  1. Ken Rosenthal: Sources: Legitimate chance of Sale trade to #Nationals. Robles, Giolito would go to #WhiteSox. Teams haggling over final pieces in deal.
  2. There's many ways to achieve standardization. Tests are one the cheapest and, imho, the least effective method. In general, I think we should be less considered with evaluation and more concerned with the process.
  3. And stickied/pinned.
  4. A publicity stunt? Not sure what affect Gore's conversation would have given how Trump's making his cabinet. I don't think he's picked the head of EPA yet, but that choice should give us more insight into the force of Trump's belief in climate change.
  5. I don't need an itemized list to give Falvey and Levine a chance with our young pitching. There's some young arms, including Stewart, who stand a chance of developing under the new regime.
  6. I think that's wishful thinking. It makes far more sense for the Dodgers to hold onto Urias and forego Kohl Stewart or whoever would sweeten the pot. Maybe the Twins can get Urias, but it will because of Dozier's value not because they sweetened the pot.
  7. Ventura being the more sane selection?
  8. I though country kitchen guy was KevinHassig or something like that? DPJ, as irascible as he could be, would be nice to have around here.
  9. That Terry Ryan, always trying to hold prospects back, teach them a lesson, get them off his lawn.
  10. I think Revere would be a fine bench option and 25th. Imagine he still has range in the outfield and speed on the basepaths and would probably be a better bench asset than Danny Santana. Wellington Castillo was also nontendered and would be a much better bench option than Murphy (he'd also make a nice platoon pair with Castro (.850ish OPS against Lefties). I don't know how is defense is though.
  11. Even if he fails, our populace may not care, or even know. Like the Carrier deal, where he essentially traded corporate giveaways for jobs. The only thing people will 'hear' is that the jobs didn't leave for Mexico.
  12. Guess who said the following quotes:
  13. There was a disadvantage for the Twins in that other teams would outspend them and eat the penalties; whether or not the Twins didn't 'choose' to do the same ignores that their were financial restraints on the Twins that put them at a disadvantage. It's not as if the Twins have had a 50 million payroll the past couple years. That the Dodgers, Yankees, etc. can no longer blow past their pool is a boon to the Twins.
  14. Thanks. Any lost benefit from finishing last for the Twins should be (let's hope) short lived. A scheme that's tied to revenue should benefit the Twins more in the long-run more than a scheme tied to the previous years record. The teams really hurt by the new scheme are big-market losers like Anaheim.
  15. The advantage for the Twins is that teams cannot no longer go over their cap. The cap is hard; the Twins method of spending right-up to the cap (or avoiding penalties for going over) will no longer hurt them. The Twins will still get a larger pool than half of the teams (6 million), but it will be based on revenue. Add in the QO penalties to the international pool, the Twins should be in a much better position for signing international youngsters (now 25 and under) than they were just a year ago. (And I didn't recall that the international pool size was tied to the previous year's record? Was that in the old CBA.)
  16. Changes to the international money pool should help the Twins. Stark
  17. I'd think the QO amount would have to be lower given the new system; if they keep it at that amount no team will get compensated for those under 50 million dollar contracts.
  18. Oh my.
  19. I worry that whatever the recounts (or other investigations) uncover will be paper-thin and circumstantial--leading to just enough wisps of hope that Democrats misdirect their efforts and resources--but hardly enough to affect the outcome of the election in any meaningful way. I think it's a mistake for Clinton to 'join' the recount efforts. A third-party, maybe Russ Feingold, should provide oversight if it's needed.
  20. I don't discount what you're saying. I just don't know what to make of any of it, and I'm not sure that recount is going to give us any clearer picture or allay many's distrust of the results.
  21. Beyond robbing of the soul of the game, it would universalize a strike zone, depriving an element of strategy in there being no need for game-to-game (umpire-to-umpire) adjustment. The drama of whether its a ball or a strike, both to the fan and the hitter, would become moot, as it wouldn't take long for the hitters (and the fans) to learn with certitude the dimensions of that automated strike zone. (The result would probably be more walks at first, followed by a lot more offense as the pitchers are further forced to pitch in a concrete zone). I think this would also have collateral effects on the diverse means to successfully getting a strike call, further standardizing a pitcher's skillset/repetiore/technique and a catcher's ability to effect the game. Thus making the game boring and the players copies of each other.
  22. Even if Clinton found more than 27,000 votes in Wisconsin and 11,000 in Michigan, she still would not win the electoral college (258 to 280); additionally, she would need to find 70,000 votes in Pennsylvania (winning 278 to 260). Very unlikely to find that many votes, even if there was hacking and other kinds of fraud. If there was a concerted effort to steal the election, there's probably not much of a paper trail.
  23. At least current students and potential students. Having taught at the undergrad level, I used to be very strict about this rule even as it related to former students, but eventually it seemed silly and unnecessary to create a barrier for people I'd no longer have a conflict of interest with, and who could (and would) be pretty relateable friends. (Probably different from you experience teaching teenagers in Taiwan, but I know I missed out on a few friendships by adhering too strictly to my rule.)
