  1. Still don't understand why Butch Davis was let go. Wasn't he in charge of the OFs? Wasn't our OF defense one of our few strengths? If anyone has some ideas on the subject and could enlighten me I would appreciate it.
  2. True. I always wondered how Rod Carew would be as a hitting coach. Carew: "After you get your hit run to that base over there", (pointing to 1B). Prospects: *looking puzzled* Carew: "We'll go over this again tomorrow".
  3. Thanks for posting that video. Of course it's a fluff piece to a certain extent, but I really was drawn in by the talk of the pitching specialist. It was also at that age that Hunter began working with Alan Jaeger, a pitching coach widely considered a pioneer of arm health and velocity development. Also, he seems unusually focused for a teenager. Very interesting.
  4. Terry Ryan over-extended himself by spending on starting pitching that had almost no chance of paying off. That is so very well said. Santiago is a mystery. After going 6-0 in July with a 1.33 WHIP (too high) and 8.7 SO/9 (very good) he was traded to the Twins and the change in scenery was terrible for him. He bounced back with good numbers in September, but his peripherals are not encouraging. His peripherals have never been encouraging. Difficult to measure a guy who has almost always outperformed his peripherals. No idea what we have until he takes the mound. I find that a little unsettling.
  5. I completely see your reasoning, but I agree with Brock above where he mentions having Mauer or Grossman 'holding back' a speedster on the basepaths. It hurt seeing Buxton lose out on a triple last year because Vargas couldn't get to home plate from first on the hit. Mauer has excellent instincts on the basepaths, but I don't like him in front of anyone who can really tear around the bases.
  6. I suppose if one of Rosario, Buxton or Kepler is injured we could see Stubbs coming in as a regular OF. We really don’t have anyone other than Palka that is close and he is no guarantee. Maybe Granite. That would be fun. As far as this line of ‘we need a veteran presence’, it worked for Terry Ryan so Falvey and Levine decided they’d use it, too. It stands for, ‘we didn’t sign anyone who would be very good because those guys are expensive, but look who was still available in February!’
  7. You see 0 Warning Points under your name? Why do we all see 174 Warning Points under your name? If you really had 0 Warning Points you wouldn't even see a Warning Points field.
  8. Great story, Ncgo4. Causes me to remember what a great guy Killebrew was, too. Thanks for sharing.
  9. I've been saying 70-75 wins (a HUGE improvement), so I'll take the under.
  10. I think this is a good take. I suspect Adrianza will have a position over Santana unless DanSan shows something to make the FO believe that the last two years were an aberration. Otherwise it's difficult for me to poke holes in this comment.
  11. After absolutely raking in July, Vargas started exactly none of the five games in August against LH starting pitchers. When they played the Braves and Vargas came up to bat against a LH relief pitcher (O'Flaherty) the Braves intentionally walked him. Molitor set Vargas up to lose. I don't trust the guy.
  12. I think this is the third thread where I've noticed Mike Sixel saying 'Garver is already 26 year old, how long do you want to keep him down'? I agree, but I still think believe that the guy, unless he shows MLB caliber presence with the bat and the pitchers, should start in AAA. He has caught in only 60 games above high A ball. As Brock said, start with JRM. If he fails, give Garver a shot. Gimenez's 'veteran presence' can be useful in AAA.
  13. I don't remember Alyea, but I remember Glenn Williams. That Australian played 3B for us and hit .425/.452/.450 (.902) for us in 2005 in 43 PA. Not a very long career, but damn fine stats to retire with!
  14. Japan and Korea have many pitchers with top shelf breaking balls. What they don't have is many guys who throw mid-to-high 90's FB with movement. In the USA we call those guys Yu Darvish and we pay them lots of money and then giggle because we got such a bargain.
  15. Lewis Thorpe is really a mystery. It will be fun to see what he does this year. I don't really get the Daniel Palka bandwagon. From what I've read he is not going to hit MLB pitching. I wish him all the best, but I am surprised you have him higher than Shaggy, who I am a big believer in. Of course if we all had the same opinions this website would be silly. Thank for the write-up!
  16. IIRC he and Silva pitched one of the fastest game of the season one summer day. I like guys who work fast. A great competitor. Congratulations to Mark.
  17. Arcia regularly hit >.300 in MiLB and had an OPS of >.800. Surprisingly ineffective in MLB. Very disappointing.
  18. That was splendid! Thank you. Um, Alex Kirilloff is real though, isn't he?
  19. Shouldn’t Keaton Steele have to post a WHIP <1.3 or SO/9 >6.0 before he moves from A+ to AA? And I certainly wouldn’t let Randy Rosario or Felix Jorge stand in the way of a promising starting pitcher like Romero. Not to throw shade, but I wouldn’t let Kohl Stewart stand in the way of Romero, either. I get that Romero is not a lock, but he's the best SP prospect we have right now.
  20. Rosario's splits RH/LH are not nearly as glaring as Kepler's. EDIT: for clarification: OPS vs RH/LH Rosario....... .738/.724 Kepler......... .783/.590
  21. You should write children's books.
  22. Excellent write-up. Thank you. If Romero becomes a true #1 it changes everything. It makes the SP success of one of Berrios, Duffey or Jay to make this team one FA SP away from true contention. I like those odds.
  23. As far 'pace of play'... From the Chicago Tribune: But the fastest game in professional baseball history was three years earlier, on Aug. 30, 1916, in Asheville, N.C., between the Asheville Tourists and the Winston-Salem Twins. "It was one of the last games of the 1916 Class D regular season, and the Twins had a three o'clock train to catch out of Asheville," according to a CBSsports.com story. "The problem? The game was scheduled to start at 2 o'clock." So the two teams agreed to start more than a half-hour early and to play as quickly as possible, the pitchers lobbed the ball and the batters swung at the first pitch. Time of the game: 31 minutes. The game ended before it was officially scheduled to begin. Twins won 2-1. Sources: Baseball-reference.com, CBSsports.com
  24. RiverBrian needs to stay focused? Um,yeah. Good luck with that.
