  1. Lol Brock.... You know he is going to try.
  2. I hope there us a day when a relevant third party rises. I very much believe some form of the libertarian party could rise up with the millennial generation. We've been screwed over by policy and corporations more than any other in history, been forced to pinch pennies to not drown in credit card and student loan debt, are consistently underestimated and undervalued... We grew up in a nation with equal rights, we don't believe in the status quo, or doing things a certain way because that is how is always been done. This generation is different, and it's no surprise to me the conventional candidates are not winning this vote.
  3. The GOP has to understand, if the obstruct this process, they are going to get crushed in November. Attempting to spin this into "the American people get a vote!" is only going to work for the ultra right-wing voters that don't matter in an election. The moderates, who pay attention, are not going to like that approach. This is literally leaving a vacant seat on the most important decision making group in the country. I live in Iowa, I like Grassley, but if he obstructs this process I will not vote for him.
  4. Pope Francis is the best thing to happen to the church in my lifetime. Everything he has done, said, stood for has been for love, peace and the goodwill of humanity. I'm literally shocked that he was chosen as the Pope. Let me echo Jim in saying that lumping people together (even Christians) just isn't fair. They come in all shapes and sizes. Unfortunately, the loudest and most egregious of them all happen to be in politics. The things that are being said to pander to "the base" have to make you wonder why it is someone is pandering to them? Why don't we have a party that panders to... the majority? Would it be that hard to get them to vote? We already know the GOP is cracking. It has been tumultuous in the Senate over the last year, the Tea Party has been instrumental in creating bickering within the party, and now if Trump or Cruz get elected it wont matter who the Democrats put up there.
  5. That is very funny.
  6. Dave, ate we reading through the nyc laws (briefly), they are tough, but not outlandish. They do infringe on the right to bare arms, but nyc should have more strict laws than rural Iowa. I would not mind if all big cities adopted some form of those laws. Like I've said, we have to do something. I don't think the nation is ready to go that far with restrictions, but that is the direction we need to go.
  7. Are we still talking about guns? Wow. With millions of gun owners in the US, these outburst are coming from such a minority.... That said, the GOP/NRA has to compromise and give away some freedoms they have been exploiting. To do nothing.... to deny there is a problem.... simply perpetuates it. I despise the NRA. I was apart of them once, and do not believe their existence is based more on making money than defending rights. Enough of this. There has to be progress. Guns are not going away, but we need tangible progress to move forward.
  8. Chuck Grassley very clearly backtracked from the initial GOP rhetoric. The republicans could hurt themselves a lot with a destructive tactic. Grassley is pretty moderate, and came out against Cruz before the Iowa caucus saying "he is bad for Iowa." I'm a big Grassley fan, and as long as the nominee is qualified, and not a communist, they better have a hearing. If they don't... I guarantee the GOP loses almost every Senate seat they have up for election in swing states. Grassley is most likely fine, but I wouldn't put money on it if he leads a clear obstruction to the process. Plus, I don't ****ing get the GOP requesting Obama to not nominate someone. That is absolutely ludicrous. There is almost an entire year left. A whole year with a vacant seat in the Supreme Court is such a stupid idea, I can see Ted Cruz beating the horse to death over the next 10 months. Lastly, I'm happy to see this seat opened up. I absolutely think Scalia was a hindrance to American law. He also believed the constitution to be dead, which is not how it was intended to be. I just can't stomach his views. And you know what, if it didn't take death to remove a Supreme Court Justice, the reaction would be different. You can choose to look at Scalia as a hero for being a vocal leader in suppressing rights to certain groups of people, I choose to be thankful he is no longer in a position of power. Death is only the means to the end, nothing more.
  9. I don't think it is that simple. We have been a country with guns for so long, and have so many, this idea is simply impossible. Plus, you'd then be taking guns from law abiding, responsible people. Then, you have a higher proportion of guns in the segment of the population you don't want to have them. It just doesn't work. You dismiss shooting for sport so easily. My mother in law is an nra instructor. While i think the nra is more interested in making money than protecting rights, a lot of people enjoy going to the range and sporting for sport. These are not the people committing gun violence crimes. Perhaps giving away gun vaults to keep them safe from others would be more effective? The mass shooting are a complex problem right now. I think it starts with better tracking and more strict sales requirements. I don't know if keeping records of who owns what is the right answer, but it might be. At some point we can't keep doing what hasn't worked.... and we might have to give a small amount freedom in order to change.
  10. The topic of healthcare us a great example of what American politics, greedy capitalism, and bleeding hearts can do together. What we've ended up with is a little socialism mixed with a free market that takes advantage of consumers, and a constant struggle that only makes the industry more expensive and moor complicated. I hate our healthcare system. It is a laughing stock of the developed world. We spend more per person and receive lower quality of care. I highly doubt any other possible system could be much worse.... Although, it continues to get worse.
  11. I don't see any benefit in limiting the amount of clips. If the recent shootings have shown us anything, it's that terrorists know how to reload. That isn't going to solve any problems. The background checks is reasonable, but shouldn't be done with an executive action.
  12. Good luck to that kid, he's going to need it. I'm not losing sleep over it. This is still a good class. I'm really pumped about green coming to mn. Kid has some skills.
  13. I plan on cutting the cord this year. Might wait until baseball is over, we'll see. I'm coming up on my year with direct tv, so prices are going to jump in a few months. if there was no black out on mlb tv, I never would have signed back up with direct tv. It's only a matter of time until that is lifted. The days of big cable are behind us.
  14. I've known for a while Cruz was going to win here. He is the type of religious zealot the GOP in the state vote for. Its embarrassing. I can't eloquently convey the amount of ignorance in the base here. The best thing that could happen for politics here, is if Iowa is no longer the first vote. I did not experience the Cruz campaign lying at my location... I didn't care to listen to "speeches" by the campaign captains either. Cruz will be exposed. Side not. A fellow voter told me he didn't even hear the Democrat candidates talk about God once. I couldn't hold me tongue. I asked why that matters and if mentioning God makes any difference if the message was to alienate a group of people. No answer. I later got to have a nice discussion with my wife about bigotry the GOP expresses toward other religions... especially Atheists. Its almost as bad as if you're gay... Fun times voting in Iowa.
  15. I loved the book. The movie was ok, but missing some key pieces that made the book so great. Also, watney was an engineer too. The book did a better job of explaining that astronauts have to have multiple skills. Thought was strange the movie glossed over this. As far as Matt Damon goes... I thought he did fine. I would have preferred Edward Norton.
  16. I'm so far down on Meyer, I don't care what they do with him. He can't throw strikes, can't repeat his delivery and only had one stretch if baseball that justified a high rating (and he looked terrible in the all star game that year). I don't get why people are so hung up on him at this point. Let him move into relief and try to provide value now. You all are worried about Perkins and jepsen in front of him yet still cling to the irrational thought he could be an ace. That is over. The Randy Johnson comparison is ridiculous.
  17. Is anyone that worried about Snelson? I'm all for talent, but that kid is a diva. I'm a big fan of firing limegrover and the qb coach. The offensive scheme was a joke. Recruits change their minds, don't get accepted into schools, get hurt, flunk out, never live up to the hype et cetera. Once the scheme is better it will attract more talent. Why would anyone want to go to Maryland? The team is a terribly coached team that has a flashy offense. I don't want the gophers to be them by any means, but a better offense will make a difference.
  18. Funny, I suggested Grassley before reading that article. The alternative suggestions.... none have much stream in Iowa. Carson has spent the most time in Iowa and I could see him winning, but he has no chance at other parts if the country. Rubio and Bush have also been advertising heavily. That is it though. I doubt the average conservative voter in Iowa knows much about anyone else.
  19. Who is the alternative? I'm still voting Paul, even though my vote will not make a difference. I almost decided to vote Sanders, I just can't get on board with him while I have other options. Bring from Iowa, the best candidate to me U.S. senator Grassley. Supporter of alternative energy, on the finance comity of the Senate, advocate if the constitution. If he were in this race, I believe he would be killing it.... Especially in Iowa.
  20. This team wasn't good enough to win big games. I'm not sure who to blame the lackluster offense on, but it just wasn't good enough. If one of those field goals was converted to a touch down they win the game. Pretty tough to win games with field goals. Going forward this team is in the rise. The drawbacks of teddy were on full display. He is going to struggle in this league with his release and conservative nature. I don't buy that receivers aren't getting open, I question whether he can make big throws. Luckily, I do think they compete for the playoffs again next year.
  21. You're welcome twins daily. Feels good to receive affirmation. I'll continue to attempt to hijack threads, ramble aimlessly about being mad, cut down opinions like the amazon, and inject wit.
  22. The big 12 is a garbage conference right now. All offense and no defense. They don't even try. If the gophers had any semblance of a competent offense they would have beat the best team in the conference (they are the best when healthy). I hope it doesn't go to 8. Mostly, I really don't want single conference championships. The sec bias is already stupid. I could see some years that conference getting 3 teams in if it expands to 8. I like it this way.
  23. These states have terrible voter turnout. What is wrong here is the better question. Republicans have a solid voting base, always have. This article also fails to mention it being a part of the evangelical south. The US has its own problems, without invading Syria. Places like this have problems. It's funny, in the article it says these areas have become red over the past few decades. Why aren't the conditions improving? They are getting worse. If there is one thing this article proves, is that the meme of a neighbor sitting at home collecting checks is what the Democrats want. I'm no liberal, and believe we shouldn't be afraid to ask things out of the people receiving benefits. However, I really hate how this article portrays people on assistance. I know there is a percentage that are complacent enough and have no motivation to improve. However, how many of those people have no way to improve and have no reason to work a sorry ass minimum wage job to just pay rent each month? Seriously, when I had to get a job at Wallgreens after college to get by it felt like the biggest waste of my time, and it was over minimum wage. Places like that are where isis has targeted in the middle east. When the economy is based on something besides coal I believe lives will be improved. All there is to it. Need something to feed the economy.
  24. Iowa is a lock if they win out too. No way do they not make it. I also think msu is a lock if they win out. After that, I think it gets a lot more murky. This is why so many people advocated for this. That last spot is going to be a toss up. Someone is going to be pissed no matter what.
  25. The 2 parties would never allow that to happen. They have to much money and too much influence. They have polarized to divide the country into 2fairly even groups. It's going to take a political revolution to change it. I'm only 30 so a little too young to be the one to do it. But I plan on trying at some point in my life.
