  1. That was the point of the new CBA - they were trying to reduce the impact of "signability" (draftees deciding who they're going to play for by telling teams whether they would sign or not) on the draft by basically predetermining how much each pick would be worth. Obviously, agents hate the new rules, and I think Boras is intentionally trying to spike the system before it gets off the ground. We'll see if it works.
  2. Here's another thing Appel might want to think about if he's hoping to go go high next year and get a big signing bonus - he will then have a track record of being difficult to sign, which may cause other teams to look elsewhere. My guess, if he goes into next year's draft, is he falls again to mid 1st round.
  3. I also would like to see Casilla playing regularly. Is he our long-term 2B? No. But until we get one (whoever that is) he's the best option. Then you have a choice: play Dozier at short to get MLB experience and bench Carroll, or play Carroll at short and send Dozier down to Rochester. Granted, he won't get experience hitting MLB pitchers down there, but he will get experience fielding the position, which is I think his biggest liability right now. A shortstop in AAA gets just as many chances as a shortstop at MLB. Let him spend the rest of the year learning the position, and maybe next year he'll be better prepared for the show.
  4. So, if we have $21M available to maintain payroll at it's current level, does that have any implications for picking up options? Baker has a 9.25M option, and while he will be recovering from TJ surgery, I think a Baker at 90% is still better than a AAAA pitcher.
  5. Yes, but that was already in John's table.
  6. One minor correction: the numbers in USA Today only included those on major league rosters, so that $94M didn't include Nishioka. If that's added in, the payroll for this year is $97M. That means they can spend an additional $21M to what is listed in your article and keep payroll same as last year.
  7. Just out of curiousity, if he is drafted in similar position next year, and again chooses not to sign, how long before he can sign with anyone as a free agent? 1 year?
  8. Well, I don't know about the rest of you, but I have to work tomorrow. Hasta. Maybe the Twins will win in my dreams.
  9. I think we've found the problem - they're wearing the wrong caps! Didn't they change back over to the "M" caps earlier this year?
  10. Just went back and checked my box scores. Burton pitched the last two nights; he is probably unavailable.
  11. Nathan wasn't in a save situation. That being said, given the results, I can't argue. If the end up losing this, they're going to spend the next 4 days kicking themselves.
  12. Gardy's always been like that - he lets the "closer" get the job done or blow it completely - no half-way measures. In all fairness, most managers do the same thing. Closers are supposed to be your most reliable people in those situations - they're supposed to be able to pitch their way out of trouble. Perk did pitch 4 days in a row, but he had 2 days off after that, and this was only his 2nd game in 5 days. He should have been rested.
  13. Do you miss me???? Joe Nathan.
  14. The real loser here is Cole DeVries. He deserved a W tonight, and the Twins couldn't hold it.
  15. I just checked the rulebook. You are correct. My bad.
  16. That's doesn't excuse Perkins. Yes, those last two runs are "unearned," but Perkins can't blame anybody for them but himself.
  17. Oh, I love this "play the rookie so he can get experience" thing.
  18. Nope. Tactical decision by Washington.
  19. Well, here comes Perkins. Personally, I would have preferred Burton. He's been more reliable this year - Perkins has had a tendency this year to make things exciting, kinda like Capps.
  20. Man, nothing is going out in right. All things considered, though, I'm OK with that today.
  21. Wow, Nathan choking. A base hit now blows this open.
  22. Way to go, Casey. Through 'em a little chin music. Get the Texas bench all fired up.
  23. I would have sent DeVries out, with the understanding that the moment a runner got in scoring position, he was done.
