  1. The front office is so willing to spend........ that the payroll is virtually the same as last year. Personally, I think Garza would have needed an over the top offer to come back to the Twins since the same behavior modifiers are still in place here.
  2. Joe Mauer completes a metamorphosis, and hits 36 home runs!
  3. I think it is sad that when we have the technology for instant correct calls, instead, we have to embrace a talent the cheats the rule of the game, and continue to have the game impacted by getting calls that are not correct.
  4. At least the coaching staff doesn't have to convert him to "pitch to contact". Yikes.
  5. Nolasco was 5-8 with the Marlins last year. That is the team that is comparable to the Twins, not the Dodgers. What pitcher wouldn't fair better on a good team rather than a bad team? (espeicially for W-L record) ("Nolasco, 31, was 13-11 with a 3.70 ERA last season with the Marlins and Dodgers but 8-3 with a 3.52 ERA in 16 games (15 starts) with playoff-bound Los Angeles following a midseason trade. ")
  6. Exactly. So from this perspective, it appears that if they dedicate half of the TV money to salary, (and of course pocket the other half like they have been doing with the salary money the last two years.....), they are still say 20 million plus 12.5 million (32.5 million!) short of spending money on salary that they should. That is pretty characteristic of what they usually do, and the team is left with 2,3, and 4 years of mediocre starting arms.
  7. Great article! Pythagoras and the Twins. teflon twins and pythagoras. pythagoras and teflon twins. I like how it all projects! Well, kind of, in the sense that it is not a 60 win season. I enjoyed the read a lot. I am increasingly amazed that it is erroneously stated that the twins "uncharacteristically spent a real chunk of money in the off season". The payroll, as it stands right now, is virtually the same as last year. They didn't actually spend a real chunk of money! Have they really fooled so many astute observers? If they would have taken the payroll up to 100 million or more, THEN they would have brought the payroll up to where it should be. If they would have raised the payroll to what is has been before, without additional chunk of MLB TV money, and up to around 110 million........ THEN they would have uncharacteristically spent a real chunk of money in the off season. As it is, Terry Ryan has loaded the pitching staff with high hopes, and dreams with potential. The smoke screen is in effect, and apparently working for the front office. Now it may happen, that is true. And the team may hit. That is true, too. But let it stop, please, let it stop........ this dogma that the Twins have spent a real chunk of money.
  8. Shouldn't one always boo all Yankees? Just as a matter of principle? Should Jeter be singled out and not be booed?
  9. 28. "Mike Pelfrey: when discussing the American vs National leagues differences and the DH vs pitcher, he said "Sometimes the pitcher is the hardest guy to face". ......... and this is the guy that should be a mentor to the younger starters????
  10. K rates are rising across baseball......... except for the Twins pitching staff. A respectable rate for the hurlers would be a welcome change.
  11. Very interesting! Thanks for the great work and gifs.
  12. Arroyo brings his demand down for a 1 yr deal with a mutual option for a second and he is signed right away. At 38, it is time to bet on yourself year to year and get paid what you deserve year by year. A player should only want to be paid for the work they do, and not sitting around injured. Bet on yourself, and earn the highest money you can year by year.
  13. Great article, Seth. I am convinced that Pelfrey means well, and wants to do better.... way better......... than he did last season. In fact, what he says about it reminds me eerily of Matt Capps' return - wanting to come back and show the team and the fans he is better than he had regressed to, and feeling a lot of guilt. Just because with Capps that was pure hope and no performance doesn't mean Pefrey's return will be the same. When thinking about how the Twins are such great guys and it is such a great place to play (and for the last three years, lose and play), the story makes me think of a high school age young person that has had their parents divorce, and now has two homes. At that age, the child can pretty much pick and chose who they will live with, and they gravitate toward the household that lets them get away with more, that is less demanding, that has less consequences for not performing well. Having a great clubhouse led by Gardenhire may have had it's time and be in the past, as well as picking a team without utilizing the sabermatics that are now available. Time will tell if this feel good story results in more fun....... like winning.
  14. I Keep hearing how Ryan spent money...... but the payroll is virtually the same. He has just replaced the money that went off the books. To me, that is not really spending money, even though many would like to think so.
  15. I think you are spot on about that. I also don't think anyone else would have given Nolasco any where close to what he got, and as it is shaking out, appears to be way more than the market.
  16. Everyone is entitled to their own predictions. I really wouldn't be surprised to see the Twins lose 90 again, especially if the pitchers that Ryan signed continue to perform like they have instead of how they all hope to. I predict just the opposite for Joe Mauer. I think he will finally put on his big boy pants and use his size and strength. By having fresher and stronger legs under him from playing first base, he will start hitting the ball about 10 to 15 feet farther, and have an OPS above 1.000, hit 30 to 40 homers, and become a well rounded hitter that can use his "perfect stroke" to hit it out instead of collecting another double. I just think he can evolve, and surprise everyone as he starts his second career at first.
  17. Isn't the current payroll pretty close to last years? The pitcher signings make it appear that they have spent money, but they have mostly just rearranged what was pretty much the same amount.
  18. Buxton got all the love on the unveiling show of the the top 50, and "stands apart" at #1 of all prospects. Sano gets a little talk, and drops one spot to #4 overall, and Meyer at 28 and Stewart at #40 basically get their names read as others get the air time love. Rosario is out of the top 100, and Berrios comes in at 90.
  19. I would take Loshe and Garza "issues" over Gardenhire and Ryan/Smith 'issues' any day. The issues may be created by the management of them. But then, I like individuals and spirit over uniform and vanilla.
  20. While starting pitching was addressed, it was addressed by not adding a single top tier pitcher. The 2014 season is built on hopes and dreams, which is about what the last two seasons comprised of. Watching the Twins fade dramatically to end both seasons, it solidifies that hopes and dreams have a hard time making it all the way to the end of the 6 month season.
  21. Tim Raines, the guy that was outed by Ken Burns in his documentary for admitting he wouldn't slide on his butt, but always head first because he kept his cocaine filled glass vials in his back pocket? Maybe cocaine is less performance enhancing than roids or HGH, and is really not something to keep a guy out of the HOF for. Personally, I could never vote for Bonds or Clemens. I could see the HOF creating a category for the fallen..... which would include those that would have been a lock except for the PED's or gambling.... and make them a part of the history. Shoeless Joe, Bonds, Clemens, Pete Rose, etc. I think it would make for a true representation of the sport and the culture, and the education of the coming generations on how easy it is to go down the path of shame instead of fame.
  22. Very passionate opinions on both sides of the decision. Fans were so passionate it made for visceral reactions from those that were once more forced to have a manager and general manager for their beloved team that they were convinced needed replaced for any positive future for their team. Most on the losing side of that decision are still having trouble understanding how this could happen to their team of childhood dreams. I got sick just reading about it again. Definitely the number one story. Here's to hoping the Twins overcome.
  23. Both Pelfrey and Nolasco have sabermetric stats that say they should be better than they actually performed/perform. I would take the stats saying they would be worse, but they perform better, instead. In a heartbeat. Coming back and pitching after TJ surgery so quickly will only impress me if they actually perform well. The first two months would have been just as well served in rehab, than pitching that poorly. I believe it takes just as much guts to be smart, and not hurt your team, as it does to play and hurt your team. Many players are dishonest about their injuries these days, and it does not help the team at all. Mostly it hurts the team.
  24. And we had JJ Hardy. Stephen Drew would be a waste of future resources. But Florimon is not the answer either.
