  1. I sure hope they talked to his agent to make sure he's willing to sign...
  2. I'm guessing Correa took under slot money. I still go with Buxton.
  3. Well, he did have that good inning... Maybe somebody is sending a message:).
  4. I betcha he forces Gardy to put him in no later than Wednesday - he's on a mission to prove to the fans here that he's not injury prone and tough enough to play through minor ailments.
  5. He did so-so - 2 hits and 1 walk in 2.1 innings, no K's, low strike/ball ratio. Let's hope he was still getting back into gameshape and this is not indicative of what's to come.
  6. Span is in CF, Plouffe is LF.
  7. Will he take slot? Or will he want the extra mil that comes with going #1 overall? If he won't take slot, I would look seriously at Zunino or Gausman.
  8. So for all those who think we should give him a shot, how much should we pay him? He made $2M with Kansas City last year; do we offer him a low 7-figure 1-year deal? Do we offer league minimum? Will he sign for that? Just curious as to how much we should gamble on him. Who knows? Sometimes the longshot horse does come in.
  9. I'm sure he wanted a major league deal when he left Kansas City last year, but nobody offered him one, Minnesota included. His AAA numbers are not all that interesting. If those are the choices, I say pass.
  10. Maybe sign him to a minor league deal, let him pitch in Rochester, see if he has anything or not... maybe... his numbers in AAA this year are borderline and don't give me a lot of confidence. He was not very effective with Kansas City last year.
  11. The best part about this is this is a debate that we can relive over and over for the next 3 years, as we watch how the #2 pick (whoever it is) develops and as we watch how the other options fare on their journey to the bigs.
  12. Thank you! This is the point I've been trying to make and why I think you take Buxton if he's available.
  13. NOBODY is a safe bet - not Buxton, and not a college pitcher. No matter who they pick, you're taking a risk. The risk with a high school outfielder as that he never becomes more than a career minor-leaguer. The risk with a college pitcher is he blows out his elbow the first year he's in your organization (sound familiar?). You weigh that against the potential reward. Everybody will balance those differently, but the consensus top prospect nationwide is Buxton. Whether he's top of the Twins thinking, we'll find out.
  14. If he's available, you take Buxton. The upside is to much to pass on, and right now, to be blunt, while we have a number of OF prospects, this year they have been somewhat underwhelming. Benson is mired in AA after slumping miserably in Rochester, Hicks is showing promise but is not lighting up the league in AA and has been advancing slowly, and Arcia is looking good at high A, but it is still uncertain he will fully mature like the Twins hope. If we can get a better bet on an OF prospect, I say take it, especially if people are right and Span is trade-bait.
  15. I like Plouffe's defense (although he did have a gaff today), but he still has to show he belongs with his bat. Yes, he can hit for power and he can drive the ball, but he doesn't do it consistently. If a pitcher makes a mistake, he can tee it up; but if a pitcher hits his spots and forces Plouffe to adjust, he hasn't figured that out yet. You can't have a 3B who hits below .200. This is still the weakest position in our lineup, and none of our players on the farm inspire me (I'm assuming Sano moves to a different position). I guess my sentimental side hopes Burroughs puts his game together in Rochester (he's doing OK down there right now) and play a role in the future, but I would say that the solution the problem is not currently in the system.
  16. OK, it's been six starts now. None of them have been bad, and some have been quite good (I put today in that category). He is easily the top starter on the staff right now. You would think opposition scouts have had enough time now to put together info on him for their clubs. Time to ask the question: Is he for real? Have we found a gem in the rough? Or is this still beginner's luck? Is an implosion coming?
  17. He pitched 2 innings today - 1 hit, 3 K's. Just a start, but a good one.
  18. I think what is confusing about the minor league portion of the rule 5 draft is that it does seem to operate differently than the major league portion. In the major league portion, if you take a player, they don't have to just stay on the 40-man of the new club, they have to stay on the 25-man of the new club or get offered back. The corresponding analogy in the AAA portion would be if you take a player AA or lower, they should have to stay on the AAA active (25-man) roster the whole season, not just the reserve roster (which, I believe, can hold 38 names). Similarly, in the AA portion, you would think they had to stay on the AA active (25-man) roster, not just the reserve (37 man). If you can take a player in the minor league phase and just stick them on the reserve roster, it does operate differently than the major league phase.
  19. I was responding to Mr. Ed who thought they would promote him at the All-Star break, in which case he wouldn't be there for the 2nd half anyway. Arcia is a prospect that should be cultivated and is ready to play at a higher level; Dolenc is expendable, especially given the number of OF prospects they have.
  20. Per league official websites: P Bruce Pugh has been promoted to New Britain from Fort Myers P Daniel Sattler has been assigned to Fort Myers (he was signed last week from independent St. Paul Saints) Per Twins website: P Daryl Thompson (AAA) and P Brad Thompson (AA) have been released.
  21. Might as well promote Arcia now - Miracle out of it for playoff contention.
  22. One thing also to add to Rosterman's excellent summary. Being removed from the 40-man and sent to the minors ("outrighted") can only be done to a player against his will once during a career. If a player on the 40-man has already been outrighted once, and he does not give consent to go to the minors again, he can ask to be traded or released and become a free agent.
  23. But is the situation really that desperate? Granted, starting pitching sucks on a historical level, but if one or two things go right that can bounce back quicker than people are thinking in a year or two. If either Diamond or Walters turns out to be a for-real back-end starter, if Gibson recovers well from TJ surgery (which happens more and more all the time), if we pick up 1 or 2 decent arms via free agency, the rotation is no longer a disaster - not where we'd like it, granted, but not a disaster. And notice - over the last 22 games, the Twins are 11-11 - 500 ball. Are we going to contend this year? No. But I'm not assuming that 100 losses is a given. 90, probably, but not 100.
  24. The cynic and the realist in me says that "winning championships" is not the goal, at least not the true goal. The goal is to make money; baseball is a business, first and foremost. To do that, you need fans in the seats and ratings on TV. To get those, you have to win 40-45% of your games and you have to have players people like to watch. Purists will be happy to see the team blown up for the hope we can contend in 2015. The average fan isn't willing to wait that long for the Twins to be interesting. There has to be a balance between building for the future and putting a competitive team on the field today.
  25. Be careful... there are some on this site who will flame you just for thinking ill of Slama.
