  1. Hey, I keep hearing that since we're going nowhere this year anyway, this is the year to experiment and try things and see what works. We know that Swarzak is not effective as a starter this year, DeVries was only marginally effective at best, we saw tonight that Manship is struggling right now. So who's left? Why not give Duensing another shot? It's not as if we are endangering a playoff run. If it doesn't work, have we really lost anything?
  2. To supplement the previous replies, the long-term hope of MLB is take make the rule 4 draft (amateurs) global, but that has to be negotiated in the terms of the CBA. My guess is the whole thing with a limited signing pool is a transition to that , and it will be taken up when the next CBA is negotiated, before the 2017 season.
  3. I'm going to give the Twins the benefit of the doubt on Mauer. We don't know just how his leg is progressing. He played with the injury the second half of Sunday's game, and he could barely run by the time they took him out. What good is it having him swing the bat if he can only jog to first? He got booed because he was unable to leg out a double; he get's booed if he's not in the lineup. Kind of a no-win situation for him.
  4. I've wanted to give him another chance all season.
  5. Jose Berrios was the Twins second pick this year, in the compensatory round. High school pitcher out of Puerto Rico.
  6. I think it is the same thing - LEN3 said the Twins knew about the problem before they drafted him, so it doesn't sound like it's anything new they've found. He could get "treated" and assigned quickly, if the shoulder is in good shape.
  7. He signed for slot - $1.227M
  8. My guess is they'll keep him around - they're stuck with his salary unless some team wants to trade for him, and while he wasn't the middle infielder we thought we were getting, it sounds like he's making progress. All it takes is one or two injuries (Dozier, Caroll, Casilla, etc) and he might be back in the picture.
  9. According to LEN3, Bard signed for slot. He'll go to Fort Myers to have his shoulder treated before being assigned to a club.
  10. He certainly pitched well enough the first six innings. My only gripe is why didn't they have somebody ready to come in at the start of the seventh, just in case? I would have pulled him at the first sign of trouble - he's never gone this deep in a game this year, and when he tires, he tires quickly.
  11. I tell you, I am REALLY warming up to Span as our all-star rep.
  12. OK, time to get him out of there. It looks like the magic stops after six tonight.
  13. I've got a ticket to that game too. Maybe I'll see you there. I'll be the one wearing a Twins jersey.
  14. Way to go, Drew. Who said pitchers can't hit?
  15. Man, we've got to do better at the plate - Frankie deserves more run support than he's been getting. Let's hope he can give us a couple more good innings.
  16. Be careful - your tongue might poke all the way through your cheek.
  17. Interesting. They just said on the telecast that the opening home run Pittsburgh hit last night should have only been a ground rule double. Apparently (and they showed the rule) once it bounced off the fence it became a "bounding ball" which, if it goes out of play off a fielder, is only 2 bases.
  18. If I remember the discussion from last year, pitchers over here throw harder in general than over in Japan - he had a hard time adjusting to 90+ mph fastballs. It also sounded like they were less aggressive on the basepath, so he wasn't prepared for that - hence being in the wrong place leading to a broken leg. And, I think you have to chalk part of it up to bad scouting, too. $5M is not a lot of money in today's terms, but nobody except the Twins was willing to pay that - turns out everybody else was right.
  19. That leaves New Britain with only 10 pitchers. Wonder who they'll promote from Fort Myers - Watts? Fuentes?
  20. If you get a chance after you go, start a thread and tell us about your experience. I'll be down there in August and might go to one myself.
  21. Be advised also that there are no concessions, so bring your own snacks and refreshments.
  22. Hicks, Benson & Arcia are all top OF prospects. Benson has been struggling and was demoted from AAA earlier this year; Hicks has been holding his own but not excelling. Arcia was just promoted from high-A so he may struggle a little adjusting to higher quality ball, but he should come around in time. Top pitcher I would look for would be Hermsen - blew away the competition in Fort Myers, was promoted to New Britain, and has exceeded expectations at AA. Darnell is also a good prospect, but he has only been average this year. New Britain in general is really slumping right now - they've lost 12 of their last 16 games. They were in first place for a while, but have now slipped to 3rd, 5 games back.
