  1. What they will do: Santana Hughes Gibson Nolasco Milone What they should do: Meyer May Gibson Berrios Duffey/Rogers (I like Hughes as their closer)
  2. From the current group of Twins' starters the two I would trade are Santana and Milone, in that order. Based on the recent FA signings, Hughes and Santana are tradeable. Nolasco maybe...
  3. ERA does not tell the whole story. Here are career numbers of 4 Twins' SPs: Milone: ERA 3.92, FIP 4.30, xFIP 4.22, SIERA 4.23, K% 16.9 Liriano: ERA 3.97, FIP 3.55, xFIP 3.51, SIERA 3.64, K% 24.3 Bonser: ERA 5.18, FIP 4.55, xFIP 4.24, SIERA 4.15, K% 18.2 Diamond: ERA 4.43, FIP 4.46, xFIP 4.33, SIERA 4.57, K% 10.9 I'd argue that Milone is much closer to Bonser and Diamond (even though better than the latter) than Liriano. Who would give Bonser (or Diamond) a 3/$21 contact? Also: The 5th spot of the rotation is perfect for minimum wage players. Ideally, if the Twins have any sense, that would be a spot rotating among the hottest AAA SPs. Get them up, let them pitch until they cool off, get them down. Rinse. Repeat. Keep the other 4 starters on a 5 day schedule (do not give them extra days of rest) and the 5th spot will pitch in about 20 games or so... Much better way to spend that $ in a team with apparent holes.
  4. If you asked Glen about this, I am pretty sure that he will say that it was all the Catchers' fault. And Perkins and Milone are 2 totally different pitchers. Nobody can accuse Perkins of being a junk throwing lefty, which is what Milone is. What made Perkins a decent late inning reliever is abandoning the curve and change and becoming a 2 pitch pitcher (FB, SL.) Last season the Slider did not slide that much, which was a problem.
  5. That's the total issue here. The Twins have been hoarding back of the rotation starters. They have about 8 of them. The problem is that they maybe have one or two top of the rotation starters, and those guys are in the minors...
  6. And results Malone got: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EUucGyY0jvo/TpUAlh8M_HI/AAAAAAAAMsU/iYK1wvvO7JE/s1600/Karl+Malone4.jpg
  7. And is that a bad thing? Why? How many World Series have the Twins won since 1994 when Ryan and Co started being in charge?
  8. This is what scares me about Milone: Milone's worst pitch is his fastball Milones only above average pitch is his change up which he throws about 25% of the time and is just 6 mph slower than his FB. Add the fact that the past 2 seasons he pitched <130 and <120 innings, and I tend to think that there is no book on him yet. And when that happens, we will be watching batting practice... Sell High.
  9. Boshers has a 1.95 ERA, and 1.00 WHIP, 39 K and 11 BB in 37 IP (26 games) in Venezuela this winter...
  10. Sure. Let's hoard a whole bunch of back of the rotation guys and keep them until they have no value, instead of trying to find a couple front of the rotation pitchers. Quantity always wins over quality. The more the merrier...
  11. Here is the problem: Liriano's past 3 seasons: 35-25, 3.26 ERA, 3.23 FIP, 1.241 WHIP, 9.6 K/9 and 3.8 K/BB Give me a starter who pitched better for the Twins the last 3 seasons. Or, give me any starter not named Santana who put 3 better seasons in a row for the Twins the last 15 years. Ryan did not get that it was not Liriano who needed to go, but it was Gardy and Andy. Finally someone pulled that plug but a few seasons too late. it is not the 2 months of Liriano, it is that he did not replace him.
  12. Not Gibson. If Ryan had any sense right now, he should be out trading Santana. His 3/$40M contract might look good to some teams. Milone might actually have some value as well...
  13. Very True. If it were not for them the Twins wouldn't have won more than one post-season series and multiple World Championships...
  14. One number is worth mentioned: 666. Joe Mauer's PAs in 2015 for a career high. Another thing worth mentioning: Mauer has digressed as a hitter the last couple seasons. The Twins had the 13th best OPS out of 15 AL teams. I think that Brunansky is getting a free pass here, and may be part of the problem. Mauer under Bruno is swinging too much... I expect about .300/.350/.450 as is, and maybe .025 points on each higher with a better hitting coach.
  15. I really do not get the obsession with Stuart Turner, esp. when Murphy (who had a .688 OPS in the majors last season at the same age that Turner had a .628 OPS in AA) is under control until 2020 or so. I can see Garver over Murphy as the starter because of his stick, but Turner at this point is a worse prospect than Drew Butera was at the same age. Barring trades the rest are close, but I would have Polanco over Gordon as the SS starter (doubt that Gordon will be close to MLB-ready in 2 season). Also I don't see Walker as a corner OF starter in a contending team, unless he gets his OBP close to .320 or so. Kepler at CF is about as good as Parmelee at CF, so that should not even be option D. I see Rosario as a great 4th OF (again that OBP issue) and from the current high minors crop. I don't get the lack of love for Arcia here as well... I'd have an Arcia/Buxton/Kepler OF with Rosario as the 4th guy. I'd probably have Palka ahead of Walker (that OBP) as well... So (barring trades, and I think that they should trade Dozier by then) C - Murphy 1B/DH - Mauer DH/1B Park/Vargas 2B Dozier 3B Sano SS Polanco RF Arcia CF Buxton LF Kepler OF Rosario
  16. Is that wishful thinking or is it what the Twins would do? My wishful thinking (with the players they have) : Meyer Berrios Gibson May Santana what the Twins will do: Santana Hughes Gibson Nolasco Milone
  17. Unless you are one of these: http://i1.wp.com/h2opositivo.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/the-bookworm-beat-112015-the-illustrated-edition-and-open-thread19.jpg?resize=480%2C443
  18. Didn't see the Tweet or the Quesada bit. I was looking at transaction pages
  19. The Twins released RHPs Stephen Pryor (AAA), Greg Peavey (AA), and Ethan Mildren (A+) and CF Jason Kanzler (A+) today
  20. Well you know that cat, May. a. Would he have a spot in the Mets' postseason rotation? b. Would he have a spot in the Royals' postseason pen? a. no way b. likely so, you know how to skin that cat
  21. Still a bit to tell about, since there are a good 2 months of work to figure out the 25, but here is my take: a. As far as bats go, here is the 2015 OPS+ by position: C 76 1B 86 2B 111 3B 96 SS 110 LF 100 CF 78 RF 77 DH 99 PH 15 Got to figure out the Sano/Plouffe thing but, as is: CF, DH, will likely get lower in 2016; C might be the same, 1B, 3B, RF, and the bench better increase. b. cannot talk about pitching at this point. Too many things in flux c. This is important: Cannot look at teams in a vacuum. Part of the reason that the 2015 Twins were that good was because the 2015 White Sox, Tigers and Indians under-performed. Got to factor their improvement over their 2015 versions to how the Twins will potentially end up in 2016
  22. Got to love that stuff they write Unless they are talking about stuff he puts on his face, we are talking about a guy who lost most of a season by punching a door. Lohse's makeup should be off the charts then...
  23. Let me take that O'Day Milone comparison a tad further: LHB hit .261/.316/.415 off Milone and RHB .193/.261/.279 off O'Day. Milone has a career 16.9% K% and 16.8% in 2015. O'Day has a career 24.2 % K% and 31.9% in 2015 The Twins can get as much from any of the 3 MiLB FAs they signed or from O'Rourke than they can get from Milone for at least $5 million less.
  24. Not all innings are created equal. Good teams want their best pitchers in high leverage situations. And in good teams, those will likely be in the pen. For example in the 2015 Royals, Wade Davis faced more opponents in High Leverage situations (107) than Danny Daffy (102), or Jeremy Guthrie (99). Also a good reliever can influence the outcome of twice as many games than a starter...
