  1. Yep. Pitch was way low and outside and Carroll couldn't get wood on it.
  2. That was bad luck. Carroll tried to make contact on the bunt, but the ball was WAY out of the zone - almost a wild pitch.
  3. Fielder! Missed a tag twice at second trying to pick Mastroianni off!
  4. Good first trip through the lineup for Diamond. Hope he can keep this up. I don't fault them much for the putouts at the plate. Each time it was close and required a perfect throw. 2 out of 3 times at least 1 would get in.
  5. At last - a message board filled with intelligent, enlightened discussion with open-minded participants.
  6. I just don't know how we can take the chance on him - his last outing you began to see flashes of "bad Frankie" returning. Two months ago, most everyone said the best we could hope for was for Liriano to get hot, put together a good run of starts, generate some trade value, and then we could move him. Now that he's doing that, the thinking seems to be changing to keeping him, because maybe this time it's for real and for good. Isn't that the same logic that got us into trouble last year, when we had the poor run and everybody said we should sell before the trade deadline and get prospects, only for us to go on a good run and get fooled into thinking we could compete for the AL Central, so we made no moves, lost Cuddyer & Kubel, and got nothing in return? This is just the same thing. This latest run is fool's gold. Let's not be the ones who buy it ourselves.
  7. But what makes us think he would be any better than those? Have you seen his numbers this year? Awful. 6.84 ERA, 1.600 WHIP, .291 average against - just looks to me like he's out of gas.
  8. There has been a growing trend to make AA the jumping point for MLB, but it hasn't completely replaced AAA yet. Harper played in AAA this season before going up, although only for a few weeks (like Dozier, but with different results). Pitchers will almost always stop there first. AAA seems to be composed of 3 groups of players: 1) true prospects, although position players tend not to stay there long; 2) AAAA players, who are needed on the 40-man roster to provide injury coverage and need a place to play in the interim; 3) career minor leaguers, who will never play in MLB but are needed to make the AAA teams competitive (which is not unimportant for those who own those teams). Personally I would like to see AAA become more of a proving ground for prospects - if they can't succeed against AAAA players, then they aren't ready to play in MLB.
  9. Either Waldrop is afraid of the batters or he didn't take enough time warming up. He's nowhere near the strike zone.
  10. Man, we just can't get a starter past the 5th inning in this series. At least he was pitching well before he went down.
  11. Oh, that doesn't look good. Duensing down and probably out.
  12. WHY isn't this guy playing more? Good shot, Parmelee!
  13. They tried Swarzak at the start of the season. He's ineffective as a starter, when teams know he's going to pitch and can prepare for him. He doesn't make the adjustments necessary to go through a lineup 3 times. He's most effective when he comes in in long relief and pitches 2-3 innings, going through the order once. If you don't want Duensing, fine, but then you need somebody else.
  14. I would want either Jose Fernandez or Chad James.
  15. What do we need him for?
  16. What was his weight in 2008 and 2009, when he pitched fairly well?
  17. With respect, those numbers don't seem that bad to me. He has a lower WHIP and a higher K/BB ratio than any of those you listed. Thielbar was just recently promoted and needs time to see whether he can handle even this level, and Lanigan probably belongs in AA. Vasquez and Guerra are two other options, but Guerra has struggled recently and his numbers are getting worse, not better. There was no clear cut choice here, and Fien is as good as anything.
  18. Not a big surprise. Gardy hinted last night after the game that something would happen, and this makes sense. Fien is needed to shore up a bullpen that has been overused. It does mean they need a starter for Sunday - will Walters be ready, or will they call up French or Deduno?
  19. My guess - the Wild just sold out their building for the season.
  20. I wonder if there is anybody in the Twins front office watching and taking notes. This is how you excite a fanbase.
  21. I have to admit, I wonder about the inconsistency. They play Dozier every day, when Casilla/Carroll would be a better bet, because they want him to get big-league experience to help him develop. But then they let Parmelee sit, instead of getting big league experience. My own feeling is that Parmelee has more upside than Dozier.
  22. I agree that Casilla should get more playing time. You don't choose middle infielders for their hitting ability but for their field work. In that he is greatly improved this year, and a .244 average is not that bad at all. Florimon is only hitting .248 at AAA. Is Casilla the long-term future? No. But he's a good stop-gap until someone like Michael or Rosario in class-A can make the team in a few years.
  23. I don't think you can just write this off to "rust" anymore. He's had 261 plate appearances. The rust should be gone. Something is different with Justin, and unless it changes back he is not going to regain his old form. It's unfortunate, but sometimes people don't bounce back when they've been out as long as he was the past couple of years.
