  1. Hey, I loved watching him hit the bombs, but let's be honest - at the end he did get a bit big. I remember one time he came to the plate and the organist played "Roll out the barrel.":)
  2. You don't see that much - an outfielder trying to throw a runner out at first. I remember, at the end of Harmon's career, that sometimes worked - he singled to right field but couldn't get down the baseline in time to beat the throw.
  3. To give him credit, Blackburn is starting off nicely. He's throwing strikes, he's keeping the ball down in the zone, and while he's given up 3 hits, they haven't been hit that hard (a shallow fly into center, a broken-bat bloop, and a shallow single).
  4. Given that this is Blackburn pitching, I'm just glad it stayed in the ballpark.
  5. Han Solo: "I've got a bad feeling about this."
  6. OK, so he's probably not really in the running but you have to wonder if he should be. With their win today, Rochester is now over .500, and is only 4.5 games back of a playoff spot. That's in spite of being virtually dead last in hitting in the IL and only middle of the league in pitching. He loses just about his entire opening day rotation to the parent club, and yet they have gone from being dead last to being right in the mix with not quite a third of the season left. After two consecutive 90-loss seasons, it's nice to see them finally have some success.
  7. So you're in favor of offering him $12M for next year? That's the only way you get a draft pick if he leaves - offering that much and having him turn it down.
  8. What's wrong with keeping Rochester? From what I've heard they have a good working relationship. The biggest tension the past couple of years has been the quality of players available to Rochester (because the farm system sucks), but this year they are above .500 and are actually within shouting distance of a playoff spot. I don't see any real value from having a farm club in close proximity to the parent organization - plane fares from Rochester aren't going to be that much more than from Indianapolis.
  9. That's just like my golf game - except for the being accurate with the mid irons part.
  10. First time since last year I've been glad Thome wasn't a Twin - anybody else trying to run that out beats the relay to first.
  11. Wow. Talk about dodging a bullet here. Who woulda thought Dozier would be the hero in this inning?
  12. Half error each to Plouffe and Mauer on that one.
  13. OK, that's it - I have had it. I am calling for a boycott on all Twins ticket sales until they deep six those amazingly annoying "sorta deep thoughts" commercials.
  14. DeVries has really settled down nicely. At 96 pitches, do you send him out for the 7th? He's on a roll right now - 9 straight batters retired.
  15. I'm also following the Rochester game while I watch the Twins - looks like they are heading into positive territory finally. They are up by 5 in the 6th inning. If they win, they'll be 50-49 on the season.
  16. Just saw that Bert Blyleven has responded to Reggie Jackson's comments on whether he belongs in the hall of fame: "God gives us many holes in our body, and he just spoke out of the wrong one. That's the way I look at it." He did say that Jackson called him to apologize and it is now water under the bridge.
  17. OK, here we go. Third time through the order. Here's where we see what DeVries is made of today.
  18. Good at-bat for Casilla - kept himself in there and finally got the sacrifice.
  19. That's his first ground out of the game.
  20. I did some more websurfing to see if I could track that down again. Turns out it's not a new stadium, but they are going upgrade Hammond Field. Fort Myers has agreed to put in $30M, but the Twins are asking for upgrade totalling around $45M, including dorms for players so they don't have to put people up in area hotels. They'll probaby meet somewhere in the middle.
  21. I seem to recall something about the Twins-Fort Myers relationship being tied to a new spring training complex, like the one they just built for Boston. It sounded like they were making good progress on that in getting it approved.
  22. No, he doesn't. He's a straight free agent after this year. The $12M number some people are floating around is what would be required to be offered to him in arbitration in order for the Twins to get a draft pick as compensation if he declines, under the new CBA. We trade him now, or we probably end up with nothing for him when he signs with someone else in the offseason.
  23. I understand the allure of wanting to resign Liriano, being as starved for pitching as we are. If this happens, though, just be warned of the potential of 2/3/4 years (however long his extension is) of "I told you so" if he tanks again. We will be merciless.
  24. The problem is that, given his track record, the next start could just as easily be the reverse - 2 IP 6 ER. I'd love to be able to believe that this time is for real, but when you get burned, it's hard not to be skittish about playing with fire.
