  1. It may not have been Walters call - if it was a last minute thing that came up pregame, they might have decided to try it and see if it would be OK. The fact that Gardy came out so quickly tells me he probably had heads up there was a potential problem. The option is to throw Manship out there for an emergency start anyway, so you haven't lost that much (other than the 6-run first inning, of course.)
  2. They activated Liddle instead - he was on the DL.
  3. I've got the video of his triple he hit while a Twin - I still watch it; it's a classic.
  4. That would be my guess - they had Manship up pretty quickly, as if they'd told him ahead of time to be ready. They must have seen something during pregame warmup that had them concerned.
  5. I was at the game last night, and Blackburn struggled again - he was lucky to get through 5 and get a win (which shows how useless that statistic actually is). Unfortunately, that has been his tendency the last couple of years. So what do we do about him? Here's a radical idea that I admit up front probably has no chance of happening, but it got me thinking. Let's send him down to Rochester. I know he's making big bucks, but so is Nishi and look where he is (deservedly). And this is the last chance the Twins will have to do it - next year Blackburn will have over 5 years of service time and can't be sent to the minors without his consent. As I understand it, he does still have an option year remaining, so he wouldn't have to go through waivers. And we do still have Hendriks who can come up (and DeVries for that matter) to take his place. I just can't help but wonder if Blackburn has gotten too comfortable and used to being up here. Does he still truly appreciate what a privilege it is to play in the majors, even for a team like the Twins? Maybe he needs a good few months of bus trips and sub-par facilities to regain his motivation to make sure he is worthy of a spot on the roster. And it wouldn't be a bad message for others on the roster - perform or else; poor play will not be tolerated. Just a thought. Go ahead and flame me. I'll even bring the marshmallows:)
  6. It does make it more complicated. Odds are he would clear waivers again, but if he is out of options, then to be sent down would require his consent. In the end, that may be why they brought up Parmelee - since he's already on the 40-man and already using an option year this year, it requires far less jiggering on the roster than the other possibilities.
  7. If he is called up again, he would need to be added to the 40-man roster. If sent back down after that, then (assuming he has no options left) yes, you have to clear waivers again.
  8. Parmelee, who started with the club playing regularly (with Morneau DHing) and was sent down (justifiably) to Rochester, was recalled on June 8th. Since then he has started one game, was a substitute in one more, and sat on the bench the last two. My question is, why is he back up here? Did we bring him up because he had a hot bat? Then why isn't he batting? It raises the question of what exactly the Twins see his future with the club being. If he is seen as a backup to Morneau in case of injury or a return of concussion symptoms, then doesn't it make more sense to keep him in Rochester where he can play every day and keep himself sharp? Or do we see him merely as a backup, never being more than a spare bat? Is Morneau then our long-term plan for 1B? Is it Mauer? Do they even know what role they want Parmelee to play? I'm left with the conclusion that his numbers in AAA forced a recall, even if they weren't sure what they were going to do with him, and that sounds like a problem for both the Twins and Parmelee. Thoughts?
  9. I agree that, unless we get offered a solid starting pitcher ready to go now (not a "prospect"), we keep Span. Revere is ready for center, but we need someone in left & right too. Our OF prospects are stuck right now and there is no guarantee they will get to the point they are ready to play everyday in the show. It's all fine and good to say we should trade our veterans for prospects, but let's not trade everybody. Prospects don't always pan out, and if all we have are prospects and some don't work, we'll be in the same boat 3 years from now - with half a team and no idea how to fill out the rest. Not to mention that there was to be somebody marketable to sell tickets, which is not by any means an unimportant consideration.
  10. Your points are well taken, and I am sort of curious as to why they made the moves they did. That being said, it's not as if any of these were serious prospects who are being held back from their shot at the show.
  11. My guess is some people don't like him because he's getting paid to do the same thing most of us do on this chatboard for nothing - give his opinion on the Twins:)
  12. I was wondering about that myself, and I do think he has earned it, but my guess is they promote Hirschfeld, who has also pitched very well in AA and already was used for a spot start in Rochester last week.
  13. On the telecast Bert called it a rookie mistake.
  14. I think that's the same thing Soucheray was talking about in a column recently, hoping the club wouldn't go down that road again. Then again, I don't agree with Soucheray often, so... I think if you're 4 games under .500 or less, and within 8 games of the division leader, you don't sell. At that point with 2 months left I figure you can make up realistically about 1 game/week on the leader over that whole time. I wouldn't necessarily buy unless we were above .500 and within 4 games of the lead. I know there are some who will say just seeking to win the division is not good enough and we should stock up on prospects in the hopes of a world series run in a few years and forget about the division, but I am not one of those. I'd love to win the series again, to be sure, but I don't think that's realistic under any scenario given the size of our media market and the importance local TV contracts now plays in total revenue.
  15. It was meant seriously - I was noting that over the last few weeks they've lowered their starting ERA from 6.60+ to under 6.00 - that's a good accomplishment and shows a rotation that is starting to put out competitive starts. Naturally, I'd like the trend to continue - let's get it under 5.00 if we can.
  16. Be curious to see what the corresponding move is on Hendriks. Gray DFA?
  17. Reading the news, looks like Francis signed with Colorado, his former club, yesterday. And started the same day. And got shelled (10 hits, 8 runs, 1 BB, 1K, 3.1 innings). Not a good start to a comeback...
  18. I said on another thread that Diamond is the one pitcher we have who could be legitimately considered, but Willingham has actually earned his place this year (I think he'll get picked even if by some fluke Mauer gets voted in), and being up here the whole year tips the scales in his direction.
  19. Isn't Slama on the DL right now? I'm guessing they would go with Guerra.
  20. Good points. At some point, though, they'll need a fifth starter again. At that time I think you'd have to make a move - Swarzak or Manship making spot starts (I'm assuming Pavano will be out a while), Duensing moving to a long relief role, making an opening for a set-up guy. The other thought is that, while today's laugher was fun to watch and the Twins bats have been waking up, I'm still remembering earlier in the season when runs were at a premium and we were in a lot of close games. If we revert back to that at all, it won't be mop-up duty but innings that really matter. Do we still have confidence Gray can handle those?
  21. Depends on how the starting pitching holds up - the last couple of weeks they've done fairly well. They've lowered their collective starting ERA to 5.99
  22. I was one of those saying he should have a chance - I believe when you are doing well you stay up as long as performance justifies. But he has now had 3 sub-par performances in his last 4 appearances. I would check with Rochester and see if either Guerra or Oliveros are ready. If yes, I'd make the change.
  23. Who would you bring up? I would guess it'd be Guerra.
  24. Ouch! Double-slammed and tag-teamed:)
