  1. For the lazy.
  2. I hate to quibble, but if it has nothing to do with smoking pot, why would you say that the other person lacks integrity? I'm not sure why we need to judge this other person at all, we'll never know what exactly happened, or how much culpability each person acted with. These were high school kids -- that Gonsalves was ever put the in the position of attesting to another adolescent's actions is what gets my goat.
  3. Are we really advocating cutting people out of your life for smoking pot? Gonsalves probably thought about that, and in his estimation, believed his punishment would be less severe than to his friend or more likely refused on principal to speak up. It's for him decide, not you. I seriously doubt Gonsalves is some victim of this crazy pothead highschool athlete imposing his pot-smoking on those around him. I say good on Gonsalves; it shows self-belief and integrity.
  4. Fowler resigned with the Cubs...
  5. I think that's just being floated to demonstrate the Republicans obstructionism - as many Republican Senators have already reacted to questions asking if they would meet or consider Sandoval; to which they've responded with the same refusal. For my part, I'd be deeply disappointed if Obama nominated Sandoval and he was approved. (He's socially liberal (pro choice) but is said to be anti-labor.) Edit: Sandoval withdrew his name from consideration, evidently.
  6. 4 to 4, with no Scalia, is a net win for liberals. Stalling doesn't really hurt the Democrats only for fear of losing the Presidency. Sending forward a liberal nominee, would certainly meet rejection (as you suggest), no matter how well qualified, but it will also serve to turn out the vote, ensuring not only the Presidency but also the Senate; Hillary (or Bernie!) could nominate the same liberal justice with the force of a mandate. Of course there's some risk, but it's not so obvious that Obama shouldn't settle for the single when he could hit something in the gap.
  7. I want to add a couple things: 1) Lame-duck president occurs only after the election, when a successor has been chosen; the president is considered a lame-duck because the symbolic-heft of the presidency resides with the electee. Six months before that successor is chosen means that Obama cannot be a lame-duck. There is no other leader to look to as of now. 2) Biden's comments were premised on the notion that a Justice would resign in the election year. I.e. that a conservative Justice would resign to allow Bush to make nominee rather than his successor, somewhat gaming the nomination process to keep the court conservative. In such a scenario, there would be no vacancy as there is now, which is a big, big deal. The equivalence would be Ginsburg resigning this year and staying on the Court until Obama picked her replacement, the Republicans would have legitimate complaint about such an obvious political strategy. Here's Biden's statement: "It is my view that if a Supreme Court justice resigns tomorrow or in the next several weeks or resigns at the end of the summer, President Bush should consider following the practice of a majority of his predecessors and not — and not — name a nominee until after the November election is completed"
  8. Today, Republicans agreed that the Judiciary Committee will not allow any hearings, much less a confirmation. I just don't see how this plays out well for them. Just vote the nominee down, there's no need for obstructionism, which will just work against them in the general election.
  9. In the interview he talked about Mauer's increased strikeouts and how that wasn't supposed to happen to Joe; so clearly he saw something. Ryan was resisting pinning Joe's failures one-cause (blurry vision), and seemed more satisfied with the notion that Joe "hasn't been quite right" and insinuated maybe he won't ever be.
  10. I agree with the premise of a no vote is a vote for the Republicans. And I think this points to the fact that the Democratic Party and their platform have moved so far to the right that many do not identify with that platform. If Hillary were to keep talking up income disparity and reigning in bad actors in Wall Street, she might be able to keep Bernie's supporters engaged. If Rubio ends up being the nominee, I think she'll fare better lurching further left than trying to play the moderate.
  11. I don't think that's true. I think you're underestimating Bernie's liberal appeal to working class and young people, regardless of identity.
  12. I made no contention about whether Bernie was acting on the good of the party. I don't even necessarily see acting for the good of the party as an attribute. I was merely rebutting that Hillary was holding back attacking Sanders for the good the party. As you suggest, Sanders is hardly an establishment democrat, and his values are properly divorced from the DNC.
  13. It is an important distinction, but one I don't see playing out in the national election in the way proposed here that Black people will turn out significantly more for Hillary than Bernie in the National Election; I just don't think that's true. In no way do I mean to diminish the very real need for people to see someone like them holding the highest role in the office. I want a first woman president; I know what it would mean to the women in my family, and to me personally. As I've suggested before, I'd prefer Elizabeth Warren to the field. And I wish it was Hillary that was espousing liberal ideals rather than selling her capacity to get something lesser done. (And I do think Hillary will turn out women voters that Bernie would not.)
  14. I don't necessarily disagree with you on any of your points, but we're already in nuance as opposed to carpet-bombing his idealism. What's politically possible will be dictated by the election. As a starting point, I feel the Democrats have far too often start bargaining at the 50-yard line. Let the election mandate a progressive agenda, and Congress will still shape that agenda. (I also think Congress would look very different should Bernie get elected). My point is that the kind of cynicism it takes to rebut Bernie is exactly what people are reacting that drives his (and perhaps Trump's) support.
  15. Okay, let's see the destruction of Bernie's policy on banks and income equality. Have at it. Because I think the notion that Clinton is playing nice for the 'good of the party' is laughable. She got beat handedly in New Hampshire, she has little reason to hold back for appearance sake; moreover, she and the DNC haven't been acting for the good of the party all primary season (with the early debate schedule etc.). I think the real reason so many are being vague about the potential critique of Sander's view on income equality and banks is because those arguments don't have much traction with the American people anymore. I hope the Republicans make the free enterprise, trickle-down economics argument.
  16. No need to patronize me. And I think you're oversimplifying how marginalized groups vote, though I take your point. In the general election, I think Black people will be plenty motivated to vote for the candidate who candidly talks about criminal justice reform (which will be both Hillary and Bernie). My point continues to be that those motivated to vote for Hillary in the primary, will likely vote for Bernie in the general, rather than just stay home because he's an old white guy.
  17. If Hillary can generate such excitement, so can Bernie. I mean what is that they seen in Hillary, that Bernie somehow lacks.
  18. I think he would in the general election. I don't really see why Hillary would somehow turn them out in the general, but they'd stay home if Sanders was the candidate. I understand in the primaries they are going for Hillary, but that doesn't indicate that they'd stay home in the general.
  19. Oh another white guy with a Semi-automatic last night in my former city, Kalamazoo, killing six people at random.
  20. This is what you keep hearing from longtime Democrats. However, the general election polls don't bear that out (not that they mean much), but Sanders is matching up much better against Republican opponents than Hillary. I know Sanders has tapped into that White working class angst, my conservative (never vote Dem) Uncle for one, said he'd choose Sanders over the field. The fear of socialism I don't think has as much sway for the under-40 crowd. I think Rachel Maddow tapped into why Bernie has success because he represents liberal values far more than Democrats have for last 30 or so years. What precisely are you basing that Bernie has "no chance" other than a gut feeling?
  21. No I agree. The drama and characters are good enough to keep watching, and when you begin to figure out the world and the different factions its really rewarding. As an aside, I really enjoyed the Mormonism angle. It made me smile as I figured out what exactly was going on with that faction.
  22. Opera-like in terms of its themes and drama. A lot like Battlestar Gallatica.
  23. I agree, it's excellent. Dark, realistic space opera. It's a slow build, but worth it. It took me a while to orient myself to where the action was taking place - namely different asteroids in the asteroid belt.
  24. I suppose it is common place to solicit like that. But its oddly suggestive that the seat is for sale, and that they know they don't have good Constitutional argument.
