Wins are electrifying?

With Kimbrel, it's just that lean. There are certain pitchers that have a signature pre-pitch look or lean that makes them seem even more intimidating. I grew up in the 80s, so the guy I remember most doing it was Dave Stewart, but the guy who was the most fear-inducing in my lifetime staring with fierce eyes over the top of his glove to get the signs was Randy Johnson.

Okay, I'll admit. I may have been spoiled. I was at the near perfect game in person last year on my honeymoon that Scherzer threw, where he lost the perfecto with two outs in the 9th and still ended up with a no-no. So, because I've seen it in person, perhaps it's less impressive to me on TV to watch. Kershaw, though, I have seen him live. I have seen him on TV. I'd watch him over and over again. The man is simply amazing. There's simply a huge difference between he and the next tier of guys, but I do agree that Scherzer should be in consideration as the top of the next tier.

That's the issue I have, though. It may be because we knew the victims - a black church vs. a gay night club - that one was immediately deemed terrorism and another was so carefully danced around NOT calling it exactly that.

I've been pondering this quite a bit. After 9/11, I went on a flight (something I do very infrequently) about a year later and nearly missed my flight in spite of being nearly two hours early for the flight due to the increased security (and ironing/smoothing out those new processes). 10 years later, I get on a flight, and the process is the same as it was then, still much more intrusive than pre-9/11, but the system has realized inefficiencies and worked through those to create a better way of creating the same level of increased security while also being mindful of travelers' time. Not a single one of us has thought twice about ensuring we're at the airport an hour minimum before our flights to make sure we get through security. A tragedy happened, regulations to provide security to the nation were changed immediately, and society adjusted. No one cried about any rights being taken away, and anyone who has attempted to use "more intrusive" search techniques as a free pass to commit criminal acts upon travelers has been severely punished. We've seen a change in regulation work in providing increased security for the nation while admittedly making things more intrusive in the common traveler's life. When the nation sees those liberties as worthwhile to the security of the nation, things can be done. Until that point, we're waiting on a 9/11 accomplished with guns before anything can truly happen.

If we want to get into the second issue, I'd love to lead the board down that road, but this subject has as much to do with mental health as my Braves and the Twins do with the 2016 World Series, so it's essentially throwing words against the wall. There's a wonderful mental health discussion to be had in this country, but it has nothing to do with gun violence. Zero, Zilch. Nada. Once that distinction has been achieved by all parties, real discussion of the needs for mental health in this country can begin, because until that point, mental health will continue to be a reactionary funded area of the government, and one that constantly has other items tied to it that have no business being tied into mental health.

...but watch the coverage. It was very carefully articulated to nearly never use the word "terrorism" or "terrorist". Yet, from the get-go, this shooting was labeled as such. I cannot be the only one that smells something fishy there.

That all depends on why the guy is brought up. Eflin is replacing a rotation spot for multiple spots. Sometimes a guy is brought up just because he's on schedule in the minors, and he's sent down because they can get a different guy onto the schedule for the next time that rotation spot comes along. It's not always about performance, good or bad...

I know my thoughts are worth as much as I get paid to write them here, but in my view, the Indians and the Twins won day 1 of the draft, no questions asked.

It's not about top 10 dollars. It's about asking $3M+ and likely not going to be a top 10 pick. There's a ton of depth in the high school class in the guys that normally would be picked between 12-30 in a draft, as in probably 40-50 guys who would profile in that type of range normally, so many of them are using finances as their way to negotiate. -
But that is not the point being argued here. The point argued is that "Player X is hitting 25 home runs because of da roids!" That's just false. Also, it's not steroids. They are performance enhancing drugs, most of them human growth hormone of some variety. That's what allows a guy to get back on the field. And, for what it's worth, similarly beneficial drugs were extremely legal throughout most of baseball history, interestingly until just before the steroid era really took hold, when finally there were punishments in 2005, even though they were "banned" in 1971.

Now you're getting into a different territory altogether. Modern PEDs actually would have tremendous physical benefit to the performance of an endurance athlete, like a cyclist or a distance runner. The ability to help the body heal itself over elongated workouts is not exactly something that brings value to baseball. Not an apples to apples comparison. More like apples to potatoes.

This is nothing new. Players have always made money in the second half of their careers because they were paid peanuts in the first half of their careers. That's the basis of free agency. Owners get 6 years of incredibly cheap labor before the player can truly negotiate in an open market.

After round 4, draft picks aren't protected, meaning that if a guy doesn't sign, you don't get a comp pick, which is why you see that starting in round 4, high schoolers start to disappear until round 11. -
