  1. Baxendale actually hit a batter after the Sano incident as well. No warnings issued. Still don't get where Manuel got that scouting report, or whether Baxendale totally changed his approach and found his stuff this off-season (I suspect that the report was pre-spring training 2013) because his stuff is nothing like described, other than the velocity of the fastball, which actually gets a bit higher as well (with the handhelds they are using in the side fields and not with Hammond Stadium radar.) Either a total transformation or bad scouting reports
  2. That one was either on Willingham who did not see Vavra stop singing Mauer at 3rd or at Vavra who pulled the aforementioned stop sign too late for Willingham to stop. Regardless, Gardy is not about to throw any of them under the bus. Agreed, that was more awful than what Plouffe did.
  3. Willingham's defense makes Plouffe look like a gold glover. If there are concerns voiced about Plouffe's defense, there should be about Willingham's as well. Plouffe is not the worst fielding player in this team. And if Gardenhire has issues with Plouffe's defense at third, remember who was he Twins' manager when they were trotting Brian Buscher there, in a competing team nevertheless, and whether Butcher was thrown under the bus by him as much as Plouffe has been.
  4. He is clearly injured. He needs to stop playing, take care of what ails him and come back.
  5. I suspect that he did not have particular players in mind when he said that 6 to 8 and it was probably a figure of speech. And does not really mean much (and might be more than 8 making it to the majors). The 2002 Quad Cities affiliate had 9 players and the 2003 Fort Myers and New Britain squads had 12 and the 2004 New Britain had 16. Just a number (and probably low if he wanted to say that this Cedar Rapids team is great)
  6. Ever is a long time Killebrew was signed in '54 and Allison in '55 (and I'd put those 2 ahead of Sano & Buxton at this point) Then Kaat came in '57, Versalles in '58 and Tovar in '59. I'd say the core of the young Senators who came to Minnesota was probably the best "prospect core" (but they did not call it that then) the Twins had. Supplemented it with Oliva in '61, added a couple of pitchers and '65 happened. I hope that today's prospects some day are as good as these guys, but we need a good 20 years to find out
  7. With the changes in the draft and the requirement for signing within a month, this is no issue. Plus lots of the newly signed high school players usually stay for instructs in the fall.
  8. I understand the positioning part being low in a list but the publicly throwing players under the bus (and select players only while others cannot do wrong) is totally inexcusable in any profession. Praise publicly and discuss problems privately. The guy needs to go.
  9. Dozier is doing much better and Florimon is better with the glove (and was better with the stick in the minors) than Hanson. Plus Hanson is a third baseman and would have to compete with Plouffe (and there is not comparison) Also of all the aforementioned, only Plouffe is older than Hanson (and that by six months.) He is a 26 year old with 4-5 games only at AAA and career MiLB OBP at .320. He does not deserve a call up. I'd rather see the Twins call up Sano, if they need a third baseman than Hanson... Nice guy and local and might get it together some time, but he still has not earned a call up.
  10. Blackburn and Wimmers have still to start baseball activities Perez has been activated and assigned to Rochester for rehab DeVries is about to start a rehab assignment with the Miracle Deduno is about a week behind DeVries Harden had a setback with his shoulder (described as "minor") and he is taking a few days off (day to day) Wood is with Rochester and pitching pretty well
  11. the 2006 team was slated by the "experts" of ESPN (the majority of their 30some panelists) to win it all right after the regular season. Not under-rated. Just under-delivered.
  12. Here are some fun numbers: FIP: Worley 4.59, Pelfrey 4.58, Hernandez 4.58 BABIP: Worley .396, Pelfrey .370, Hernandez .250 Small sample size in a much colder than usual April. The tide will turn. Hard to make conclusions after 5 games. The Twins did the same last season with Marquis and gave up too early and then he started putting numbers similar to the top two Twins' pitchers last season (4.04, 1.302 WHIP, 7.6 K/9, 2.82 K/BB ) Give it some time.
  13. the one thing I noticed about Mauer this season (even from 4/6-4/20) is that he has been taking some hacks out there of the type that Morneau and Willingham take resulting in some bad swinging strikes. Not sure whether he has been listening to the detractors and want to prove that he can hit home runs or something, but that's got to stop... I am really not worried about him. Everyone is entitled to a bad week of games (esp. if played every other day, like the Twins' were because of weather...) Sitting down when you are in a groove does not help.
  14. a quick note: Miracle's 21 wins lead all professional baseball not only the minors Re: Baxendale: That was probably an old scouting report from his college days. He has a plus two seamer that sits at 91-92 and peaks at 93-94 with very good movement and deceptive cutter-like action. His slider is his out pitch and at this point it is a borderline plus plus pitch; needs to work on the command. His change has a very late action and it is still improving. This is a pitch he did not have much of in college, making it even more impressive. Still throws the curve as a change of pace pitch, but at this point it is on the back of his arsenal. Few command issues (but that is nitpicking.) I see him at AA before the end of the year and maybe at AAA to start next season. He had the single most dominating pitching performance I've ever seen (at any level) late this spring and I described it here. Frankly, he was amazing and at that point, I knew that he had it together this season...
  15. If Pelfrey can take himself out of the game because he demonstrated suckage in the previous 2 innings, then he deserves the blame. It is not hindsight. He could not locate the ball, he was ineffective. A bad thing was about to happen and Gardy should had avoided it. Have Duensing and Swarzak warming up before the inning started and get him out after the first mishap. Before something bad happened. He got his 5 in to be the P or record for the W. About as much hindsight as seeing someone skating on a lake in April with a blowtorch and feeling that there might be a happy ending to that situation...
  16. Arcia is hitting .194/.242/.387. Other than the isoP, that is Buterrible. I know that he needs reps and that he will be better. This is not a comment about Arcia, but a comment about the KILLING part... Ramirez is hitting pretty well and has only one less PA than Carroll... 17. Context and using the right metric at the right time at the right place. Every metric is broken if you use it inappropriately. WAR is good in summarizing someone's performance during a season and comparing 2 players (position players vs position players; and to a lesser extend pitchers vs. pitchers) for things like post season awards WAR is awesome in summarizing someone's career and comparing him with his peers for things like HOF induction. For looking at weekly or monthly variations, esp in the beginning of a season WAR is not good. But it was never made to do that. Steamrollers are made to pave roads and they are great for it; if you try to mow your lawn with one, you will be disappointed....
  18. I think that the question should be "what to do with Ron Gardenhire..." Plouffe has the fourth best OPS+ in the team behind Willingham, Mauer and Escobar, yet the Manager of the Millennium sits him for 2 games. And we are talking about a guy who the Executive of the Millennium asked to be his Right Fielder last Spring Training, and that never materialized (thanks to the Manager of the Millennium who "mixed and matched" his way to 96+99) and yet he never said anything but played the game.
  19. Yeah, this is probably what is going on. Despite the fact that Plouffe has been about as good as everyone with the bat as far as starters go, other than Mauer and Willingham. His 97 OPS plus before today was 3rd on the team. (4th if you count Escobar.)
  20. ERA? how about quality starts and win-loss record? /sarcasm. The Twins led the AL in xFIP in 2010.
  21. +1 Didn't hurt them tonight either, but the concept is ridiculous to begin. Would love to see some video of Gardy "attacking the ball" as a Met in the early 80s, but 45 errors in 230 games would tell me that despite his attack, the ball won.
  22. 1.605 WHIP. Giver him a few weeks to get that down.
  23. Burris was rehabing his shoulder this ST. IIRC he did not toss from the mound at all during ST, that's why he stayed behind after the season started. I doubt that he will be starting or that he is stretched at this point. That bullpen starts to look really good and I assume a couple guys will be moving up to Fort Myers in a couple months with Gruver first in the line...
