  2. Not a promotion but another transaction: Joe Benson is moved to Fort Myers. I would assume this is similar to what they did with Ramirez when he came off of injury - leave him in Fort Myers for a while (longer than a normal rehab stint) and then eventually move him back up to AA.
  3. There's going to be a backlash whatever he does or doesn't do. That's the fun part about being GM!
  4. No, he doesn't. To qualify you have to have one inning pitched per game the team as played. That means right now you need 83 innings. Liriano is the only one on staff who has that (83.1). Diamond has only 79. He'll probably qualify, though, after his next start.
  5. I hear what you're saying, and I remember those days too, but the game has changed. 4-man rotations have become 5-man rotations; pitching has become more specialized (closer, lefthanded setup, righthanded setup, 7th inning guy, LOOGY, etc.) There is also greater emphasis on how hard you throw, which wears out an arm quicker. Add in the DH in the American League and having bench subs available became less important. I don't think any of this is going to change - teams started doing it because it helped them win ballgames. Any team going back to the old school probably won't be competitive, not over the course of a whole season.
  6. That still leaves you with 13 pitchers, though. You have 13 now, you are adding Walters & Capps back, so it's 15, and sending Fien and Robertson down gets you back to 13. Somebody else has to go down if you want a 4th bench spot. You could send Waldrop down, or DFA Gray.
  7. Has anybody else been following the series in the Star Tribune on the Twins minor league affiliates? They've had some pretty good articles. I did notice, however, that they cut it off after Elizabethton - no coverage of GCL. I would have liked to seen one on them, and even the Dominican league. They always seem to get short shrift when the farm system is covered.
  8. I think it has less to do with carrying 3 catchers (although that is a bit unusual) and more that people here just don't like Butera because of his inability at the plate the previous 2 years. Personally I think he's done OK this year - solid defensively and his hitting has improved, although still needs to be better.
  9. Even then I'm guessing the gap would be less than it is now - that's how bad that start was.
  10. Yes, but that's because of the abysmal start. My guess is, throw out that first month and a half, and the rotation is inline with some of the other teams.
  11. Kansas City was next to last and had a starters ERA of 5.00 going into today.
  12. By my calculation, the Twins have now lowered the ERA of their starters to 5.77 - nice to see that dropping on a pretty steady basis.
  13. I do. I just saw the last two innings, but from what I saw he was struggling with his control again. He got out of it, but it just makes me so nervous. I truly want to believe he's turned the corner and "bad Frankie" is gone for good, but it's just requiring too much of a leap of faith at this point. This is one time, however, when I would be glad to be proved wrong.
  14. Good news from the farm - Walters pitched 5 scoreless innings for Rochester. Looks like he's ready to return.
  15. OK, he's losing it. Pull him before it's too late.
  16. Just got in from a late dinner - did I miss anything of note?
  17. Watching Frankie pitch out of trouble is like one of those rides at the amusement park that carry a warning for those who have heart conditions!
  18. Making way for a Sano promotion?
  19. My guess is they go back to 12 pitchers after the all-star break, with hopefully Walters ready to go, and Capps just about ready. They've got to make room on the roster for a 13th position player so they can bring Parmelee back up here. They need him to keep the seats on the bench warm for the other players.
  20. I'm guessing he's still on the 40-man and they don't have the websites updated. The same thing happened earlier this year when Parmelee was sent down for the first time. He also probably hasn't reported yet to Rochester (they have 3 days to report) so they might just have him on their reserve roster and not activated him yet.
  21. That makes this kind of interesting. It means he either stays in Minnesota the rest of the season, or they have to DFA him and have him clear waivers before he can be sent back.
  22. I don't know - watching the Detroit pitcher run over and knock down his own catcher was pretty good.
  23. It might not just be messing with his timing. His timing might be gone for good. Sometimes, especially after you turn 30, you don't bounce back. My greatest fear? It takes a full year plus to regain his timing, and we see the old Morneau return late next summer - just when his contract is about to expire. Then you have the problem of what do you do with him. Sign him to another big money contract? Let him be a free agent?
  24. Granted, this game got away from us, but let's look at the larger picture - if someone had told you Monday morning that the Twins would split with Detroit, in Detroit, would you have taken it?
  25. At least Diamond doesn't get tagged with the loss - he pitched a fine game.
