  1. The only thing that Ryan has proven is to lead teams to worse records that his predecessors, twice. The MacPhail Twins had better record than the Ryan I Twins and the Smith (speaking about hate) Twins had better record than the Ryan II Twins. And this is an undisputed fact. Add the other fact of zero american league pennants and zero world series rings in way too many years of being a GM, and you got the whole of Ryan's tenure: awfulness to mediocrity to awfulness. One can spin the truth any way he/she wants, but it does not change it. And if some wish to strive for and celebrate mediocrity, it is fine. Some of us want excellence. And Ryan has proven to not be capable of that.
  2. Agreed with a couple of exceptions: Subtract Brad Steil (he has already in a year started undoing the mess that Rantz has done in 50) Add Deron Johnson and Vern Followell & Vavry & Scotty & Co
  3. -Fire the whole front office (or President, GM and assistant GMs and let the rest apply for their jobs). -Bring Andy MacPhail back as the Twins President and CEO (read Cafardo's Sunday column) and let him have a run of the team -Let him Hire a new GM -Let him set a new front office that reflects this millennium -Let him Hire a new manager -Let them Hire new coaches - Make 2014 a rebuilding year and trade the likes of Willingham, Correia, Doumit at al. - Try to grab a piece or two (like Josh Johnson or Phil Hughes) in free agency - Get rid of the AAAA players - Play the kids in the majors and AAA in 2014 and do not sign retreads - Be transparent about it, and let the fans know what is happening and that there is a plan. Something like this... (kinda what Epstein did in Boston some years ago...)
  4. Not the correct math: Math is zero world series and zero AL pennants and: 6 division championships in 12 years for Gardy and 4 division championships in 16 years for Ryan. Also 4 5th place and 5 4th place for Ryan and 2 5th place and 1 4th place for Gardenhire If you like mediocrity, you got to love those guys. And according that logic, 2 division championships in 4 years makes Smith better than both. At least twice better than Ryan, correct?
  5. Even that would have not turned that team into a winner. This team is rotten to the core and the changes need to start on the top with the Front Office the manager and coaches, before we start talking about players. Unless you fix that, you might see mediocre teams that go 3 and out in the post-season, but not winners.
  6. Re-sign Blackburn and let's have 2011 all over again. (Interestingly enough, Duensing pitched the most innings in 2011 of any starter not named Pavano). I think that at this point, even the most loyal supporters & apologists of Ryan and Gardenhire & Co, should think that they are the ones who should be the "Plan B" option...
  7. Preaching to the choir about FIP (and xFIP), btw. I do agree that their seasons were similar. Pelfrey did have a higher (5.9 vs 5 K/9) and higher BABIP (.337 vs .314), which go on his side (in addition to HR/9, which I think is not much meaningful). Can we settle on SIERA, which is probably my favorite (complicated) pitching metric (ref on previous link if anyone cares) even if a rate metric and value is cumulative?. Correia's is 4.57, Pelfrey's 4.63. Practically identical. This whole point, remember, started from the statement that "Correia was the third most valuable FA SP other than Liriano and Sanchez", which I disputed. Here is the list of the 2013 pitching performances, ranked by SIERA (in reverse order, need to click to short by lower). FA SP SIERA in (just counting down to Correia & Pelfrey) : Sanchez: 3.17 Kazmir: 3.52 Liriano: 3.56 Haren: 3.60 Greinke: 3.74 E. Santana: 3.76 Blanton: 3.92 E. Jackson: 3.98 Feldman: 4.06 Maholm: 4.16 Colon: 4.24 Lohse: 4.25 Dempster: 4.26 Saunders: 4.49 Bedard: 4.54 Correia: 4.57 Pelfry: 4.63 And probably missed a few... So hardly third most valuable by any means. Really.
  8. I hear this, but I just don't get it. Tim Lincecum Matt Garza Dan Haren Ricky Nolasco Josh Johnson Ervin Santana and possibly (they have options) : James Shields Ubaldo Jimenez Jon Lester Plus the oldies, but all of these guys are relatively young. You can build two very good rotations with those guys, unlike last season. I think that the Twins should target 29 year old Minnesotan Josh Jonshon and either 27 year old Phil Hughes or 29 year old Tim Lincicum, add 32 year old Dan Haren for a 2+1 year contract and call it a day Add Meyer and Gibson or Correia and Worley until they are ready, and you got a real rotation, but it will cost them about $20M plus what they will save from Morneau and Blackburn If they sign 35 and 36 year olds with 4 K/9 that will not happen.
  9. Then you have to fight Baseball Prospectus as well The way B-R calculates WAR is broken, especially for pitchers; Fangraphs and BP are much better data sources .
  10. I think that Ryan should not assume that he himself will be returning next season, despite what Pohlad said. Three seasons ago this time, BS "had the total confidence" of the Pohlads... We shall see.
  11. Correia has been a fine fifth starter type of guy this season. The problems are that a. (depending on how you are counting) he has been the second best starter for the Twins this season and b. he is paid much more than a fifth starter. A couple of comments: Career low FIP for Liriano was in 2008 with 5.89. His 2012 FIP was 4.54 and his career average FIP is 3.62. Correia's career average FIP is 4.51, which is very close to that of Liriano in 2012. Also it took him 3 season in the majors to get a FIP under 5. So unless the above statement describes the unfortunate perceptions of the people who are ru(i)ning the Twins, it is grossly unfair to Liriano. Totally disagree with this statement and as a matter of fact, the data shows that Correia has provided less value (unless you look at ERA and W-L) than another FA SP the Twins have signed: Pelfrey: 3.99 FIP, 2.1 WAR, Fangraphs "Value": $10.6M Correia: 4.46 FIP, 1.1 WAR, Fangraphs "Value": $5.5M Not sure where you got that statement, about Correia being the second most valuable FA SP in baseball after Liriano, but it is wrong... He is the second most valuable FA SP the Twins signed
  12. Mauer 5.2 WAR Dozier 2.8 WAR not.even.close. Dozier wins the most improved player, that's about it.
  13. Sure it does. Mauer is taller and he is accustomed to digging balls out of the dirt. Sano isn't. First base is not a dumping ground, you actually need some skills to play and it is one of the most important defensive positions in the game because of the frequent contact... And Sano is a fine third baseman. Matter of fact better on the field than most of the Twins' starting third basemen the last few years (including Koskie at similar stages of their careers. Coskie was a butcher in the minors...)
  14. Bartolo Colon will be an overweight 41 year old juiced pitcher. As far as he is concerned, I am with Terry Ryan: I'd pass.
  15. Wally Backman, always have been a big fan and this season had a tremendous turnaround of the Mets' AAA team as a manager. And Twins' ties Torey Lovullo, current Red Sox' bench coach, many years as a AAA manager and one of the up and coming but blocked managers: Charlie Montoyo many years as the Rays' minor league manager with tremendous success in his teams, but as long as Maddon is around, his future in that organization would be in the minors.
  16. Hopefully the boot. He is not liked by his players, the New Britain fans and the New Britain local club management. How he is still with the organization (and gets a trip to the AFL) is beyond my comprehension...
  17. That should actually be a plus... it is in my book This team needs a manager with emotions, who stands behind his players and can actually bring some energy in the dugout. To the OP: Seriously, the only negatives on Gardenhire are the last 3 seasons? In some cases, his inability to win in the post-season was worse that his last 3 season... If you are going to use the age card on Glynn, it should be used on Molitor as well. They are the same age. I was always wondering whether Molitor's drug use has anything to do with him not being a manager, but this also the organization that hired a PED cheat as a hitting coach the past off-season... Scottie & Steinie should be added to the list (I know, I know....) if the Twins will go internally. Really disappointed to not see external names, because this is what the Twins need (starting from the GM, of course.) I suspect that this is an internal only list.
  18. Seven games It is not like it is July... Let's see Pinto play.
  19. ERA? On the other hand you are talking about Ryan, so all is possible... Zito is retiring. Look at all Free Agent SPs under the age of 32. Calculate their average K/9 the last 3 seasons. List in decreasing K/9. Pick the top 3. These are the ones that the Twins should sign... Hint: a pitcher who was born in Minneapolis is near the top of the list...
  20. Over time for Ryan to go.
  21. They had 3 HRs that scored 5 runs. They won by a margin of 8. He either does not understand the concept of piranhas or he is just fried (or both.)
  22. Twins' RHP Dallas Gallant (lately of CR Kernels) was suspended 50 days because of PED (amphetamine) use. Report here. 24. Single A. Not too great performance and then this, I doubt he is a Twin much longer...
  23. Wishing you a fast recovery. Congrats for your early promotion to New Britain this season too!
  24. The problem with Diamond was that that Twins really inflated his 2012 performance (but of course they were looking at ERA and W-L) . 4.7 K/9 do not an "Ace" as the Twins called him make. He is a serviceable maybe back of the rotation pitcher if he hits his sports. He did in 2012, did not in 2011 and 2013. Major difference of the 2013 Diamond from 2012 Diamond has been BB/9. Add his horrible forced mechanics (check out how he stands with his back leg still up the air for seconds after each pitch watching where the ball is going, instead of having a nice fluid delivery and be in position to field the ball as soon as it is released) and he is trully a work in progress, which might not pay, since the natural talent is just not there. At this point, I'd rather have Duensing, at least his fastball is 5 mph faster...
  25. That's about right for the position players. Only difference is that I would have given 1B to Kennys Vargas. Very similar numbers with DJ Hicks (bit more power, bit less BA, OBP within 10-15 points), only Vargas got them all in Ft. Myers and is a year younger than Hicks.
