  1. This may be sacrilege, but with Tom Clancy and Harlan Coben in the same general genre, I never got into Grisham. i've read his "big 3" early books - The Firm, The Pelican Brief, and The Client. The only other book of his I've read is Calico Joe.
  2. I just completed "Up, Up, and Away" about the Montreal Expos. Excellent and quick read. I'm not sure on the next from my kindle list I'll start reading while at the doctor's office with consumers - possibly a book on the argument to classify schizophrenia as a developmental disability rather than a mental illness. I'm forgetting the title of it at the moment, but it came highly recommended in my work circles.
  3. Race car driver Justin Wilson passed away. Indy car is a sport I'm surprised doesn't lose a driver or two each year.
  4. Cal's discussing a move to be the next former player to become a MLB manager without any managerial experience. I just can't imagine him anywhere but Baltimore, but I don't know how Showalter leaves Baltimore soon.
  5. I guess I wouldn't consider Touki a bust, consider that homerism if you'd like, but watching nearly every one of his starts since he was traded has really shown an incredible amount of talent.
  6. http://www.cnn.com/2015/08/21/us/subway-jared-fogle-informant-child-pornography-allegations/index.html Just chilling, disgusting, scummy. That woman deserves tremendous praise and respect because there's no way I could be that patient.
  7. Campus could be it. Right on Washington down the block from Stub and Herbs if I remember right. Been much too long since I got to enjoy a meal in the area.
  8. No, Mesa's in Dinkytown. This one was in stadium village. I had my first legal beer there as my boss let me be "on call" in the residence hall and have one beer to celebrate my 21st, so a friend bought me supper, including a beer.
  9. A Memorial Dip at Big Ten A Signature or Smokestack at Stub and Herbs A slice of the garlic cheese pizza at the pizza place next to Papa John's (forgetting the name right now) That's a high-quality Stadium Village weekend of food!
  10. I loved that about the Dinkytown and Washington Ave area of the East Bank - very good local food such that the chains really weren't all that in demand for me. I never left practice at the football complex and thought, "Gee, I would enjoy some McDonalds"...not when there was Erberts and Gerberts across the street from the McD's. Also probably helped that the Dinkytown Subway at that time was dirty as all get out and known to be a drug drop spot to keep me out of that place.
  11. No Big Ten subs or Erberts and Gerberts ruins my college enjoyment.
  12. The folks at Bad Lip Reading have broken down the debate: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufGlBv8Z3NU
  13. I think you'd be surprised. I know I'd be actively out campaigning against Klobuchar, not that she has much of a national presence anyway. Biden's a different story, but he's been painted as such a buffoon by Faux News and such without any defense from his own party, akin to Quayle, and how he was hung out to dry by the Republican Party during Senior Bush's presidency.
  14. This is exactly it. I like a guy who's real and honest about what he supports, even if it costs him in "popularity".
  15. Given the options of the current Republican field and Hillary, I'm voting Mickey Mouse. Has nothing to do with a "witch hunt", it has to do with an entire field of options (from either side, really) that I do not want to see at 1600 Pennsylvania.
  16. Except that after this year's changes to the voting population, those guys won't be voting anymore.
  17. I live in rural South Dakota, and I do completely understand that I'm not in a majority of the population, but it could truly hurt rural communities to bring in a $15/hr minimum. That last piece is why I celebrate places like San Francisco and Los Angeles (among many others) who have raised their minimum wage in the city. I understand and support the need for a federal minimum wage, but it should be a number that would be "getting by" at the lowest cost areas of the country. That way if my town chose to raise it from the federal minimum to $10/hr, that'd be a choice of the city, not something enforced at a federal or even state level.
  18. I wonder if he hits a wall like Bagwell, who I believe is on the same "no doubter" level for most, but there's that shred of hint that he might have, at one time, possibly, done a PED. That's suppressed Bagwell's voting, and I could see it holding back Beltre some as well because there were a lot louder accusations thrown his way than Bagwell during their respective careers. Just for comparison's sakes: Bagwell - .297/.408/.540, 149 OPS+, 2150 games, 2314 hits, 449 home runs. Beltre - .284/.336/.476, 115 OPS+, 2519 games, 2705 hits, 404 home runs Fred McGriff - .284/.377/.509, 134 OPS+, 2460 games, 2490 hits, 493 home runs Beltre obviously gets a bump for playing 3B at a high level, but is that enough to overcome a 34- and 19-point difference in OPS+ over the other two along with a 45 and 89 home run deficit as well (each doing so in less career games than Beltre)?
  19. I've always struggled with minimum wage in general. Dave mentioned $26-52K being "unlivable", yet it's pretty rare for someone around this area to make $52K as cost of living is incredibly cheaper. Combining our base jobs, and my wife and I don't make much more than that number. We're working extra jobs, but that's more due to a desire to pay off all debts than a need for those extra jobs to survive. We could live in our recently-purchased home and pay all the utilities along with our typical food and such and still put away a decent amount on just our base salaries without some of the debt from school and vehicles that we acquired before the marriage. How do you base a minimum wage when costs of living are so drastically different throughout the country? My home recently purchased had a doppleganger house in Wayzata go on the market that listed for just short of a half million dollars. Our home didn't even come near cracking $200K. That's a huge difference in what it takes to live comfortably, let alone just to get by. I'm not saying there should be no minimum wage, but I can tell you that a $15/hour part-time job in this area would be better than pretty much anything you could get outside of the medical field currently (and that obviously requires specific training/degrees) for part-time work. I'm not sure how to solve that, but I guess I'm saying that I'm against an arbitrary number enforced throughout the nation unless it's on the extreme low end of things, which is where the current minimum wage is.
  20. This sounded a lot worse in re-reading it, so I wanted to explain a bit further. We've never had any family question or comment before, during, or after table grace because someone was not praying. Part of that is the high level of German ancestry in my family, which is heavily live and let live. so prayer is intended to be incredibly private whether or not one is speaking a table grace out loud. We also have multiple Christian faiths in my family, so some will head to mass at 10pm Christmas Eve, others go to their church's service earlier on Christmas evening, some go to church on Christmas morning, so there's quite a bit of diversity in those who are Christian in the family, let alone the atheist and Wiccan members of the family. While I have had some great conversations with my cousins who believe differently, that can be said of my conversations with those who are Catholic or those who are Atheist. I won't say my family is perfect and would be easy to "come out" to, but I hope your family would understand and respect your decision and your life path.
  21. Being a family who has atheist members yet has very strong religion, I've found that no one says a word when they simply observe a moment of silence as the rest of the family says grace or declines to go to mass or service on Christmas Eve and instead stays home.
  22. He feels like Fred McGriff to me, a guy whose numbers say yes, but for some reason was never viewed as a superstar, so he won't end up making it, or if he does, it will be late in the balloting process.
  23. There should not be "sides". That's the whole problem.
  24. As someone who is in the process of getting certified to do foster parenting and has looked at the ridiculous cost of straight adoption, incentives to assist those who would give a loving home to children who are put up for adoption would be extremely welcome. I struggle so often with my friends who are unable to have children, yet they cannot afford adoption, and there are unwanted children throughout the country that are cluttering up our foster system simply because the cost to flat-out adopt them is too high.
  25. NFL Hall of Famer Frank Gifford dead at 84.
