during the next couple of seasons. Hopefully there are some W's also. -

I don't see why adding Garcia means anything different for the 2018 offseason. Why are they standing pat for the future in either scenario? We have had a revolving door all season at the 5th spot (and Gibson at the 4th spot). There have been ample opportunity to audition for a spot if the FO thought any of those guys are worthy. -

This isn't a big trade but it is a huge move considering Colon is in the rotation and Santiago faces a lot of uncertainty. If anybody is concerned that the Twins have TOO MANY starters then I don't even know what to say. -
There isn't any lean possible here. Romero should be getting shut down. Gonsalves has thrown 430 IP overall and 140 IP in each of the last two seasons. Romero has thrown 280 IP and his 100 IP has already exceeded his career high. Gonsalves has experience (AA last season) and (fewer) injury concerns. The 40 man roster doesn't concern me at all. A lot of dead weight that could be jettisoned. Several are nothing more than live bodies to toss in there for lack of a better option. I think you wait until the 2nd week of August to call up Gonsalves but they really have nothing (Colon...) in the 5th spot.
-
Yes, this isn't an aggressive sell the farm year but that doesn't mean that they should continue to run Colon or similarly awful pitchers out there every 5th day. And then there is Gibson every 4th day. Is he decent now? I don't know but I would feel a lot more comfortable with him in the 5th spot. Gonsalves or Jorge might be an option but Romero has to be getting shut down soon (or shifted to the bullpen. He isn't an option to pitch into September imo.
-
Let's call yours the optimistic take. His velocity dropped after he pitched in relief and it plummeted in his last start. I have a feeling that something major is wrong. He still exists but I am not counting on him for anything this season. If he comes back then it is a bonus. I certainly wouldn't stop exploring pitching trades because he 'might' come back.
-
We at least have an idea of what the Braves price was. I certainly wouldn't lose any sleep over trading a prospect that may not contribute in 2018 for a solid SP. The Twins don't have a healthy Santiago to compare against. They have Colon, Turley or ???? in the 5th spot. I think Garcia could get you 3 more wins than that crew.

Article: Twins Close To Acquiring LHP Jaime Garcia?
kab21 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I just want to know the name of the discussed prospect regardless if the trade happens. I have been told that there is no chance of acquiring a competent starter for a 15ish ranked org prospect. This seems to indicate that is possible but we really don't know if 'decent' is more like 10ish or in the 20's. And my frustration with the board as a whole continues with the complaints about 'Why is Gibson even here (much less Colon)?' and the reluctance to trade any level prospect (except the Navaretto (almost non-prospect) level) for a decent/compentent pitcher like Garcia. -

One question has already been answered even if this trade doesn't go through. The Twins will indeed pick up salary in a trade. Trading for a rental doesn't exactly go against what Falvey/Levine said earlier this month. They aren't emptying the farm system on this trade. That is the rental they were talking about. They are removing one of Colon/Gibson (it's Colon) from the rotation and that is an absolutely necessary step for any .500 or better team. And it is using lesser prospects (not top prospects). Obviously they will have to send someone with potential in the deal. Navaretto (or comically Turner) certainly aren't part of this deal. Navaretto has multiple years of <.600 OPS on his resume. That isn't decent in any definition. Lamonte Wade seems reasonable to me. Good prospect but lacks upside (corner OF with below average power) and is a position of depth. Perhaps Blankenhorn. Granite would be an interesting case. Good time to sell high imo since he isn't this good (AAA numbers) although this would be steep just for Garcia. Garver would be frustrating since all he has done is hit at every level. Rortvedt also seems reasonable. He has upside but he is years away and most likely never makes the majors. But at the end of the day I really hope this trade gets done for a top 15ish prospect since Garcia is a competent starter and replaces an ocean of diarrhea in at least one of the rotation spots. -
Article: A (Twins) Territory Divided
kab21 replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Did I only say that they would only get blasted by the media? They would lose the players themselves if they sold right now. This is the most important factor imo. How can you expect the players to perform when the FO guts a team 1/2 game out? And yes, trading Santana (1 of the 2 good starters - Mejia is making an argument for a 3rd) is gutting the team when they are pitching Gibson and Colon. -
Article: A (Twins) Territory Divided
kab21 replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Twins would be absolutely blasted by local media, national media, players (especially important) and by fans if they sold as some suggested. And they would deserve it. People keep talking about 'we should get prospects for next year' but these trades look nothing like last year's Yankees trades. They had premium players in free agent seasons that brought back a HAUL of prospects. The Twins have a few alright players (controlled for next year) that would bring back one top 50ish prospect and several borderline top 100 guys. There is no way I make those moves for a mediocre haul like that. It might be possible to trade someone like Escobar and make it very clear that it was done to add a pitcher that could help out this year or at the very least next season. Everyone can see that the Twins need a lot of help in the bullpen and the rotation. That could be defensible. But I actually think they should keep Escobar as a super utility guy. -
We have one thread where Gibson has been so awful for so long that he has to be removed from the rotation. Colon says 'Hold my BEER!' Both of these are terrible options but the Twins can't go forward with a 3 man rotation. I would say make a trade but the board has mostly been against trading any prospects since they aren't a competitive playoff team if they make it. Something has to give since the Twins have gotten complete garbage out of two rotation spots and are still in the playoff hunt.

Article: How Long Is Eddie Rosario's Leash?
kab21 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I see more Jacque Jones in Rosario personally. And he was a perfectly fine LF'er through his arb years. And Brooks is completely right. You don't replace Rosario until a clearly better option comes along. Granite is not it (discussed 2 weeks ago). And neither is anyone else in the upper minors. -
Or how about keeping Santana instead of hoping that you can replace him and actually improving the rotation? The target should be increasing the # of good starters instead of treading water. Money shouldn't be a problem since Mauer comes off the books the following season. We really don't know anything about how this front office will operate.
-
You are going to overpay if you are trading for it or if you are bidding on FA's. This board and you seem to be saying everything is an overpay which means that the Twins will be left to develop a starting rotation and play for 2020+. It would be great to have the perfect deal fall into the Twins laps but most likely that isn't going to happen and if they want to get serious about building a rotation then they will need to ante up even if it hurts.
