  1. Chris Gimenez is bringing his .602 OPS from last year to be a backup 1B? Mauer can do better than that even if he only faced LH pitchers. DanSan? I am not finding many of their moves what I would call 'inspiring'.
  2. I'm holding out hope that the reason they signed Breslow was largely to see what his 'analytic' approach produces for him. If positive they may work it into the development of some of the other pitchers. I doubt this is the first time Falvey or Levine have been intrigued by pitching mechanics.
  3. I'm with you except for Boshers. Too little data to be sure that last year was a fluke. SIERA, FIP and xFIP suggest it wasn't. And I agree that Haley could go. This team is trying to determine who they should keep from one of the worst pitching staffs of 2016. Some team out there is likely going to DFA someone who is better than some of the players we have. If we are watching carefully we may find a couple of them to help our team. I'll be very curious to see what our new FO does here.
  4. I can't remember the last time I heard or read QED used properly. And couched in sarcasm, to boot. You're a star!
  5. Any changes to player development is going to take a little time. I expected more changes in the organization right away, but we should have anticipated that if these guys are really good and have the team's long term well-being in mind that they would work to fully grasp what the Twins have before they start changing everything. I don't want to wait. I've been watching this sh*t for 6 years. But a long term organization build that results in a competitive baseball year after year is a wiser approach. Good luck guys.
  6. And we like Mauer for other reasons, too.
  7. That was polite of you not to bold the whole thing right up to the last line. And I'm certainly not going to burn any goodwill I have on this board to defend that 'scout'. We believe in our young squad. He doesn't. I'm betting on the Twins. Not in April, but in the next year or so.
  8. Far too much of the article was true. Annoying. I looked up Suzuki & Castro stats trying to find out what this guy was talking about (stolen bases?). Couldn't find a thing. So, the catcher part is as far off as I thought it was. The pitcher part is too close to the truth. Kepler & Rosario both need to pick it up offensively to show they are real, significant MLB outfielders. Neither inspires fear in the hearts of our opponents at this point. Sucks, but this is the team we have for now.
  9. April 19, 1983.
  10. If Mauer is batting clean-up against LH pitchers Molitor should be fired by tax day.
  11. I think if Mauer has his AB against LHP severely limited and he can retain his lofty BB% he has a good chance at: 400 AB, .275 BA, .375 OBP, .390 SLG (.765). 12 - 18 doubles, 5 - 8 home runs. And a triple. Mauer should hit a triple.
  12. This is the issue I have with Tonkin as a long relief guy. He's not one. If you go to his game logs for 2016 here we see that the vast majority of issues he had were when pitching >1.0 innings. He is a 1 inning pitcher. Is he effective enough in that role to deserve a roster spot? I don't know, but keeping him as a mop-up guy is an inappropriate allocation of resources.
  13. That is a staggeringly discouraging stat, Willlihammer. In fact, had the Twins given up 162 fewer runs, 1 run per game, they would have tied the Angels for 19th place. Wow. I am hoping we have more people on base this year when home runs are hit. It would be helpful if our K% (6th) changed places with our W% (13th) but I don't see our free-swinging players doing that. Maybe a step or two in the right direction. The pitching needs to be much better before this team is at all competitive. I am sticking with my under as to the 74.5 wins for the Twins this year.
  14. That was so mean. And so sadly true.
  15. I am not a scout. I am just a baseball fan. Would someone please help me understand why Justin Haley is potentially an important part of our future? I'm serious here. If he had his exact history with the Twins would anyone think he was going to get picked up if we sent him down? (I know he would go back to Boston) Would anybody get upset about it? I see nothing in his stats that suggest a soon-to-blossom 26 yo MLB starter. Looking for any insight other than, "He must stay on the team because we selected him in the Rule 5 draft". Thank you in advance.
  16. I've been poised to post something as soon as the Twins add the the 1 run Sano got them. I'm tired of poising.
  17. Interesting idea. I'll sit back and watch others take a shot at it, though.
  18. I really liked the comments here in a Bleacher Reports interview with Commissioner of Baseball Rob Manfred. The highlight for me was this comment: Everything we're doing, everything we're doing, is focused on making sure that we pass the game on to the next generation.
  19. Yeah, middle relievers drive me crazy. Based on FIP, xFIP, WHIP and SIERA our two best bullpen arms last year were May and Boshers. Now Buddy is getting beat up this spring. I would think he has to perform to make the team. He doesn't have the track record Pressly has established.
  20. Like anyone else who saw his stats at the time, I was pretty excited by Thorpe in 2014 when he was pitching well in A ball in spite of being nearly 4 years younger than the competition. Then he's gone for 2 years... Good to remember that he is only 21 years old. Cautiously optimistic.
  21. At 19 years old I was not the wisest of young men, but I cannot imagine I would have thought buying 10 cars sounded like a really good idea. It makes me wonder if such excess is indicative of potential issues. I imagine his career will have a lot to do with how quickly he matures. I would wish him good luck if he didn't play for the White Sox. (HT to Bat-Girl)
  22. Congratulations to Joe Nathan. What a great career. Selected for SIX All-Star teams. Highly regarded in MLB. There is no chance he is going to be part of the next Twins winning season. At 42 years old he has reached that point that most players reach far before he did. Hopefully he and his family find something fun to do. I very much doubt it is going to include him being a team member of any baseball roster.
  23. I like that lineup, too. Not sure how I feel about replacing the 6' 5" Mauer at first base with the 5' 11" Dozier, though.
  24. Well, I said above that I wouldn't offer an extension to any pitchers. Ryan Pressly has been pretty exceptional. I just never really think of extensions for middle inning relievers. Interesting thought, though...
  25. I would wait to extend Buxton and/or Sano until they had a productive year that made it look like they absolutely belonged in MLB. It will cost more at that point, but they aren't going to sign now for peanuts anyway. Might as well wait until you have a better idea of the players they are going to be. There is no pitcher on the Twins roster that I would offer an extension to at this time. If you were to extend Dozier it should include a lump sum 'moving fee' if he is traded, rather than a no-trade clause. Three years sounds pretty safe, though his agent may not think it's a good idea.
