  1. I suspect that most Twins' fans care more about the Twins and their players than whether or not communities like Rochester (who sell Yankees' and Orioles' merchandise in their gift shops) win or not. And as far as having affiliates, one of these days we will see pretty much everyone following the Braves' and Cards' model. This way the natives would learn to support the parent team as well. As far as the prospects themselves go, the magic number is 3200. The daily minimum salary in the majors. Ask Palka or Walker whether they would mind making that for a couple extra days or whether they think they deserve it more than Schafer. Someone like Palka who is not on the 40-man roster likely does not make that in a month. $ is a pretty big reward, and teams have to reward their best players with it, when they have the opportunity. It would had been a great gesture from Antony's part to do it. He just blew it.
  2. The article is here (and it is free to read.) Really good stories about living conditions, using players of the Augusta GreenJackets (Class A South Atlantic League, Giants' affiliate) as case studies. Worth the read...
  3. Hey, Delmon is a free agent last time I checked
  4. But the hope is that the new Twins' management will trade some veterans for at least a few this off-season...
  5. Just to play devil's advocate: Who would you rather have for the next 3 seasons (with the same $) : Ervin Santana or Jeremy Hellickson (who is 4 years younger, free agent this off-season, and on the upswing - and from Des Moines) ?
  6. TK, TO, and RC really are involved very little these days because of health issues and really do not do much. TK does the most and he is involved with teaching fundamentals. I don't think that you mess with them. On the other hand, rehiring the fired former manager who could not find a job with any other team in the league, is a symptom of what is wrong with the Twins. He has to go (again.) Here is a thought: Imagine if the Twins fired Molitor and got Gardenhire as his replacement. Back to the future...
  7. They do not need to do it right now. They will let the new person make the decisions about who stays and who goes. That would be unfair to everyone involved. Plus the minor league teams are in pennant chases. Do you take Mientkiewicz out of the Lookouts championship hopes to fill in for a fired Monitor? Uncool..
  8. There was something missing: "in a post-season team". If you look at his rankings among qualified pitchers WAR: 33/84 FIP: 34/84 ERA: 33/84 He ranks right where a 3 in a winning team should rank. League average teams and non-competing teams are not going to be after Santana now, so league average is a bit irrelevant about his possibilities of getting traded. Is overall an above average pitcher? For sure. But winning teams have above averages 3s and 4s...
  9. I laughed at that headline: Ace? If Antony views him as that, nothing is going to happen. Santana is a decent number 3 or 4, on the declining part of his career, with a chronic UCL issue and a drug suspension behind him. AKA: a ticking time bomb. A smart GM will get rid of him as soon as possible. Desperation makes trades, and the opportunity is higher now than the off-season, when teams can actually do some planning.
  10. Um. No. He is in his last legs. For real. Nothing solid about Chooch these days. Only 48 games in Philly because of injuries.
  11. Clearly they have issues in the front office with a. signing Albers and b. promoting him over others... Not only development here.
  12. Ok. Had my timing off. Mea Culpa. Thanks Still why not promote the guy 10 days before and keep Albers in Rochester? This is Antony being totally tone deaf and not getting that Albers is the poster boy of the 99+96+96+92 era to a whole bunch of us. What's next? Claiming Diamond off waivers from the Jays?
  13. The Twins know what Albers is and it should not be fine with them. They do not need a guy who is not part of their future blocking the development of players who (hopefully) are part of their future. I'd put Duffey at the pen where he belongs and keep Berrios. If they need another starter DFA O'Rourke and brink up Gonsalves or Wheeler. They got to see what Wheeler has before he leaves as a MiLB FA this coming off-season. Inane. Another proof that Antony needs to follow his former boss outtahere
  14. Terry Ryan traded for the wrong catcher...
  15. I could not agree more, other than adding, package Buxton in a trade to increase the return.
  16. I think that Duffey would make a very good late inning reliever. And last games was probably the last evidence the Twins need to make the move. His FB dropped 3-4 mph in the 3rd inning and his command went all over the place. He was a reliever whom they tried to make a strarter. Let's call that experiment a failure and try to get some use out of someone with a lot of potential before you exhaust that potential by continuing failed experiments. As far as promoting prospects go, there is no reason that they should not promote Gonsalves at this point, unless there is concern about inning thrown, that this season will be the most of his career. Also, they got to see what they have on Wheeler, because he will be a minor league free agent next season. I think they have seen enough of Dean.
  17. Hope he helps them with International Trades. They do need help there...
  18. I did not say that he should not be paid what he is paid or that the Twins should have not extended him or that I personally have any issues with his contract. As a matter of fact, I am on the record multiple times defending that contract and saying that the Twins could absolutely not do differently because the town that almost erupted when Kirby was talking to Boston as a free agent for certain erupt if Mauer left. They could not do otherwise. All I am saying is that if you look where Mauer's performance ranks to where his compensation ranks (and feel free to normalize for the league which is actually a better comparison; eg. Mauer's contract in 2016 was about 78% of the league's top annual contract -Kershaw's-vs. Carew's in 1978 being 18% of the league's top contact - Ryan's- I think that this is a good compromise.) you'd find out that he is overpaid for what he is producing. Not that the Twins could have done otherwise. Ryan was between a rock and a hard place, and likely that's part of the reason he retired and let Smith deal with the mess...
  19. All of those rankings are (and correctly) judged against the one that is not mentioned: Total Compensation: #1 - in Twins history and it does not meet expectations. This is exactly what the problem with Mauer is. It is not that he is not a good player that has been a great player. It is that he is not the best player ever the Twins have had, even though he is compensated like he is.
  20. No they are not. Unless they become major leagues. As a matter of fact, a lot of the things the MLBPA has done helps keep the minor leaguers in this horrible situation. If they cared, they could have easily lowered the minimum salary by $100K to $407.5K (not spare change,) with the provision that $75 million (25 * 30 * 100K) goes in the pockets of minor leaguers, which, even with the 7500 number would amount to a $10K raise per player, a 100-150% raise. It is not only on the clubs. The MLBPA could do that single handedly in a cost-neutral way for the clubs, but it would cost major league players (and their agents, who are for sure driving part of this...)
  21. I think that you could do better than Willie Wilson with the second overall draft pick in that draft. Let us not forget that in addition to a whole bunch of arms that were drafted after Buxton (including the one I wanted the Twins to pick, Giolito,) there were a couple of all star SSs (Addison Russel and Corey Seager) who were selected after Buxton. And not to mention the catcher who was selected right after him. Plus the Twins did not need a centerfielder then. I think that all these guys will be more impactful that Willie Wilson was. That's why I don't like the comparison. If Buxton were a third round pick, I'd have no issues with the Willie Wilson comparison, but the Twins' club try to pass him as "the best player available", which likely is not the case. We can revisit in 5 years or so.
  22. Rewind 4 years. Substitute "Dozier" with "Willingham" Rewind 2 years. Substitute "Dozier" with "Suzuki" those sediments could have been valid with those two, but know we know better. Lessons got to be learned. Also, there is absolutely zero evidence that Dozier can provide "leadership" or "lead by example". He did not do that the past 3 seasons, why would next season(s) be different? Got.to.sell.high. And selling high means to pain you a bit when you do it (like it is the situation here with Dozier,) but you do it for the long run.
  23. Other than the numbers are plain ridiculous, the fact that a couple of MLB clubs (Braves and Cardinals) own all their minor league clubs, and most own at least one (like the Twins own E-town) makes that statement a strange oversimplification.
  24. Got to love it when according to that, the best possible comparable for Buxton is Willie Wilson...
  25. Yeah, he is "cocking" his arm back for fractions of a second. That's what he has always been doing and generated velocity and command. My theory is that he is thinking too much, talking to too many people who are suggesting stuff, trying to implement those suggestions and make the 'perfect pitch'. Someone should just tell him not to think, nobody cares about the outcome of the game this season, and just go out and have fun playing the game. Maybe he will find his zone that way, instead of being in analysis-paralysis misery.
