  1. Well, maybe they learned something, then. Pavano had a "right shoulder inflammation" and they thought he could play through it and it would gradually settle down - they even gave him extra time between starts. He ended up on the DL with a strain. At least this time they didn't bother trying to get Walters to pitch through it and have it get worse.
  2. So I was just reading that this year MLB pitchers are averaging 7.5 K/9 - the highest rate in MLB history. We just had our 2nd perfect game of the season, and the 4th in 3 years (5 if you count Galarraga's blown call). In that same 3 year period (2010-12) there have now been 14 no-hit games - over 5 per season average. That compares to just a tad over 2 per season average over the entire MLB history. Does anybody else think that the game is fundamentally changing for some reason, toward the side of more dominant pitching? Or is it just that hitting is on the decline throughout the majors? Yes, I know that the steroid is over and you would expect fewer HRs and a lower average slugging pct, but would that affect hitting across the board - singles as well as HRs? So what's up? Is this a temporary statistical anomaly what will work itself out over time? Or are we looking at a return to 1968 when the MLB decided steps needed to be taken to restore balance between hitting and pitching?
  3. Maybe I'm being overly cautious, but I have to ask if you all really want to do this? What if your story actually wins? How will you get the tickets? Do you really want to give your address or phone number to someone you met on a chatboard and know nothing about, to an ID that was created just for this thread?
  4. As per MLB website, PJ Walters has been placed on the 15-day DL effective today, 6/14.
  5. I don't know how hard he throws, but was lights out at Fort Myers and has pitched well at New Britain this year. From what I've heard, he could possibly be a back of the rotation starter, but more likely will end up in the bullpen, maybe doing middle relief? I'd like to see him move up to Rochester and see what he's got against better hitters and those who have major league experience.
  6. Slama's on the minor league 7-day DL, so he wouldn't show up on the MLB site. Technically, I think he can be called up and play since he isn't on the major league DL (anyone know this either way?), but the point is he is injured - bruised leg. Until that's healed, he's not pitching anywhere.
  7. I must admit I was surprised in the post-game interview when Gardy said he had no advance warning. I'm not going to say he was not truthful, but it did appear to me watching the game that he came out of the dugout pretty quickly after the first few batters. Don't you normally send out the pitching coach first, to settle things down and feel out the situation? And Manship was up and warming up even before Gardy got to the mound - at least that's the way it looked on TV. I also have to wonder, given what happened with Blackburn earlier, does anybody on the pitching staff really think they can get away with pitching injured without telling anyone? Wouldn't you have thought that, after that incident, they would sit their starters down and tell them in no uncertain terms, "Let us know if there's a problem warming up?" That's what I would have done.
  8. Or they send Parmelee down and go back to a 13-man pitching staff.
  9. As per Gardenhire, Lester Oliveros will be joining the Twins roster. A corresponding move will be announced after the results of Walters' MRI are known. Gardy did not look happy during the interview. He says there was no advance warning Walters was hurting.
  10. Interesting comments from Gardy in the post-game interview. He seemed to indicate there was no advance warning that Walters was hurting. Oliveros is coming up; corresponding roster move to be announced tomorrow after Walters MRI.
  11. I personally would like to see both - in the same night.
  12. OK, I don't like to second guess, but at this point you have to wish they hadn't tried to start Walters - without that 6-run lead spotted to Hamels we would be sitting pretty now.
  13. Unfortunately, with Walters getting pulled tonight and an MRI scheduled, it makes my initial question somewhat moot. He's not going anywhere, even if it might be best.
  14. And there goes Willingham. Didn't anybody tell the Twins and Phillies that this is a pitcher's ballpark?
  15. I can understand where you are coming from, but I have to admit it was fun to watch him hit another shot - even if it hurts us. It has nothing to do with liking losing, but in the short time he was here he really did connect with the fans, especially with his chase for 600 HRs. I don't know if you went to any games at Target Field the past couple of years, but I can tell you that a bond developed that is unusual with such a short stint, in part because it was clear in his interaction with the fans and the media that he is truly a class individual, and Minnesotans value that. I never want the Twins to lose, but at the same time I wish Thome all the best in whatever he does, and I thank him for the memories he left with me in the games I attended. Yes, he leads the league in HRs hit against the Twins (this was his 60th), but it was still a proud moment for us when he hit #600 in a Twins uniform.
  16. Yes, but my question is - why?
  17. And Swarzak is in now - so he can't be used for a start on Saturday.
  18. OK, I was probably being unfair when I questioned my motivation. Consider me contrite. I'm just trying to find an explanation for the drop-off in his performance. His first couple of years (2008-09) he pitched pretty well. Something has happened since we moved to the new ballpark (?) that caused him to drop sharply in effectiveness. I'd like to know what changed - if it wasn't his attitude it must be something else.
  19. But then they're going to need another starter anyway. I'm guessing they were going to bring up Hendriks for Saturday regardless - now if Walters goes out of the rotation, you need to replace him as well, hence DeVries.
  20. This will probably end the debate of what move to make. You keep Gray (ugh!), bring up Hendriks, and send Parmelee back to Rochester. Back to the 13-man pitching staff. And then, if Walters needs to go on the DL, it's welcome back Cole.
  21. They're going to need a true gem from Diamond tomorrow - the bullpen is going to be shot to *#*).
  22. Not that I'm trying to defend the decision to send him out, but I'm guessing that the fact they had to use five pitchers from the bullpen last night played a role in rolling the dice and seeing if Walters could do anything.
  23. His last couple of starts haven't been that great either - I'm guessing this is something that's been coming on gradually.
  24. Yeah, I don't know who makes those decisions - the manager, the pitching coach, the training staff. My guess is they were hoping it would loosen up and he might be able to get through the lineup at least once, take a few innings and reduce the workload on the bullpen a little. In hindsight, not a good call.
  25. Word just came on the telecast. Walters had right shoulder stiffness, and couldn't get loose during the warmup. He'll have an MRI tomorrow.
