As far as CF depth, if necessary we do have Clete Thomas. Yes, he's not on the 40-man, but room could be made. And unlike Benson, Thomas has actually been effective this year...
I don't have any inside knowledge, but I doubt this is about "attitude" issues. My guess is that this is about non-performance, clear and simple, and the fact that the clock has just about run out on him anyway.
Is that "20 teams passed on him" thing accurate? I thought in waivers every team in your own league had a shot before the other circuit did. If Texas took him, then there must have been 13 other teams that passed - unless they've changed the way waivers works.
As far as letting him go for nothing, that's what they were looking at next year as well, when he was out of options and probably would still not be ready for the major league roster. As far as trading, who would trade for him, given his recent track record and the knowledge he will be available for free in a few months anyway - it's not as if he was going to contribute to a contender in a pennant run.
I think we're using a different definition of casual fan. When I think casual fan, I think someone (usually a family) who doesn't really follow the Twins but who likes to go out a couple of times a year and spend an afternoon or night at the ballpark, usually as a family activity. They don't read the sports pages looking for insights on the teams future competitiveness, nor do they really care what the won-loss record is. And, while a win is always more fun than a loss, they are probably more concerned about food options than about the quality of the rotation. And just so there is no misunderstanding, I think there is nothing wrong with that and with the club making efforts to increase the quality of their game-day experience. They also are welcome at the table.
The problem comes when the differences are significant, not small. Particularly in pitching, Fangraphs WAR and BR WAR can have a large difference. That's like having one person appraise your house at $300K and another appraise it at $150K - you haven't really learned anything.
I have to admit, I'm not up on who's who in the field of baseball journalism. That said, I did a quick google search and came up with nothing on him. Can someone fill me in on his background? Is he affiliated with the traditional media in some way? Is he a blogger? Just how much credibility should I be giving him?
Per Twins website - Arcia sent down to make room on the active roster for Walters. We'll hear later today what they do to make room on the 40-man. This means we're back at 13 pitchers again, which I guess is not that much of a surprise given how much we've had to turn to the bullpen recently.
That may have contributed to his funk, but at the end of the day I can't hold the Twins responsible for that. If he is that fragile mentally, this was going to happen eventually regardless. Nobody goes through a major league career without facing times of adversity. Having the mental toughness to get through that is part of what major league baseball is about. Actually best to find that out before you get to the point where you pencil him in to an every day lineup. Personally I'm hoping he catches fire and fulfills his potential. I'm just skeptical about it happening.
I don't know if he is covered either, but I seriously doubt he would have a grievance either way. The only question is - are the Twins moves permitted within the terms of the CBA and the Rules of baseball. If the answer is yes then, whatever the motivation and regardless if it is the smartest move or not, there is nothing that is actionable.
I haven't bothered to go back and review statistics from 1876 to the present, but I'm going to go with the percentages here and say "No." Or, was this not a serious question?
When I toured the farm system last year and saw all the teams I got to compare their game-day experiences. The A affiliate was Beloit, not Cedar Rapids, so I don't know how they compare, but I found the best experience, including promos, in New Britain. Elizabethton was a close second.
Just out of curiosity, why are you so high on Bruno as batting coach? Our young guns aren't exactly tearing up the league right now - our veterans either, for that matter. I'm not saying that's Bruno's fault, but merely that I haven't really seen any sign that he has made a difference yet either.
The problem with this, of course, is that he only has a one-year contract - next year he's a free agent anyway, unless we agree to an extension with him, and right now that just ain't happening.
I disagree. Pelfrey has no incentive to accept assignment. He gets paid his guaranteed salary whether he plays another day in the Twins organization or not. If the Twins seek to outright him to Rochester, I see him asking for his release (as he is entitled to do) and then seeking a position with another team, who would probably sign him to an MLB-minimum deal, leaving the Twins to pay the balance of his salary. That's what happened to Marquis last year.
