  1. I think there's two factors that people often neglect when they suggest that another Republican would be doing better: 1) that these republicans would lack the ground swell support that Trump gains both from the base and those who normally don't vote, 2) the career-politician, corrupt-insider claim against Clinton falls flatter with career politicians making the claim. Kasich is more like Pence than the primaries showed. He's darn likable but he's swallowed by his religion. For instance he proposed an agency to promote "Judeo-Christian values." I imagine there's a bunch of stuff that would be unpalatable to moderate, secular Americans. All that said, I do think Kasich would be polling ahead though the electoral math would still be unfavorable. In the end I think Kasich wouldn't make the arguments against Clinton to rally the base, and gets the losing side of the Bush v. Gore election.
  2. I enjoyed this piece on athlete's responses to Trump's "locker room" talk.
  3. Well if more polls like this NBC one show a 11 to 14 point lead for Clinton, it very well might.
  4. The last thing Clinton wanted was to put Trump away; so there was strategic softness on the part of Clinton, I think.
  5. Good for Anderson Cooper exasperatedly asking "Have you ever done those things?" Which Trump, only when pressed, denied.
  6. I have trouble playing out any end game without reverting to that they are just stuck with Trump, and that's it. I think logistically, it would be impossible to get another name on the ballot; however, the Party could support a Write in candidate. Though wouldn't it be simpler to just throw the weight of the Party behind Gary Johnson, if he'd accept it?
  7. Heh. Maybe this scandal really is the thousandth cut. @MarkHalperin/status/784586126313000960 "On the record quote from Spencer Zwick, main fundraiser for Paul Ryan now & Romney in 2008 & 2012, on move to replace Trump now"
  8. Whelp, Trump was recorded saying some pretty awful stuff about women in 2005; not sure that it matters at this point, but we have more proof the guy is a total creep.
  9. Interesting take on Trumps effect on NFL players.
  10. I enjoyed it. The story worries me in that it may turn into a Lost like mystery of convulsion and predictability, but the acting is top notch, really.
  11. I don't think we disagree on the outcome of the debate; my point is even though Pence "won" the debate, he did little to help Trump. I'll quote Nate Silver: I think Pence's job wasn't so much to look the part as to stymie the Trump narrative coming out of the last debate. I think Pence's reasonableness creates a story and a controversy in its disparity to Trump himself.
  12. Depends on what his job is. He played the classic Republican as competently as anyone, but he did little to buttress Trump's case (even sometimes stating positions in opposition of Trump). Looks more like 2020, than 2016. That said, Kaine is annoying. He was eager and naively rude. He came off as that annoying kid who reminds the teacher that she forgot to assign homework.
  13. An anonymous source sent the NY Times Trump's previously unreleased tax returns from 1995 which showed substantial losses, enabling Trump to avoid paying taxes for nearly two decades: Smart indeed.
  14. He came to my mind as well. Speaking of Cruz, has anyone damaged their brand as much as he has this election cycle? He was always an ass, but the non-endorsement at the Republican convention and now the endorsement of Trump once the polls looked close...
  15. That's fair. I guess my point is that when we wish for more third-party involvement, we may tend to paint those parties in the image that we would have them, then what their base might actually constitute. I know many people identify as Libertarian, but I don't necessarily hear much consistency on positions beyond those pillars of free market and anti-regulation. I'm sure I would do the same thing if we're conceptualizing some party to left of the Democrats.
  16. I think we're all for reigning in wasteful spending, but Libertarians promote neoliberal policies and oppose any and all regulation as a matter of ideology. I don't really see how that's different from what the Republicans have been claiming to offer for decades (although in practice, they spend, as you say on defense, etc.).
  17. Bullpen effectiveness, depth, and better implementation I think have quite a bit to do with it as well. Beyond true ace pitchers, most bullpens possess a guy who is likely to perform better than the starter with more than a 100 pitches. It's about mitigating risk both to the starter and within the game situation.
  18. Until Meyer can make it out of the fifth inning or compile a 100 pitches, I wouldn't let our tin foil get too shiny on the injury conspiracy front.
  19. Well so much for fireworks (edit: actually didn't take long for them to get into it), but the fake flattery is one part hilarious, though another part awkward.

  21. We expect a summary by the end of the day.
  22. Some hopeful news from Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN
  23. Bombs, stabbings, police killing the unarmed, the police attacked by protesters, ho-hum.
  24. Derek Falvey, who Passan tweeted was finalist yesterday, is also similarly young at 33. (Looks like I'm too old for the job. Oh well. Resume withdrawn.)
