  1. Did Bert just call Ricky Nolasco a bust?
  2. Burdi only struck out one guy though. I think we should cut him.
  3. Not really. FIP is to what should have happened as ERA is to what happened. There are no assumptions in swing %, just the question of whether a player did or did not swing. There are massive assumptions in FIP and WAR, as to what kinds of things fielders "should" be capable of, and what a hypothetical "replacement" player "should" be capable of. They're completely apples and oranges.
  4. I think there's a big difference between the "That's the Ticket" series, since they contain write-ups of the upcoming series, and I often find them to be interesting content that's completely related the site. In other words, it's a tie-in that makes perfect sense. The Twins just made their Twitter account available to the highest-bidding ambulance chaser. I'd say that's night and day.
  5. I think it's more about comparative advantage. Let's assume for the sake of argument that while Escobar is "good," Santana is "very good" at shortstop. I've seen Santana be competent at center, and with his speed, I might even call him "good." Escobar would be flat "bad" at center field given what we've seen of him elsewhere in the OF. So the question is whether you'd rather have the best glove at shortstop and damn the rest of the positions, or if you'd rather your shortstop-center combo be "good" and "very good" versus the alternative of "very good" and "bad." Personally, I'm fine with the way the lineup is right now. Things will probably change in September, and then probably change again next year, so there isn't much of a reason to get all in a twist about who's actually the best if it means getting both bats in the lineup with at least good defense at both positions.
  6. A lot of people never notice the Astros.
  7. I spent some time poking around the list, and it was surprising how well Plouffe performed compared to, well, the vast majority of draftees. Sometimes I get so caught up in potential or lower-minors performance that it's easy to forget how hard the game is. Besides, it kind of looks like there were more 1st round draft picks than players better than Plouffe so far. So even if he were the last pick in the 1st round, it'd still be reasonable to pick him.
  8. Well, the first round anyway.
  9. Brad Swanson. It'll be MS Paint, not Photoshop, but you know we'll still laugh.
  10. Is anyone else surprised by Plouffe? Also, the fact that Escobar is ahead of Jeter amuses me greatly.
  11. I think this is great, and I don't particularly care where in the outfield he plays. I just want him to see some "crafty veteran" type pitchers. Some guys who rely on the type of breaking stuff that seemed to me to make Hicks look like a statute at the plate in the majors. I think Hicks actually does have something to learn in AAA, and if he can continue to show good plate discipline while putting solid contact on pitchers with good arsenals, he could finally be a viable option for 2015. Two years later than we initially thought would be better than never. Good move.
  12. 13 runs and Joe Mauer still doesn't have any RBIs??? Grumblegrumblegrumble.
  13. It's usually aliens. Speaking of, the Twins have now scored 10 runs.
  14. I misplaced the time too, I think. I went to the bathroom, and, being the airport, that meant packing up all of my crap and carting it all the way down the terminal and all the way back. When I got back we were winning. Maybe I'm bad luck.
  15. Whatever. His name is Diane. I have an Aunt Diane.
  16. A few more hits with guys on third would be great.
  17. It's a bar inside an airport. Once I hit the third beer, I'll be at $400 when you include the tip.
  18. That is one big dude...
  19. So by the time I'm landing in Montreal, I'll be able to catch the bottom of the ninth. Not bad.
  20. Flying to Montreal. It isn't a delay or anything. I volunteered to give up my seat in an "oversold" situation, which is a very airline-ish euphemism. Would you believe that they gave me an $800 voucher to go seven hours later? They're paying me to go.
  21. What happened with the Vargas RBI? Btw, I'm just joining the game. Coming to you from an airport bar where I'll probably be for the next six hours...
  22. I think this is overall a great plan, but I do take issue with this one part. Hicks may be killing it in AA, but go compare his numbers in AA now to what his numbers in AA were two years ago, when his major league status was made inevitable by the Span and Revere trades. They're more or less the same; or at least, I don't find a 24 year old OPSing .876 to be any more impressive than a 22 year old OPSing 844 in the same league. I'd like to see Hicks finish the year in the minors and demonstrate competence against AAA pitching for at least the first month or two next year before he comes back to the majors, hopefully for good. Meantime, I'd keep Santana in center field, and I'd keep Escobar at short.
