  1. Pre-leg injury, why would that have been surprising? Catchers/1Bs are pretty much never fast. Even if a SS doesn't have the range to stick and has to be sent to 3B instead, you'd still expect some speed, and certainly more than a C/1B. And at ten years younger too. We don't have post-leg injury stats, but I'd be pretty shocked if Sano's sprint speed didn't take a tumble. Mauer just pretty much is what he is at this point, speed-wise.
  2. I’m glad to hear that both sides are open to it, and I’d love to see an extension happen, but 5/30 like the comps seems light on both dollars and years. I’d push for at least a couple more years on that deal. Get a few seasons post team control.
  3. That was a good article. I was little meh on the signing when it happened but I like the human side of things and will enjoy watching Rodney pitch more now.
  4. I knew the whole "advanced analytics" thing was just bunk. Batting average forever!
  5. Well that's literally impossible. 4 strikeouts is minimum 12 pitches, leaving only 4 more for his count of 16. 3 innings is 9 batters, so 5 more batters after the 4 strikeouts. He couldn't have gotten 5 batters out in 4 pitches. Unless... wait, is this one of them newfangled "advanced analytics" things?
  6. "Cold weather guy"? Really?
  7. Funny, I'm reading Vargas Llosa's Feast of the Goat right now, and I keep thinking how it would have been helpful to have had this background when reading Junot Diaz. Oscar Wao is probably my favorite, but I hav a soft spot in my heart for This is How You Lose Her, recommended to me by a woman that I did, in fact, lose. Oh well. Time heals and all that. So how about that Brent Rooker, huh?
  8. Fangraphs chat with Kiley McDaniel yesterday: https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/kiley-mcdaniel-chat-1-31-18/ A little skeptical of Rooker; Graterol definitely picking up steam. May be of interest given our relative lack of system catching. Also a shout-out to Mauer.
  9. I'm glad he is. His career hasn't turned out exactly how we wanted it so far, but he has a pretty good ERA in the high minors, and he's still very young. Selfishly for our team, he's not taking a 40-man spot, and he can be stashed in the high minors all this year without any roster impact. You keep a guy like that around.
  10. Various college football related message boards, including a couple reporters on the Texas A&M beat are suggesting that Kohl Stewart is looking to head back to football. You may recall he was a Texas A&M commit before he signed with the Twins. I'm a little skeptical, given that the last add/drop day at A&M is apparently today or tomorrow. Anyway, a lot of smoke on Twitter and elsewhere, but not much in the way of solid news.
  11. I mean, they absolutely are. https://www.minorleagueball.com/2017/10/24/16537288/minnesota-twins-top-20-prospects-for-2018 A- vs. A-/B+. #1 vs. #2. Floor vs. Ceiling. Yeah, they're comparable, especially when you consider immediate needs. In fact, I'll bet I could find you some teams that would want Gordon even when their evaluations lead them to believe that Lewis is better, simply because they can plug Gordon into the lineup pretty much now. Fine if you like Lewis better; I mean, I guess I do too, but it's close. But "not even remotely comparable"? That's hyperbolic.
  12. I just don't agree, and I'm happy to see Baddoo and Wade above him, not in the least because it recognizes the fact that Wade has proved it at his high level (AA), and Baddoo significantly outperformed Kiriloff at the same level (Elizabethton). Kiriloff has proven nothing at all, doing pretty decently in only a partial season in the rookie league and then missing a year. By the way, Baddoo's OPS was 1.057 at E-town. Kiriloff managed an only decent .794. Aside from that, Kiriloff - to me, and feel free to disagree - has Todd Marinovich written all over him. According to my cloudy crystal ball, he'll be amazing as a high school prospect, good as a minor leaguer, will probably make the big leagues, but won't amount to anything there. (Later drug addiction is optional but not recommended.) I am extremely skeptical of prospects with parents who are both high-level coaches and helicopters. Where's the projectability longer term? In any case, I hope to be wrong about Kiriloff, but not about Wade or Baddoo.
  13. Nice! I’m pretty excited about this move. Maybe the ice cold stove is heating up.
  14. I’ve been in Latin America for more than a year now. I can write up my experiences with Mexican and Panamanian baseball if anyone wants, but I won’t hijack someone else’s thread to do it.
  15. Put very "eloquently." That's how I remember myself on draft day too. With just a short amount of hindsight, however, I have really come around to Royce Lewis and Brent Rooker, who were both pushed very hard very early, and have responded quite well. Also, by the time they got to Blayne Enlow, I was reconsidering. I agree with beckmt that he could be a real gem, and we were lucky to be able to snag him, albeit way overslot, with such a low draft pick.
  16. It's an allegation that has to be taken seriously and investigated thoroughly. If true, it's massively disappointing, and it needs to be dealt with very seriously by the team. I'm withholding final judgment until all of the facts are out and the truth is known. But this is also a reminder of why the people involved in this sport that we love are so much more important than the numbers that represent them, including Ws and Ls.
  17. Also seems that the Palka and Dereck Rodriguez losses haven't hit his radar yet. And no word on Yunior Severino, which I'm pretty damn curious about.
  18. He put Royce Lewis's ETA at 2019? Damn, that'd be quick. I wouldn't complain if it actually happened, but that seems super accelerated.
  19. On the other hand, “Ohtani Kitaen” is brilliant.
  20. I so very much hope that the GMs of the other teams think like you do.
  21. I really want to know what happened with Jake Mauer. That is shocking to me.
  22. If I were a young shortstop, I'd probably look at Lewis, Gordon, Javier, and Palacios; then take a quick gander at the nobody that the Angels have in their system; then I'd probably pick the Angels too. Though given the Twins' depth and the Angels' propensity for trading prospects for fading veterans, he'll probably be wearing a different uniform by the time he hits the majors anyway.
