  1. My favorite quote of his: "The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in the mind at the same time, and still retain the ability to function. One should, for example, be able to see that things are hopeless and yet be determined to make them otherwise." From The Crack-Up.
  2. Now it's attacking? I thought it was resisting arrest that they deserved the beat down. Look at those goal posts move!
  3. If you're in favor of beating people to a pulp; I'm certainly not on your side.
  4. That was a fun game. Let's add Arraez to our known depth. The lineup is fine, even with more than a few injuries. And Pineda toughed another quality start, and the bullpen held up. I still worry about pitching depth, but the likes of Morin and Magill have been oddly effective. Even if Pineda goes 6 innings and 3 earned runs the rest of the season, that has huge value as a our fifth, if not fourth starter.
  5. If there's an injury to Castro, you just move Astudillo there. The dumb move would be to DH Astudillo with Castro in the lineup.
  6. My point was not that it wasn't rushed, rather the writing in the time they did have also failed to convey the change in Dany. Of course more time would have helped, but I think the writing is the main culprit.
  7. https://www.fangraphs.com/standings/playoff-odds Updated odds: 87.3% chance to make the playoffs; 72.5% chance to win the division; 6.3% chance to win the World Series.
  8. Authority needs to be monitored. If they don't like it, they are free to find employment elsewhere.
  9. Look, the thing about excessive force is that there is no excuse. These men and women are trained for these situations; it's not as if we just plucked a rando off the street and gave them a gun and told them good luck dealing with the baddies. If these people can't keep their cool in the face of irrational criminals, they need to get a new job. Much of police misconduct I think results from negligent hiring practices, and perhaps lack of training. We simply can't have that old mindset that allows for bullies and hotheads to be hired as police officers. We need people with a psychological profile for nonviolence, restraint and the ability to deescalate.
  10. To me, the didn't need necessarily more time to develop Dany but better writing. In the final episode she is talking crazy, from that big speech, to alone with Jon, when she says she knows what good is because she knows what good is. She didn't need to be violent, but they needed to show that she was losing grip on reality, and what kind of world she actually desired; that could have been feathered in throughout the season, without any additional episodes.
  11. Well if you agree the cops should be placed on administrative leave (hopefully without pay), there's not a lot of disagreement here. Well, beyond that the police should be allowed to punch people in the face when it's not necessary...
  12. The guy isn't blameless and he will face charges for resisting arrest (in addition to getting beat up). What charges (or any accountability) do the police face for using excessive force?
  13. So they are wrong? It's not for individual police to decide what kind of punishment a person should receive. Resisting arrest is its own crime that needs to prosecuted and tried. The police taking it upon themselves to give someone what they deserve runs afoul of our entire system of justice.
  14. How the prediction markets got that right I don't really fathom. Not as awful as I expected; all in all, a pretty okay conclusion to what became a convoluted, almost impossible to end story. The Stark sequence at the end was very well done.
  15. Tyrion gets executed in the opening scenes. Drogan refuses to kill Jon. Dany gets killed by someone unexpected. Jon has opportunity to take the throne, and refuses. Queen Sansa.
  16. I think deployment can mitigate the lack of depth for a time; but come playoffs I don't even think deployment, how ever well done, can mask lack of talent.
  17. I think the lack of knowledge about depth itself tips the scale towards concerning rather than mere neutral. I think you present meaningful anecdotal evidence that the deployment of depth can take many shapes, some of those which can mitigate depth, but I'm not sure that Rocco is actually in charge of such deployment (thus how meaningful is the Rays data?); I mean we did just roster the second Austin Adams, whom the first also drew who responses (they met today, evidently and charmingly).
  18. It's only the lack of pitching depth that worries. The lineup has depth both on the roster and at AAA. I hope the FO recognizes the opportunity, and ownership approves signing Kimbrel after the draft (wishful thinking). Like others have noted, the Twins can acquire RPers through trade, given their soon to be Rule 5 eligible players of value. I also think Mejia and/or Romero will emerge as a solid option when they grow accustomed to their new role. The Twins really need starting pitching depth, because Kohl Stewart sounds like a lot of losses, and he's the first guy. I hope Thorpe, and Gonsalvez when he returns start dealing. I see dealing for starting pitching less likely, given the cost. Here's to the team's health!
  19. Right. It's seems totally inconsistent to argue that Trump is a grave threat and then to not impeach because of political expediency. It's the kind of calculated cynicism that makes the Democrats seem awfully elite and I think pushes people away from the party. And it's just not leadership. I guess this would be my response to Brock's earlier question about the political viability of impeachment. It will look like leadership, show consistency, and avoid decision-making based on political outcome rather than what's right for the country.
  20. My not seeing Pence impeach being proffered as a mainstream idea is of course anecdotal, but I do follow a bunch of lefty journalist on twitter and just haven't seen it. I end up not reading the WaPo all that much as I use my free reads early and often, so I missed those that you mention. So I don't really think this idea has much traction, and of course it's bat**** crazy, is a strike against it being taken seriously. The only basis I can think of would be him knowing about Flynn's dirt prior to taking office, which is pretty thin gruel. Worse impeachment of both Trump and Pence would be pretty self-serving for Pelosi, which even an unsophisticated public could sniff out. I'm in favor of impeachment only because we shouldn't set a precedence that unlawful behavior (esp. obstruction of justice) is okay if there's some risk of political fallout against the impeaching party. I honestly don't think impeachment would move the needle either way much, as the public is already bored of the Mueller report.
