  1. I'm confused. I thought the object of the game was to hit the ball with the bat...
  2. Amen. That's my one big complaint about the "moneyball" mindset some people have - statistics always tell you past performance; they make no promises about future performance. Use it as one tool to make baseball decisions, but never have it be the only tool you use when forming a team.
  3. Not to mention that if his SAD is that serious, he wouldn't be able to play anywhere. You think Minnesota doesn't have media and an active fanbase that can be critical at times? Ask Joe Mauer about that. He might not want to play in New York, but he could handle it if the money was big enough.
  4. I hope I'm wrong (I probably am) but I don't think Morneau will come back, at least not to what he was before. He may regain some form, but he'll never be like he was before 2010. I remember an interview he gave before the season started and it left me the impression that he knows he's in the tailend of his career and not the start. In other words, he's looking ahead to the day it's over. Now, that doesn't mean he's going to roll over and quit (I am not at all saying that) but I just got the impression that even he thinks his best days are behind him. I think this protracted concussion/injury thing the last 2 years has taken a toll on him mentally and moved him to a different place. I still think he has a role to play and can be productive, but the old Justin is gone.
  5. Should we trade Morneau for gold? Let's see - he weighs 220lbs, or 3,520 ounces. The current value of gold is about $1600/oz. That would total a touch over $5.6M. Go for it. We could invest that in the rotation.
  6. Another thing to add is, if this is a snub, who is the one who snubbed him? The answer: his fellow players and Texas manager Ron Washington. They are the ones who chose Mauer over Willingham. I think I'll defer to their judgment.
  7. We got fooled on this last year - chasing a false chance to contend and missing opportunities to restock the system at the trade deadline. Not this year.
  8. If you're going to use that argument, then we should have the all-star game in November - why should the games in Apr-Jun count more than those in Jul-Oct in picking who is an all-star or not.
  9. Earlier in the season I would have agreed with you, but Willingham has tailed off a little bit on recent performance compared to earlier in the year, and Mauer has caught fire in the last month. I think that tips the balance in his favor, although it is very close.
  10. Much as I would hate to see it and lose his defensive skills (I would love to see an outfield of Span, Revere & Mastroianni - nothing would fall in), I understand his value as a trade chip. But we had better get at least one player in return who is a very good bet to be starting in a couple years at most. I would be upset to see him traded for a handful of B prospects, none of whom may ever pan out.
  11. Don't get too casual here, guys. You still have to get that last out. Texas was one pitch away from winning the world series last fall twice, and ended up with nothing.
  12. A new record for Target Field - the first time the Twins have hit 4 HRs in a game here.
  13. Dang that Butera - can't he do anything right?
  14. Yes. These are the little things that all too often get unnoticed. Mauer battles Chapman and gets a double, wearing him down emotionally and setting up the Willingham homer. Butler tries to do the same thing here, but Burton wins the battle and prevents would could have been a nasty inning from happening.
  15. I think he's the best catcher defensively on the team. Now if he could only hit with regularity...
  16. Span has had a solid year defensively, and until recently was doing well at the plate. I would have considered him a possible candidate too, if he hadn't had a slump the past couple of weeks.
  17. This was all one inning too late. If they do this in the 5th and give Liriano a 5-run lead, he could have pitched with no pressure and gotten through six, maybe even seven.
  18. When you're the worst team in the American League, you only get one - and Mauer is deserving.
  19. That's one out of the movies. I'm glad Liriano doesn't take a loss on this.
  20. I don't think it was meant to be a sacrifice. He was trying to beat it out for a base hit.
  21. This is a worrying result for Liriano. Earlier in the season when he got in trouble, it deteriorated quickly - he couldn't find a way to buckle down and pitch his way out. After he came back from the bullpen, there were a few games when he was able to do that - bear down and get those last outs. It appears he is reverting back to original form.
  22. Well, I don't think Frankie deserved that. A couple of bad breaks and bounces that inning, and it costs him a chance at a win.
