  1. My understanding is, yes, anyone being removed from the 40-man has to go through waivers. If they are not claimed, they can be outrighted to the minors (assuming they are not 5-year veterans or have given consent), traded, or released. That was done to prevent clubs from stockpiling talent that is major league quality (at least theoretically) in their minor league system - it gives good players who belong in the majors the chance to actually be there, if not with their current team than with someone else. Same with the option system - to prevent stockpiling talent.
  2. They've been at 39 for some time now - since April I think. My understanding is that some teams like to keep a slot open in case something comes up on waivers or trade. It does mean, though, that they can't move Waldrop to the 60-day DL as you can only do that if your 40-man is full and you actually need the space for someone else.
  3. Plus, Guerra and Oliveros are already on the 40-man. Slama would need to be added to it.
  4. If I were the GM, I don't know that I could do anything other than what's been tried. His problems aren't mechanical; something's going on in his head that is crossing wires up. He doesn't seem to be able to pitch through adversity and shake it off when a couple of people get on base. One or two bad pitches snowball all too easily into crooked number innings. The Twins have been very patient with him. Maybe someday his head will pop on straight and he'll fulfill his potential, but I don't know that the Twins (or any other team) has a magic potion to make that happen. The one thing left I would try (and he would need to agree to this, both for contractual reasons and for emotional reasons) is send him to Rochester and let him get regular starts and see if he can find his confidence. He hasn't pitched in the minors since his recovery from Tommy John surgery.
  5. I'm not sure the Twins had a better option, at least not at Triple-A. Hendriks did have his shot, and butchered it. Just because he's doing well at a lower level doesn't mean he's fixed those things that caused him problems at the bigs before. Let's not jump immediately to the insanity of trying the same thing and expecting a different result. Hendriks will hopefully be ready later this year, but let's not rush his return. As far as DeVries, I was not in favor of his being called up (I wanted to give Duensing a shot this year; I still do, last night notwithstanding), but as long as he's here, he needs to get a fair opportunity, which to me means 4-5 starts minimum. Baseball ability is not meant to be evaluated on single game performances. Now that he's here, give him 3 weeks, and we can reassess then.
  6. Is there a market for him? He's got a $14M/year contract through 2013 and has lost a lot of games to injury in the past few years - most to concussion symptoms.
  7. Agreed, an average start, but about the best we could hope for, and (believe it or not) it still lowered the Twins' starters ERA on the season. If he gets some better defense and a little more timely hitting, he might win a few games this year.
  8. And then, to take Hendrik's spot in Rochester, they can bring up Hermsen who has been going gangbusters for New Britain - 5 solid starts in a row, 2.83 ERA, 0.97 WHIP
  9. I realize this is a touchy subject, but you asked, so: Standardize whether or not the DH is used. My personal preference is to get rid of it, but I understand the practical difficulty in that, so I'll accept everybody using it - just everybody use the same rules. I know some like the diversity between the leagues and the effect it has on interleague play and world series, but I'm not sold on that. I'm also ready, especially if my above proposal is rejected, to scrap interleague play - keep it in the leagues, play a balanced or semi-balanced schedule, and only have the leagues meet in the Series. OK, OK, I'll admit, I'm a traditionalist. I'm not big on the wild card thing either.
  10. Didn't you see the movie Moneyball? "It's incredibly hard."
  11. I don't think the problem is the Twins ballpark being too much a pitchers park. It's just that we don't have a good enough lineup. Other teams hit here just fine. Oh, and if this was such a pitchers park, what does that say about our pitching, with a rotation as bad as it is...
  12. And lo and behold, both websites have now been updated. Welcome back, Chris!
  13. I know this may be a bit picky, but isn't this game 43, not 42?
  14. That was my assumption too, and I agree the most likely answer is both websites are incorrect. I was just surprised the website wasn't accurate, and seeing two that were inaccurate for so long raised the question in my mind.
  15. As per the Midwest League website, Rory Rhodes has been sent back to EST and Nate Roberts has come off the DL.
  16. When he's pitching it's his mound. As long as it's within the rules, let him do what he wants. My guess is the anal-retentive people at MLB aren't too thrilled with it either, but they probably don't want to look bad by telling him to stop.
  17. Does someone know for sure if Parmelee is still on the 40-man roster or not? Originally he was optioned, which normally means he stays on the 40-man. The Twins website, however, does not have him on there and hasn't for some time. In addition, the Rochester webpage lists him on their roster but also says he is not on the 40-man. At first I thought it was a glitch, but it's been over a week.
  18. I've been wondering about that myself. Clearly, the Twins aren't really concerned about getting him back of the DL. They probably don't know what to do with him when he is ready. He sure won't be with the big club, given how their bullpen has done. Maybe they can stretch him out to be a starter; they're going to need plenty to finish the season:).
  19. While the sentamentalist in me also hopes he does well, the practicalist agrees he's probably going to get lit up. There's a reason he was undrafted - he doesn't have big-league stuff. You can get away with mistakes in the minors what you can't get away with in the bigs. He looks like a journeyman AAA roster filler. No shame in that, but that's just being realistic. In a season where there was any hope, this move isn't made.
  20. Is this a sign of the times? The Twins have an 8 run lead, and I'm nervous and just hoping they can hold it!
  21. Well, that didn't take too long. Could be a long night for Walters
  22. Nothing but best wishes for DeVries, and I hope for his sake (and the Twins!) that he does well. That being said, I still think the best answer would be to give Duensing another shot. He is doing much better against RHB this year, and if he can get over that issue permanently he can be a decent 3-4 starter for a few years to come. In this rotation that could be huge.
  23. According to Wikipedia (take it for what it's worth) he gets his money whether he accepts reassignment or asks to be released. If he is picked up by another team and signs a contract with them, the Twins are responsible for making up the difference between his new contract and his old one. Nice to be a veteran!
  24. Do you really think he'd accept going to Rochester? He can turn it down, as a 5-year veteran, can't he? If he is indeed better in the NL, and is "condemned" to AAA again, why not try to sign a minor league contract with a NL team? Better chance to get back up that way.
  25. I don't see DeVries as building for the future; there is no upside. If this season is a total wash, then why not put Duensing back in the rotation? Help him figure out what his problem is against righties (which has developed over the last couple of years) and, if that can be accomplished (which will take giving him innings) you might have a decent back-of-rotation starter for a few years.
