  1. The car purchase wasn't super wise, but I had gone through a succession of lemons, with the final one, literally exploding at my first interview after law school.
  2. Dude, you guys invest!? My student loans (my own fault for such aspiration) saddles any ability to save (plus car loans); no way any bank should give me mortgage loan, but I bet if I asked, they would be game, predatorily.
  3. Without a government entity, such a transfer post-death could never happen. In the non-government utopia you conceive parents would have to donate such funds during their lives. And of course, the government fosters the economic system that allows for such wealth and the donation there of. Not to speak of the governments involvement in the enforcement of the corporate form and shareholders rights. But right, the government was totally outside that wealth accusation. Ha.
  4. I just want to say I think this is super productive conversation and hope others (non-super-regulars) chime in on how we should tax, what we should tax, and who we would should tax. It's just nice to play these out. Whether your a fan of paying down the deficit or public works, taxes are (a) necessary (evil).
  5. Why wouldn't they demote DeJong when Sano comes back? And if they prefer a position player to demote (Cave, Garver, Astudillo, release Adrianza), there's a better rostered pitcher than DeJong...
  6. I grew up in trailers and rented homes, and attended a half dozen public schools as my parents sought employment moving from state to state. My parents never graduated college and were a secretary and a carpenter; they weren't able to "buy" a home (meaning take out a mortgage) until I was in high school, and to their regret, could not help me pay for college. They didn't provide me with wealth, but they did teach me empathy, to which I am eternally grateful. Yet, I still had privilege because I was a white male, grew up with two parents who had sense of work ethic which they could pass on, and had parents savvy enough to rent homes in good school districts. (And because I worked my ass off, I'm uber privileged now with a several degrees, including law, still haven't lost the empathy though). You know what they say about assumptions.
  7. I think everyone dies, but Jon and Dany leave a baby for one or two survivors to raise; perhaps Sam and Gilly.
  8. Right, inter-generational wealth is so far removed from the actual earners, that the basis it shouldn't be taxed loses all credibility.
  9. What is the basis of other taxes? Like sales tax, or income tax? A society needs taxes to operate. The basis of inheritance tax is that the person benefiting from influx of wealth didn't earn it, which seems like a better rationale than, say taxing income.
  10. Well aware about Clinton's crime bill, one of many reasons I'm not a fan of that President. Clinton was hardly a liberal. And, just as a person can both have "black friends" and be a racist, a President can have positive outcomes for black people and still be a racist. And thanks proving my point that you can't even see how problematic and deeply shameful your post which I quoted is.
  11. Well I don't want to tax non-liquid assets, perhaps beyond stock.
  12. https://www.actionnetwork.com/entertainment/game-of-thrones-odds-spoilers-first-death-season-8
  13. Not all of it, it could have been inherited, gain through capital gains, etc.
  14. I'm not sure I'd be in favor of taxing assets, or at least things like real property, and tangibles, which tend to help the economy by being acquired. Money sitting in the bank doing nothing, or mere ownership of stock doing nothing, I think that's fair game (though I'd want to have limitations on stock/money held for purposes of retirement being taxed; i.e., after a certain amount it's reasonable to tax that as well). This would create incentives for people to spend their money to acquire assets that actually help the economy.
  15. I just want to quote this for posterity in case your better judgment persuades you to delete it. (Should you, I could be persuaded to do so as well). Otherwise, your post isn't worth responding to, as you conveniently ignore the fact in the same paragraph that black men are six times more likely to face incarceration for the same crime than whites. No one disputes that the underlying behavior is criminal; that's a straw man.
  16. Marwin played more in the outfield last year than the infield, iirc.
  17. Privileged by Kyle Kover. Edit: Can't recommend this article enough.
  18. Fan graphs on Ziegler. Seen at mlbtraderumors
  19. Oh your dad you and you played golf with someone who can sell his house and take a loss yet afford to fly into Chicago on a whim? Jesus. Well, if you have inheritance coming, I hope we tax the f* out of it. This is the most bourgeoisie response to this conversation that I can imagine. And I'm sure, you're "I'm only upper middle class." No wonder you hate Bernie.
  20. I appreciate your post beyond this paragraph. Marshall was being as glib as Greenwald; hence is twitter. Greenwald has long been on the nothing burger that is the Mueller report, and we still don't know the truth of that, nor does Greenwald beyond his ties to Wikileaks which for better or worse is concerning. Greenwald is one of the only anecdotes of the supposed left; it is not only Marshall that calls his current stance into question (see this article on his seemingly reversal, it is only at the end that author uses Greenwald's thoughts/words against his current stance). That Josh Marshall should feel shame is stupid. Stupid. Greenwald has doubted this investigation before there was evidence to actual doubt it (save for his wiki friends); Marshall is a practical liberal who, if you read TPM, is unwilling to go too far, but still entertains that Trump was up to some awful ****. And really, why minimize Trump's actions, why bring up Greenwald at all, why not focus again at children separated from parents, convenient deals with Russian oligarchs, a Trump tower here, a Trump tower there. Do we need criminality to impeach? Is this your president? Do you not fear corruption? Even if legal? Why minimize Trump's involvement with Russia whether or criminal or not? I guess I need to know where your coming from to understand. As much as you say you're merely policing rhetoric, I don't see a lot posts decrying the state of the executive.
  21. You don't think the 1% has some culpability in the wealth disparity? Do you think it's a good economic system to have half the wealth concentrated among such a few people?
  22. Look, I think you, like anyone, picks up what they want to hear on twitter and the media. For instance, your Glen Greenwald/Mueller report is a nothing burger rant just a week ago. We're all guilty of it, and the righteous policing of the media/twitter when it suits you is disingenuous. Trump calling any humans animals is deplorable. His policy at the border is deplorable. It bears repeating ad naseum. Trump is using the supposed M-13/animal threat to treat all refugees as, well, animals, what with the caging of children and all. That twitter got taken with a year old video clip now isn't as problematic as you suggest. It's probably a year of Trump's BS that has put that clip in further context, and people are reasonably angry, knowing now what we know of child separation and his efforts to build the wall. The Nazi comment was an absurdity to demonstrate another absurdity. You're clearly not minimizing Nazism. Clearly. But you are, either directly (in the past) or indirectly (here), minimizing Trump's indecency/moral corruptibility. (And, for the record, I think you're a good, thoughtful dude, but I think we can run afoul when we start policing rhetoric in regard to Trump, who is objectively awful. Don't be that guy.)
  23. We should probably stop saying that the Nazis were horrible, so as to avoid recycling that message, and demonstrating that Western Civilization survived in spite of them (i.e. maybe they weren't that bad).
  24. If you wear a Turtle costume are you a furry?
  25. Absolutely not. But the ability to lose well I think is an attribute towards winning in the long run. And if not, I admire it anyways.
