  1. I agree that Mauer's value is greatest when he is behind the plate. I expect that he is working on framing as part of his effort to be the best that he can be. At least I hope so. One thing that is interesting to me is that the Molina brothers are 5'11", 5'11" and 6'0". Hank Conger, rated #1 for framing so far this year, is 6'1". Lucroy, who they also chat up, is 6'0". Is it more difficult for a tall man, such as Mauer, to make those borderline pitches look like strikes?
  2. Notice anything weird about that photo? It does look surprisingly like the grip for a knuckleball. Wow. Great article.
  3. Perhaps it is more difficult to change leagues than I thought. Hmmm... It will likely be years before we know how these trades worked out. Too bad for Ben. He had just started successfully gathering a lot of Phillies phans into his corner after a terrible start.
  4. I am frequently frustrated to read comments where people want a huge upgrade at SS. As if there are many a Tulo out there waiting for a job. We are getting surprisingly good D out of our MI. At least I, for one, am pleased with the defense we are getting from out middle infielders. And, at the beginning of the year I believed that Escobar would be replacing Floriman at some point. No more. His hitting, while not stellar, has come across as better than I had dared hope, too. Florimon rocks! I feel that we have an excellent SS for the next several years in Pedro.
  5. Over the last few years the fans have clamoured for Vavra to be let go and finally Terry Ryan made it a reality after the 2012 season. So what did that change do for the Twins? The team is hitting worse than ever and yet I have not heard a single utterance of getting rid of Brunansky. So why is no one complaining about the job that Bruno is doing as the hitting coach for a team that claims that they are only interested in results? It seems like a pretty fair number of Twins players have left the Twins and gone on to hit better for other teams. (Hunter, Bartlett, Ramos, Cuddyer at age 34?) Is Bruno perfect? No. Is he better than Vavra? I'm willing to give him some rope to play with. This is only year one.
  6. I appreciate the rating of offense (9) and defensive (2) being the same as offensive (2) and defense (9). Your pitching staff, however, does not. This can be a really big deal to a group of players most of whom have a screw loose already. (this coming from a former catcher)
  7. Perkins offers us something we really appreciate right now; an excellent chance to win games we lead going into the ninth inning. Detroit has some horrible numbers from their bullpen. No wonder they might pay heavily for Perkins. The downside is that Perkins then plays for the Tigers. I know many feel the closer role is overrated. However, how bad would our record be without Glen? With Perkins embracing available wisdom from the likes of Maddux and the study of SABR stats, etc., he is clearly committed to improving. He could be really good for a long time. Another team would have to make us an offer we couldn't refuse.
  8. A sobering point and one we need to keep in mind. Sano and Buxton, along with Rosario, have many Twins fans excited. Me, too. Still, they are a long way from MLB. Patience, fans, patience.
  9. Great breakdown. Thank you. 2004 was the toughest for me. The Twins scored runs. Plenty of them. It was probably not as frustrating for me as it was for Joe Nathan.
  10. Wow, a 17 year old SS? Youngest player on the list. Hmmm...
  11. Glen Perkins for Matthew Summers Of all these interesting ideas, this was the worst. It was your way-offiest. Fun stuff to think about.
  12. I don't have a problem with Chuck. He was a very good player for the Twins. When he left we got a lot for him. Then he became a Yankee, so as far as I'm concerned he is dead.
  13. Wow, looking to get flamed? I have no problem with it. I believe that both will be up fairly soon. I suspect you about to hear from some who disagree. Peace to you, huhguy.
  14. celebratory Nickleback? Oddly enough, I enjoyed the rest of this, this, whatever you call it.
  15. Interesting article Brad. Good for you. Personally, I wouldn't cheer for the Yankees if they were playing Al Qaeda.
  16. Surprisingly, there are 9 teams with a lower winning % than the Twins. I doubt we'll get him on waivers. I was skeptical when I started reading this article, but his AAA numbers are quite impressive. Who would you send down?
  17. Great article. Thank you TFFA. It's great to have you there. Good for us! He's not striking out at a higher rate than he did at High-A. This is really good news. Surprising, even. What I find most surprising is how few of his pitches are near the knees. Pitchers are coached to keep the ball down as children. Very odd.
  18. dakotanative said it well. Congratulations. And from one who enjoys this website almost every day, thank you.
  19. Where did all the comments go? This was a fun thread and I wanted to follow up & see what others had said. No one knows. Damn NSA.
  20. Great attitude! If you have real passion then you sometimes get frustrated with your team. That was a fun game, especially for Arcia & Thomas. Go Twins!
  21. One thing I really like about this idea, Supfin99, is that you are not talking about pitchers. Seems such a low percentage of those long term pitcher signings turn out well. Long term contracts for position players can be risky, no doubt. However... Morneau at $80 million for 2008-2013 was an excellent signing until the concussion. Likely many GMs were jealous when they read that. Mauer's 4 year, $33 million contract was an excellent sign by the Twins. If I am following your post correctly, you would have encouraged that early Mauer signing to be a 10 year contract (through 2016) rather than a 4 year offer. That could certainly have saved some real money.
  22. Shane - the first post was so good and then you had to make it all a lie by posting again. You were so close... Agree with Shane. I appreciate the frustration, huhguy, but Arcia is dealing with the best pitchers on the planet right now for the first time in his life. He will be fine. In fact, I think he will be excellent.
  23. I like the aggressiveness of this thread, but I believe that it is too soon. He has star potential, no question. There is still too much that can go wrong. Attitude is part of it. If I was really inclined to ink someone to a deal like this it would be the more humble Buxton. I don't want this to occur as racist (nationalist?), but here are my thoughts: Buxton seems like the All-American kid. His humility along with his work ethic and overall attitude make a more attractive package to me. Sano cannot be as good as he is by accident. I'm sure he works hard. Still, I really think Buxton is the safer bet.
  24. I just thought you were funny. And strange. This was nice. Now I think you're funny and real. And strange.
