  1. Will second the above comments, Seth. With Enlow (#11), Sands (#13) and Strotman (#15), the top 10 is going to be one heck of a group. Especially considering that two of them were recently added to the 40-man. I understand that us fans aren't always patient, especially after a year like 2021. But the FO is doing exactly what they were brought in to do, ie, build a pitching pipeline. And we need to remember that doing so takes time. None of us want to fast forward and wish away 2022, especially us old guys, but I have a feeling that the Twins pitching come 2023 is going to be better than good. And a big part of it will be home grown and young!
  2. Thanks, Nick, love this series. Count me among those who love Arraez and what he brings to the Twins. My question, does his playing left field increase the wear on his knees? Would he have less, or more, knee problems if he stayed in the infield and as DH part of the time? I guess not seeing him pitch at all last year and the risk, in my eyes, of more serious elbow problems would have Duran lower on this list. Or perhaps not even on it. Hope I am wrong. AS for Larnach, I just don't know what to expect. The start to his big league career was so exciting, until it wasn't.
  3. None of us know what the FO is thinking as they prepare for 2022. Have they had discussions with Team X and will pull the plug on an Odorizzi type trade after the lockout ends? Are they near an agreement with Pineda that will be signed at that time? Do they have reports that Maeda's recovery is ahead of schedule and he could/should be back by July 4th? Add Pineda and a solid Odorizzi level starter together with the young guns and you have the making of a decent rotation. Are they planning on piggy backing young arms for a couple spots in the rotation? Considering the innings most of the kids threw last year, that could make sense. So many posts, including this one, blame the Twins FO for doing little prior to the lockout. It seems many of you think they went out for dinner or drinking in early November and failed to get back to work prior to December. I doubt that was the case. The truth is that we don't know what their plan is, although likely have one. Not doing what most of us would like, isn't necessarily a failure.
  4. Want to second and thank Dman for his comments. Especially, his thanking Buxton for the stance he took during these long negotiations. Will disagree with your comments a bit, Cody. I think the chances of a career altering or ending injury is no greater for Buxton than any other player. Yes, his history indicates he is more likely to get short-term injuries than most, but career ending seems to be the same as anyone else, at least in my eyes.
  5. Very interesting group, Seth. Perhaps even exciting! Agree that catching is so important and like all three of these kids. Will be interesting to see if you have any other catchers included between #16 and #1? (Rortvedt has enough big league time to not be included in this analysis, right?) Have liked Soularie since he was drafted and will be looking to follow him closely this summer. Perhaps the biggest question with Severino is whether or not he has done a good job of investing his $4.5M. That is what he got if you combine what Atlanta paid him with the amount he signed with the Twins? To be honest, I don't recall Severino doing as well last summer as his numbers indicate, especially at Cedar Rapids. Should be interesting to see if he gets thru the Rule 5, I would think so, assuming there is a draft when baseball gets going again. Thanks for this series, Seth.
  6. Thanks, Seth. Considering these five were 16-20, really looking forward to the next group(s). Will agree with the above comments that I just don't know what to expect from Vallimont. Excited for the young trio, knowing they are a long way off. Have my fingers crossed that Moran is the real deal and he confirms that with his play in 2022.
  7. Love that four of these five are pitchers, pitchers with very high ceilings. Will second what saviking said.
  8. Watched a lot of Winder's games at Wichita on MiLB tv last summer. The pitcher I saw was as good or better than any of the other Twins high prospect. Yes, Balazovic had that five game run where he was nearly perfect, but over the course of the summer Winder was the better of the two at Wichita. Loved seeing this piece. My only comment would be that like a few above, I see him developing into a better pitcher than a #3. To be honest, I cringe when I see anyone telling us the ceiling of any player as those results are up to the player becoming the best he can be, or not.
  9. Interesting how the headline is about the Twins lineup, yet their best overall hitter and guy with the highest average don't get a mention...Polanco and Arraez. Assume a couple of these guys will perform better than last year and couple about the same and a couple will disappoint. Not a clue who will do what. The good news is that the lineup should be strong. Its those guys throwing off the mound that will decide what type of year it is.
  10. The most interesting point is the 4.0 gpa from Rice. Isn't Rice one of the top engineering and tech schools in the country? Was so very excited about what he was doing last year, and equally disappointed when he was shut down. Can anyone tell me if elbow tendinitis is a precursor for TJ surgery? Hope like heck it isn't, because this young man could be the best of the best of this crop of young guns approaching Target Field.
  11. Thanks, Nick. Looks like you had nice seats in KC, win or lose is a great city to visit. What are your thoughts on the timing of when they get serious? Will they sit down to serious negotiations before February? What is your estimate on a new CBA before the opening of spring training? Opening Day? I put it at 25% probable for spring training and 50/50 for opening day.
  12. Thanks. Good example of why it takes years to determine the outcome of some trades. This one could be very good for the Twins, but it may take seven or eight years to know.
  13. Great comments about Celestino. My memory has a gap, he arrived in one of those 2019 deadline trades, didn’t he? Which was it?
  14. Very interesting. Perhaps the best grade overall was the fact eight young prospects got their feet wet and offer encouragement for the future (didn't include Gordon or Barnes in that group). We can all quibble with grading, however, believe your grades for both Rortvedt and Celestino were too low. Neither should have been in MLB before late last year at the earliest, thus, we should have expected their bats to be quiet. Considering that only Kirilloff was the only one who was a Top 5 prospect (Larnach wasn't top 5 last year, was he?), 2022 and beyond should be exciting for Twins fans.
  15. Will always remember going to that spring training game with my son and his friend who were both in their early teens. Was puzzling when it was announced that Kirby was a scratch. Little did we know that the game we saw the day before was his last. His career, like his life, ended way too early.
  16. Thanks for the update, Cody. If the Twins are going to be competitive, they will need a strong pen. On the surface, this group could be that, especially if they find the next Wisler from among that 'on the farm' group. Still would like to see them go out and sign someone good, knowing that someone good last year might be not so good this year. But in the end, a lot is going to depend on Rogers' finger, Alcala taking that final step and Moran's changeup. Should all three of those results be positive, the pen could be very good. Have been as big a fan of Thorpe as you will find on this site. But after the last two years, his star is tarnished in my eyes. Would love for him to show up in spring training and be that better than average starter he appeared destined to become back when he was 17 or 18. Perhaps the best return for the Twins would be if they got some value from him together with another prospect in an Odorizzi like trade.
  17. Love your last comment about Dobber. Have been saying that since last summer. Gotta believe that he will be very solid, assuming the Twins put him in the starting rotation in spring training and don't mess around like last spring.
  18. Interesting group, Seth. Considering these are your 21-25 ranked pitchers means they are probably somewhere in the top 40 overall....very interesting. Gore and Cano are two great stories. Both are older, yet, could help the Twins pen by the end of the year. That's assuming there is a 2022 season.
  19. Couldn't watch the Twins, Doc, so I got the MiLB package. Watched a lot of the Wind Surge games, especially when both Winder and Balazovic were starting. Must say that when Balazovic was in his stretch of what was it, five games, without allowing a run he looked like what you expect an ACE to look like. Then for whatever reason he seemed to lose his command a bit and wasn't as dominant. While there, Winder was nearly as dominant as Balazovic at his best for the entire time he was there. So I can see either developing into that long sought after ACE, knowing there aren't any guarantees that either will.
  20. Agree with everything you said, Doc. Would add that after seeing lots of his starts at Wichita, I would rank Winder as the top pitching prospect.
  21. Add me to the growing list of those who cringe every time I read the comment, "Minnesota has a surplus of corner outfielders." Yet, the more I think about it, you are technically correct. There is a surplus of corner outfielders, however, other than Kepler, Larnach and Kirilloff all have lots of tarnish on their star or are far away from being major league ready.. And many of you will debate whether Kepler should or shouldn't remain with the Twins. Add the fact that Kirilloff is headed to first base and you have Larnach as the only top level prospect who is close. I don't know about the rest of you, but I hope we never again see Arraez, who I see as a tremendous asset for the Twins, or Rooker in left field again. Should Rooker's bat return to what it was pre-broken wrist, let him be the primary DH.
  22. Two thoughts, Seth, as I read about Palacios. First was your using the word 'fantastic' when describing his defense. Is he really that good defensively? He can't be the next Ozzie Smith, but is he Simmons good? My second thought went back to the Odorizzi trade. I really hope the FO has been working on another deal that would bring in someone solid like Odor in exchange for say a mid-teen prospect...not Noah Miller, but around there. Thanks, Seth.
  23. Five interesting and different prospects, Seth. Expect it would be a big win if one of this group actually makes it. And probably is a crapshoot as to which of the five it would be. Looking forward to future articles as the prospects become more familiar.
  24. Great article, Nick, thanks. I understand the FO bristling at comments that they are entering a 'rebuild' period. At least to me, rebuild would indicate a longer period of cutting back to young kids with an eye on competing three, four or five years down the road. I understand and agree that isn't and shouldn't be the case for the Twins. Yet, that doesn't mean that 2022 won't be an off year. But do they also have information leading them to believe that the 2022 season is going to either not exist or be significantly affected by the lockout/pending strike? If so, it would be smart to focus on 2023 and beyond. If baseball does have a shutdown for part/all of 2022, the minor leagues will keep playing...right? I am not certain, but would all the 40-man roster guys also be shut down? But several of those prospects listed above aren't on the 40-man and would keep playing this summer. That would put the Twins in much better shape to fill a significant part of their rotation with some of these young arms come 2023 with guys like Canterino, Varland and SWR having a full 2022 season behind them.
  25. Great series coming, Seth, thanks. Must say that I had never heard of two of the young kids while knowing a bit about Valdez. Must disagree a bit with one of your comments, ie, that Duran struggled. Those numbers look awfully good to me for a 18-year old kid who missed all of last year after signing in 2019. You indicated that he should see lots of playing time next year in the FCL. With all the bloody changes in teams and leagues, I assume you believe he will return to the same league he played in this year, the Florida Complex League. You don't think he will move up to the Mussels, in whatever the Florida State League is now called? Seems exciting that both Helman and Bechtold are on track to making it, even though it is likely to be as utility guys. Like how the Twins are getting Bechtold behind the plate so he might become a better version of La Tortuga. Also like your comment that Helman played in all four outfield spots. Now that's a valuable tool for this young man. Thanks for this series, Seth, and have a wonderful Christmas.
