  1. I can find zero anywhere about any wrist injury, is this true?
  2. Very true, he's an interesting case study because of that TJ surgery though. At age 27, he isn't exactly ancient. For him to turn the corner he is going to need to miss some more bats because 5.4 K/9 is pretty putrid.
  3. I've behind the wheel of the Gibson bus for awhile. Year 3 after TJ surgery, 1st year he went 150 combined innings and got his first taste of ML action. His sophomore year he improved across the board, including K/9, BB/9 and HR/9 but wore down in mid-August and September where his control waivered and he got harder than the rest of the season. I really think we see a better Gibson this year than last year.
  4. Why the Butler comparison? I am just curious. Vargas has much, much raw power than Billy does. Besides being slow and a liability of defense I don't see much Butler in Vargas's game. I'll say .265/.340/.475 with 28 HR.
  5. 1. Whoever mentioned a straight release is insane. It benefits the Twins zero and Santana 100%. He is going to get paid $55M regardless if he pitches for the Twins or not, why in the heck would they pay him and not let him pitch? 2. May has pitched a total of 10 innings this Spring, his longest outing being 33 pitches. The staff has come out and said he isn't stretched out enough. Adding Pelfrey to the rotation right now does not ensure he gets 36 starts this year. Why would they insert May, let him throw 50-70-90 pitches and dilute the bullpen right off the bat when he can be doing that in Rochester? It makes zero sense. I'd love to see Meyer but it's pretty evident his control needs to improve. He walked 7 in 5.2 spring innings including 4 in his last start. What's the benefit of running him out there right away? What's the real harm in letting him start a few AAA games at least? 3. Is every thread on this board going to turn into a front office bashing session? I really hope not. The season starts in 2 days and there is already a post labeled: Disarray, Disappointment and Doom. I love this board but when every, even slightly positive post is bashed into the ground by 4-5 negative posters, man it's going to be tough to keep coming back every day.
  6. If May isn't stretched out enough to get the spot over Milone, what made any of you think they would change their tune now?
  7. Besides the fact he would more than likely cost a ton, what's not to like? The early TJ surgery is a concern, but in 3 years since then: ERAs of 3.16, 3.00, 314. FIP's of: 2.83, 3.21, 2.94 and K/9 of 11.1, 9.4 and 10.1. He is a 26 year old bonefide ace.
  8. Did you see Willingham+Arcia? Hunter is much quicker than Willingham ever was. What's the timeline for Nick Burdi? Any chance that Sano and Buxton both start the season in Rochester?
  9. And at right now Dozier and his agent would laugh at such a deal.
  10. How about nearly 70 extra base hits, 89 walks, and 20 stolen bases. The average is a little low but let's not let that alone define him as a hitter. He was 3rd in the MLB for 2nd basemen in offensive WAR last year even with that .242 average. He was a quality player at the plate last year, especially for the position he plays.
  11. That makes no sense. Their defense in road games was split in roughly 20 different stadiums. Half of the defensive innings that were seen in Target Field this year were by the Twins. If they Twins had say....the Royals defense this past season, Target Field might still be looking like a pitcher's park.
  12. To get rid of Nolasco at this point the Twins would probably have to throw in cash after the season he had. He pitched well after he came off the DL. If he can jump back to his form the season before the Twins signed him he certainly has value. Pelfrey very well could be a lost cause or maybe they try him in the bullpen and they find a useful arm and a trade deadline piece when one of the young guns are ready. Johan turned 25 a month before the season started in which he won 20 games, so not quite by age 24. He also was pitching in A ball at the age of 19 or 2+ years before Meyer would even be drafted. Not all players mature at the same path and for May last year is when he realistically should have debuted. Comparing anyone to Santana really isn't fair though.
  13. I wonder how much the offensive park facrors went up because the Twins abysmal defense played half the innings at Target Field this season.
  14. The Twins need to decide how they veiw Dozier. It seems pretty split here on TD whether he is a replaceable cog or a long term starter. Looking at statistics in 2014 Dozier was 3rd in batting WAR of all 2B in the league and 6th in total WAR for 2B. He will turn 28 next season and has gradually gotten better in both each of the last 2 seasons. The downside to not giving him an extension now is another 2014 season where he puts up between 4-5 WAR and his price tag more than likely goes up a couple million per season. The upside is if he falls back to being a 2 WAR player the team would have saved money long term. IMO...sign him. Middle infielders who can hit for power are a rare commodity. Only Neil Walker and Iam Desmond (Tulo would have as well) hit for as many HR as Dozier did last year, and that's not taking into account the amount of time he walks. For where the Twins are at right now I think it would be foolish to sell him off for prospects. The real question is....what is he worth?
  15. The same 33 year old Sam Fuld the Twins got for free who seemingly had a career year at the plate AND in the field? The Twins getting a pitcher the age and talent that Millone is for Fuld is quite remarkable if you ask me.
  16. Johan had also never pitched above A ball when the Twins took him in the Rule V, not IV draft. He also pitched more out of the pen for 4 seasons than he did as a starter before making the jump. He wouldn't be the first pitcher to get his feet wet in the pen before jumping to the rotation.
  17. Interesting questions fellas! I do think a Hicks/Schafer platoon would be beneficial. If Hicks can play an average, or above-average CF hitting in the 9 spot in the order, what would he have to hit for the members of this board not to have his head on a platter after a month? Hicks hitting 9th in this order is a lot less of a burden than him hitting leadoff two seasons ago. Would .235/.360/.350 do it? If Meyer doesn't win a spot in the rotation I would also much like to see him in the bullpen rather than starting in AAA, especially if he will be on an innings count again this year. As for leading the team in HR, I gotta go with Arcia. I think it's his breakout year and I will go with 36 HR.
  18. I don't think the Twins can or will match their defense, but it's not the way the team is built either. The Twins scored almost 80 more runs than the Royals did last year, and that certainly could improve this upcoming season as well. The defense certainly needs to improve, but it will never be what KC has.
  19. The music reminds of the background music during the "create a player" function on any sports related video game I've ever played.
  20. Your post just made it seem like they passed on Santana for Pelfrey....which they were very different decisions. I also and I think the majority of Twins fans wished they wouldn't have signed Pelfrey the minute it was announced, but to make it seem like they could have had one or the other.....I guess I just don't look at it like that. What has changed IMO is they are a step closer to competing. They hit on Hughes, Gibson pitched decent in what was essentially his rookie yeat, Correia and his contract are gone and they stocked the system with power arms from the last draft.....not to mention they also have a compensatory pick to go along with the pick they gave up for Santana.
  21. Meh....Pelfrey was signed in December to a 2 year 11M contact. Santana was low-balled late in the off-season and wanted 4 years 50+M plus losing a draft pick, it's really not pick one or the other situation.
  22. Last year they low balled him and hoped he would sign. This year I think the Twins think they are in a better place than they were last year (I agree) and were willing to pay market price and give up the pick to have Santana on the team. I would say this move wasn't out of desperation at all.
  23. To be fair Hicks, Santana, Vargas and even Arcia were all promoted pretty aggressively. Yes, the Twins were and have been patient with some pitching, but they have been fairly aggressive with their offensive players. It's fun to create a trade market for Willingham and rip the Twins for not trading him and for that matter Burton and Fien too. The only player who had a lot of interest was Perkins at the deadline.
  24. Oh I was in no way saying Santana is or was a better pitcher than Shields, cause that's just not true at all. I didn't mean to compare K/9 rates either. Just stating at age 31 and 32 Shields rate is dropping which is never a good sign in veterans. I would have rather seen a 3 year with a 4th year option for Santana as well. A 5 year deal for Shields just makes me cringe a bit.
  25. I would say that Bourjos is a better CF than Presley. Also when you are throwing out an outfield with Torii Hunter and Oswaldo Arcia and not to mention the powerful Vargas DH'ing.....give me a defense first CF and hit him 9 in the lineup.
