  1. Pitchers are the best athletes on the field.
  2. I was making the same argument, that his defense warranted his place in the lineup, earlier this year, back when he was hitting around .240. He's fallen off at the plate, though, the past month or so, and it's harder to make that argument now. With the acquisition of Escobar and with Nishioka starting to shape up in Rochester, I would be very surprised if he is offered arbitration after the season is over. I agree fully on Carroll.
  3. I've been lobbying for a call-up of Logan Darnell from New Britain.
  4. I don't know if I'd put him ahead of Sano or Buxton, but certainly he is the closest to being MLB-ready of any of our top prospects.
  5. Trading Young was never a matter of trying to get something back - it was a matter of getting rid of a player who had checked out and was no longer a positive influence. I remember watching as a ball went over his head and hit the wall, and then watching the CF have to run over and pick it up and throw it back in because Young just stood there watching. In Young's case, it was addition by subtraction - we were a better team just for getting him out of the clubhouse.
  6. I concur with the sentiment. The difficulty is going to come in assessing who is going to be a part of the team in 2-3 years. I suspect there will be vast disagreement among fans about that. For example, Liriano. Do we keep him or trade him? I would say trade, but quite a few have suggested signing him to a 3-year contract on the hopes he puts his difficulties behind him and fulfills his potential. Certainly, if he does that, he would play a very important role 2-3 years down the road. Same for Baker. I also think (and I know many disagree with me) that you put Span in that category - he is young enough that he can significantly add to this team in 2015 if we keep him that long. I would, however, trade Willingham - I just don't see him starting in 2015 - and Carroll too, if you can get anything for them. So it all comes down to who you keep and who you jettison - as usual, the devil lies in the details.
  7. Gardenhire deserves better than to be fired mid-season. Yes, he has a poor record in the playoffs, but he's gotten us to the playoffs more than any other manager we've had. That in itself earns him the right to depart in dignity after the season is over.
  8. I have to concur. I think Gardy has been a fine manager, and has added far more than he's cost us. But after a while it's easy for a manager, for players, and for an organization to fall into a rut, to get hemmed in by comfortable patterns without even realizing it. That's the value in periodically bringing in new blood and fresh voices. I wouldn't make a move mid-season, but maybe the understanding on all sides that, after this season, it's time to move on.
  9. I would guess not. Elizabethton is probably going to be in the playoffs, and even if they get eliminated in the first round there would only be a couple of days left before the Beloit regular season ends. I don't know what their rules are about Single-A playoff rosters, but I doubt they'd move somebody for only a couple of games.
  10. Yes, I know that, I watched the games, all of them, and I stand by my assessment that their gold medal was not a fluke due to luck or small sample size - they were the best team at the tournament, and not because they had the best players.
  11. Yes, talent is a necessary component of success, but it is not a guarantee of success. That talent also has to be fit into a system that allows it become more than the sum of the individual parts. You need team chemistry and synergy. This debate reminds me of the 1980 winter olympics and the U.S. hockey team. Herb Brooks didn't pick the most talented players at the training camp, he picked the players that would best fit into the system he was going to build. Did they have individual talent? Absolutely. But purely on an individual basis they were NOT the most talented hockey players at Lake Placid. Put together in the right way, though, they did become the most talented team in those games.
  12. After today's performance, I can't wait for tomorrow's game.
  13. Oh, good, the bullpen has the game now.
  14. I don't have gamecenter or anything on so I can't see where they tracked; I was just going by what I happened to catch on replays for hits. It looked to me like some of them were kept down in the zone and to the sides of the plate, and yet still got hammered. That last homer, however, was a different matter.
  15. This thread is starting to remind me of the movie "The Natural": "What is losing? Losing is a disease as contagious as polio. Losing is a disease as contagious as syphilis. Losing is a disease as contagious as bubonic plague, attacking one but affecting all. But curable. Imagine you are on a ship at sea..." Good film but I wish they hadn't changed the ending from the book.
  16. Maybe it's just me (I'm only partially following the game as I work on something else), but the last few hits seem to have come off some not-too-bad pitches. Looks like Chicago did a good job scouting where Blackburn likes to throw the ball.
  17. At least we're getting the game out of the way early today - leaves plenty of time to drown our sorrows in whisky later.
  18. Let's start by hiring an elementary teacher - before they do anything else they need to learn how to count to three.
  19. I assume nobody is surprised that Willingham is DHing after his field performance yesterday.
  20. I believe that; baseball in Florida in the summer is a tough sell, even indoors. Tampa has the same problem. Even with the bump, they were still in the bottom half of the league - just near the top of that bottom half, instead of near the very bottom.
  21. I'll be interested to see how this affects their attendance. They have been in the bottom five of MLB for a dozen years now, and for the first time they've risen above that (new ballpark!). This salary-dump/rebuild-for-a-run-3-years-down-the-road will probably send that back into the toilet. My guess is a few hardcore fans (from "Marlins Daily" no doubt:)) are ecstatic at the forward-looking approach Miami is taking, while the average fan sees them getting rid of the players that made the team interesting for them.
  22. True, but then that's not why we got him. I see him as a bridge for a couple of years until some of the talent in the minors [insert derisive laugh here] is ready.
  23. I was wondering about that myself. I was reading somewhere (KFAN website?) that the Twins are going to change their approach and try to get their starters to go deeper, average around 115-120 pitches per game, because of the overuse the bullpen has been getting. So why pull DeVries at 95 pitches with a 2-run lead? He certainly couldn't have done any worse than the bullpen did.
