  1. So far this offseason has been the definition of insanity. The Twins have just been re-signing the same people who went 3 and out (again) in the postseason and apparently are expecting different results... They need to start making some trades
  2. Jose Berrios's 3 full MLB seasons: 2017: 3.89 ERA, 3.84 FIP, 1.229 WHIP, 8.6 K/9, 2.9 K/BB 2018: 3.84 ERA, 3.90 FIP, 1.144 WHIP, 9.5 K/9, 3.3 K/BB 2019: 3.68 ERA, 3.85 FIP, 1.233 WHIP, 8.8 K/9, 3.8 K/BB Maybe improvement but maybe regression. If improvement, with that rate, it will take him 10 years to realize his potential. Potential is different that results in the ballpark. Maybe it is his training regiment and he needs to focus on recuperating and or pitching, instead of dragging tractor tires around. Could be between his ears. I don't know what it is, but he is not progressing at the rate a top pitcher should be progressing...
  3. Fact: Berrios, Dobnak, Odorizzi all lost games last postseason against the Yankees who now added Cole. The Twins need much better if they want to be relevant and not go belly up again in the postseason
  4. Always great to see another impact arm get signed; Avila's career numbers are 2.25 ERA and 3.44 FIP. He can be a force out of the bullpen...
  5. He did not fail a PED test. He was dinked for the same substance that Vargas was dinked in the minors a few years ago: A diuretic. Meds that makes people pee to lose weight (hint hint) or to reduce their blood pressure. Steroid users are using them to induce frequent urination that would result to excretion of testable steroid metabolites from their system. That's why it is banned. Nothing like E. Santana taking Stanozolol (synthetic Testosterone...)
  6. If he plays until he is 55. Check out Larry Walker's numbers, including his 7 gold gloves. He is not a Hall of Famer... Buxton could not really get close to that realistically. Andruw Jones is closer to his peak value ceiling, but Jones already had 6 seasons of 153+ MLB games by Buxton's age. Peak ceiling and HOF are totally different conversations. If career peak was the basis for a HOF induction, Doc Gooden would have already been there.
  7. The Reds are trying to build a contender and there might be 1-2 pieces away from doing so. I would love to have Castillo, but I don't think that it is happening. Gray might be okay, but the Twins need an ace, and he is a number 3. Ray is a number 4 in a World Series team.
  8. Why would that hurt? None of the three was a factor in the postseason when the Twins went belly up (again). Syndergaard would have helped them more than any of them did...
  9. Travis Shaw as a first baseman (he is gold glove material at the position) is probably the way to go there. He was jerked around by the Brewers and with a BABIP about 65 points below his career average he is about to bounce out. And will not cost that much. Sano may be a good first baseman some day. However, teams that aspire to compete deeply in the post-season do not have people learn how to play a position in the majors, especially the single position that touches the ball more, after the catcher...
  10. The Twins need to focus on trades before their prospects expire. Both Gonsalves and Stewart were top 100 prospects (Stewart peaked at #28 in 2015). Now they are nowhere. The previous regime was horrible with doing that. I suspect that in 2015, they could have gotten something better for Stewart than they have received now. Their window of contention is getting smaller; they better do something now before it is too late and the next top prospects also expire...
  11. It was pretty much expected with the sale of the Miracle last January and the recent organizational changes in the operational side and pretty much the operational merger with the Jacksonville Hockey team this ownership franchise also owns. Not sure that I care about the name or the logos and fonts, but cannot go wrong with Purple and Gold
  12. Zander Wiel should probably be on that list as well.
  13. This is not fantasy baseball, where you can switch Sano to first base and not worry about the lack of his experience in the position. A team with aspirations to compete deeply into the postseason will need a good fielding first baseman, esp. since the rest of the infield is young.
  14. Bit on interesting trivia: The Twins' pen lead the majors in 2019 in FIP-. Who would have thunk it? Once they got rid of Hildenberger, Parker, Magill & Co, things started to gel. They need one lefty badly, other than that they are pretty much set.
  15. It seems that the Los Angeles Angels, San Diego Padres, Chicago White Sox, and the Twins are all having discussions with Wheeler at this point. Sounds like the Sux are pushing hard after they signed Grandal. Allegedly the Twins offered Darvish 5/$100M or so when he signed with the Cubs for 6/$130. I think that Wheeler will command something similar, but I just don't see many teams going for even 5 years. The first 4/$90M offer should probably have him sign
  16. The comparison breaks when you look at pitch values: Gerrit Cole's best pitches in 2017 were his fastball and change, and he had below average slider and curve (both of the latter were improved considerably while with the Astro's) However Gray;s fastball and change are below average and his slider and curve are above. So exactly the opposite of Cole. If your fastball is below league average and you have to throw the slider to get outs, your future looks more like Sergio Romo than Gerrit Cole... Cannot be a top starter without an above average to plus fastball...
  17. if your best is a number 3 in a post-season competitive team, you are better of trading him for someone who would be a number 1... This team needs 2 starters better than Berrios to compete in the post-season, and Odorizzi can slide at number 3 without much drop from Berrios
  18. This sucks. Prayers and condolences for his family and friends.
  19. Buxton will be the only MLB position player with some value I would trade, because there is an MLB-ready replacement (Kepler) and his value on paper is larger than on the field, since he has a hard time staying on it. If I were to get a better pitcher, like Syndergaard or Buehler, I would not mind trading Berrios who has not really improved much the last 3 seasons. If not, he stays. No hitting prospect should be untouchable. I'd keep Graterol and Duran because they are the only 2 with number 1 or 2 upside and trade anyone else in the organization with Kirilloff the first off the line. If Buxton is traded, I'd keep Lewis and give him a CF glove. That's about it. Short window, nobody should be untouchable, but you cannot open holes by trying to close others.
  20. Steamer projects a 97 wRC+ for Rooker and 95 wRC+ for Kirilloff. That would replace Rosario's 103 and Cron's 101, which will likey made the 2020 Twins worse, if you add the facts that Boyd (93 FIP-) will be replacing Pineda (87 FIP-), and Romo and Castro were in the 2019 team that went belly up (again) in the postseason, Cole or no Cole. They got to trade prospects, like Kirilloff, not veterans who are coming from underperforming, yet better than average seasons and are solid cogs in a team...
  21. The oft unmentioned team benefit of a QO, is that if a player accepts it, he has huge motivation to have a great season before he hits the free agent market for good. The Twins still need a couple of arms ahead of Berrios and Odorizzi to be competitive in the postseason.
  22. I think that Duran's next 6 years (his control time with the Twins) will better than Berrios's next 6. Same way that in the 2016 offseason it could be predicted that Berrios's (who was then a minor leaguer) next 6 years with the Twins would be better than eg. Gibson's (who was then a major leaguer). Duran has higher ceiling than Berrios, IMHO. Simple
  23. I would not move Duran for 2 years of Jeff Grey. I think that Duran might compete for a spot on the Twins' rotation some time next season and will likely be better than Berrios his next 6 seasons of control. The Twins need to use their excess of OF prospects for a trade. If anyone would take Buxton for a pitcher like Grey, I'd do that again. Wheeler and Gray can slot nicely and numbers 1 and 2 on the Twins' rotation. Cron was on the top 5 of the league on xwOBA-wOBA so he is due for a rebound with the bat, esp. if the wrist is healed, and his defense at 1B is above average. It is not broke...
  24. 2019 Twins SP FIP- Dobnak -63 (Odorizzi) -73 Thorpe -75 Graterol -75 Berrios -84 (Pineda) -87 (Gibson) -93 The other guys were better albeit in slightly different roles or frequencies... I'd rather see two of the young pitchers (or a find) at numbers 4 and 5 and save the $ they would have given Gibson, to sign/acquire a number 1 and number 2 that they need more than Gibson.
  25. Mookie Betts and David Price might cost just Buxton and a prospect if the Twins are to take all that $, but should the Twins do it? Price's contract is a bit too rich ($32 per for the next 3 seasons until his age 36 season) and might prohibit extensions that they should make (Sano, Rogers, May etc.) Betts is a very expensive rental. Paying close to $70 million for just these 2 makes no sense for the Twins. They might be able to get both Cole and Strasburg for that money...
