  1. Anyone who has ever spent a lot of time around baseball know that signs get stolen. Tim can go on forever how they taped the coaches and de-coded the signs, that's really not the point here. The Astros went above and beyond this.
  2. What are the payroll concerns? This deal didn't put them in outrageous territory. With all the money that came off the books, everyone was looking to where the Twins were going to spend their money....this is it. Donalson in 2019 vs NL pitching: .259/.379/.521/127 OPS+ Donaldson in 2017/18 vs AL pitch: .262/.375/.525/139 OPS+ Yes, he did get injured in 2018 and yes he is a little older, but worried about switching leagues vs pitching should mean little to nothing when it comes to hitters. Age. Comparing to Mauer just isn't the standard. I love Joe more than almost anyone, but his years at catcher, combined with the injuries made him a shell of his former self at age 33. Not only did Donaldson have an above average year with the glove, he was also above career averages across the board with the bat. While using Joe at the same age can provide some foreshadowing on aging, using only him and no one else is pretty short sighted. While I am a little concerned on how he will age, and years 3 and 4 he might not produce up to his salary......I love the signing.
  3. 1. Arraez 2. Polanco 3. Donaldson 4. Cruz 5. Kepler 6. Sano 7. Rosario 8. Garver 9. Buxton Good Lord.
  4. We will just have to agree to disagree. Taking down banners IMO does nothing. It puts a black mark on the game and provides zero punishment to the players who were actively involved.
  5. I mean....Beltran is the only player that could be named because he is no longer part of the player's union, so his name sticks out like a sore thumb. There could have been a group of players who were instrumental in the whole thing but it won't come out because of just that. It's a tough spot to be in for sure.
  6. That doesn't only effect the players union though. There are thousands of players and employees in the Houston franchise that had nothing to do with this. You are effecting so many people doing something rash like that. Not to mention, the league isn't going to hurt itself. Doing something like this is a great way to push fans away from your sport/league. Manfred and commissioner's office works for the league and the owners of the league, not the other way around.
  7. That's an assumption. He very well could have. He very well might not have known a damn thing.
  8. IMO how do you punish players without hard evidence of who it helped and who it didn't? You cannot just suspend everyone, that turns into a witch hunt. You can go by word of mouth of who said what, but that's a pretty slippery slope when it comes to punishment, especially as harsh punishment as some people in here are suggesting. Are you going to suspend everyone who put on a jersey because they didn't report it and immediate put their own career and future in jeopardy? It's easy to yell right now at the players from the sidelines. In the end the commish works for the owners. He gave the biggest monetary fee allowed by the constitution and threw down a pretty big penalty for the first ever punishment of this kind. While I agree, it's kinda sad to see the player's get off scott free.....I really don't know what would be appropriate, or what you could possibly do.
  9. The X factor here is the 2017 Astros team was REALLY good to begin with. It's not like they were an average talented team who needed cheating to win. Postseason stats in 2017: Alex Bregman: Road – .154 BA, .508 OPS; Home – .273 BA, .857 OPS. Carlos Correa: Road – .211 BA, .626 OPS; Home – .371 BA, 1.164 OPS. Jose Altuve: Road – .143 BA, .497 OPS; Home – .472 BA, 1.541 OPS. Brian McCann: Road – .037 BA, .198 OPS; Home – .300 BA, .849 OPS. Evan Gattis: Road – .200 BA, .533 OPS; Home – .300 BA, 1.014 OPS.
  10. What does stripping them of the title do? Absolutely nothing. It takes down a banner? It puts a "vacated" in the record books? Everyone knows who won, they watched the games. The players played in the games. It's just semantics at that point. I hate how the NCAA vacates titles. I feel it's much more a punishment for the fan base than it is to the players of the franchise themselves personally.
  11. How? When facing a guy with a great off-speed pitch it gives such advantage, especially in a 0-2 or 1-2 count to know what's coming. You aren't guessing anymore. If you know it's a fastball, you can sit back and take a good cut at it. If you know it's off speed you can adjust, especially if it's a hanger. This is why when a pitcher is tipping his pitches he tends to get lit up. Now imagine you don't even have to look for that, the info is just given to you.
  12. I just don't see how it's advantageous having him in long relief or an occasional spot starter when he could be starting on normal rest in Rochester. If the Twins plan on him being a long term rotation asset, let him start to get use to it now. Send him out there every 5 days. He's thrown less than 70 innings above A ball. Unless he comes out in ST and just wows everyone, I don't see the point in trying to rush him up to the MLB rotation.
  13. What excited me most about this extension is there is a good chance we haven't even seen Sano reach his peak yet. Gives him some peace of mind to focus on his game and not have that uncertainty of future earnings on his mind. I am really hoping they can come to an agreement with Berrios now.
  14. I'll ask the obvious question, why? Having Wade or Cave as a 4th or 5th OF seems great, but would you want either full-time over Eddie?
  15. You are comparing 4+ year 100M dollar deals to 1 year contracts. Quite the apples and oranges comparison there. Also, since when is Cruz not a top tier talent? That's news to me...and probably to the Twins too.
  16. This has nothing to do with Avila or the perceived notion of the FO being "cheap". Castro struggled mightily down the stretch and went and found a place where he will get more playing time than he would here, good for him.
  17. I would have to imagine he will be starting in Anaheim and was looking for a more solid role with Garver emerging as the more often than not starter. Not to mention Castro's bat fell off a cliff in the 2nd half. 2nd half numbers: .191/.333/.299. .632 OPS. 3 HR, 6 RBI and 49 K in 97 AB.
  18. “I can’t put a number or where a guy is or what that means, but we’re going to target impact pitching,” Twins CBO Derek Falvey said. “What that looks like? I can’t predict that today, just because I don’t know how exactly the market’s going to play out through the course of the winter. But I can tell you it’s highly likely that we’re going to spend a lot of time focused on: ‘How do we acquire on that side of the ball?'” There is more to the quote as well that he mentions free agents and the trade front. Since when does targeting mean.....we will for sure sign one of the top 5 free agent pitchers or consider ourselves failures?
  19. So the only scenario where the FO could succeed this off-season was to sign one of a small handful of big name free agent starting pitchers? I would hope that the line between failing and succeeding would be a broader scope and include at least a few more options than that.
  20. An excellent hitting first baseman. He is subpar with the glove to put it lightly. He's a stick and has 50 HR potential and would be a great addition to an already excellent lineup.
  21. Unless Kirilloff makes some strides with the bat, he isn't ready for the big leagues. He posted a pretty par for the course OPS in AA. The potential is there, but I would hardly doubt he's ready to take on a starting position on a playoff caliber team..
  22. I would take Perkins over Liriano for the decade. He did have a nice 2010, but Perkins had a dominant 5 year stretch where he was one of the game's best.
  23. Yeah, I'm not sure where this idea that I have seen floated around more than a few times came from. What evidence anywhere tells people that Arraez could just step into 3B and be better than at his primary position.....which isn't that great at anyways?
  24. How would signing Hill tell you that at all? Who knows when and if the guy will be ready to pitch. The timeline of July or midseason is pretty cloudy. It's a low risk lottery ticket where if he comes back strong it will look like an insanely intelligent signing. If he has complications, or comes back and looks done, they will be out $3M.
  25. No, it hasn't. At Bailey's age there is little reason to give him more than 1 year. If he has a pretty great year and puts up 3+ WAR, it's looking like a damn good signing for a 34 year old.....and you go from there. An option would have been nice, but nothing wrong with a 1 year deal here.
