  1. I would hope they're long-past worrying about burning one of a soon-to-be-26 year old's option years... so hopefully, wrong. I mean, the club needs as many data points on their projected 2017 catching situation as possible. Is there a legitimate reason that Garver can't both get a call-up and play AFL ball?
  2. Good points overall, prospect catchers develop at the slowest rate of all prospects- with good reason. The Twins made a decision early on to put Turner on the faster track with respect to Garver- he clearly had/has the better tools to play the position in the majors. He also beat Garver out for the Bench award in college. Garver took the whole situation as a challenge, and he has clearly responded in exactly the way the Twins had hoped he would. I have to object to your characterization of Garver's season in Ft Myers, though. His underlying numbers were sterling among all catchers in a very tough, power-starved, pitchers' league. FSL numbers: 1st in OBP, 1st in IsoD, 1st in BB%, 3rd in wOBA, 3rd in wRC+. Garver's FSL numbers were also skewed by an outlying BABIP of .287 relative to his minor league career BABIP of .311 for A ball and above and .335 if you throw out his year at Ft Myers. Garver has a great eye at the plate and can hit for some power. To further support the case, his offensive production in the AA Southern League was far superior to past Southern League catchers who became decent-hitting major leaguers, like Vogt, Lake and Gattis.
  3. What's to miss? He's still here... collecting a paycheck, plenty of 2016 blame can be directed his way too... as he's providing his very "Special Assistant to the GM" insights on who gets called up to the majors... no doubt based on which prospect is battling his tail off and which one is really gettin' after it...
  4. So if I'm reading this right, it's still mathematically possible, if not probable, that the Lookouts could have the best overall SL record and not make the playoffs? Arghh, minor league baseball..
  5. Great to see that you now acknowledge that Maddon and Epstein do indeed represent "progress" in baseball terms, whereas in the past we frequently locked horns each time some of us philosophically supported both of them in their moves and machinations and you took the opposing POV.
  6. But that's exactly what the beat writers, opinion writers and bloggers have been suggesting is Tonkin's destiny for 3 years now (presumably with encouraging whispers from the Twins coaches and management). Tonkin and his straight FB and inability to hold runners appears to have slightly better upside in an Anthony Swarzak-type role. (BTW, interesting to note Swarzak's increased velocity and K/9 rate since leaving the Twins- both numbers comparable to Tonkin)
  7. If that's all it takes, I'd say that Chargois and Wimmers as fellow RPs have a reason to complain, as well as SPs Wheeler, Berrios and even Albers and Darnell.
  8. Yep, I'm on the exact page with clutterheart. Coming fresh out of high school, Kiriloff has indeed had a terrific start to his pro career, but the Twins played this one exactly right, given that he's tailed off badly in the dog days of August- re- in his last 17 games (68 PAs), here's his line: .167/.250/.295/(.545) As with all prospects, it remains to be seen how well he performs when he eventually reaches the upper minors, so far Kiriloff looks like a great pick by the Twins, but by the same token, nobody as of yet has accused him of bearing any resemblance to Bryce Harper.
  9. More "good news". With the current 10 game losing streak, the Twins have now climbed down to within one game of the Braves in the race to the bottom and the resultant grand prize of the #1 overall 2017 draft pick.... so there's that to shoot for, as well. In that regard, I hope the Twins haven't failed to plan for a plan to fail over the last 31 games.
  10. The only good news that immediately comes to mind is that the club has indicated that they are finally ready to enter the 21st Century and do what many of us have been asking for for most of this century (and what most other clubs have recognized is critical to on-field success in the ever-complexifying game of baseball) - ie- going outside of the insular Twins culture and hiring a President of Baseball Operations who presumably in turn will hire a hungry, youngish and degreed with a highly mathematically/systems-oriented pedigree as the new GM. Oh, and the other good news? Only 31 games left for the Twins faithful to be forced to endure.
  11. Heh. Got that right. MLB 1B averages: wOBA- .333 wRC+- 107 Mauer's averages: wOBA- .336 wRC+- 109 Sooo, Mauer is slightly better than average
  12. Another way to look at Mauer's year among 1B (and more meaningful): wRC+- 109 (ranked 19th) wOBA- .336 (ranked 20th) UZR/150- 2.0 (ranked 8th) fWAR- 1.5 (ranked 14th) Pretty mediocre #s in a net down season for all MLB 1st baseman.
  13. Thread Winner... From the Talking Heads/Jonathan Demme movie of the same name: "We've got an Outfielder that's better than that..." Stop Making Sense
  14. Apt choice of words ("pathetic"works here, too...)
  15. *** Loyalty Test failed (apparently.... lolzz ) "Affiliates!" (Or else you're not a "True" Twins fan)
  16. *** and people also are perfectly capable of pointing out utterly illogical roster moves that do nothing to salvage a lost season and miss out on at least a chance of enhancing the future of the Twins.
  17. Concur with your concurrence.
  18. Actually, I never said that Vargas was "out of the organization"... in point of fact, I made a comment such that it seemed likely after his demotion in May, 2015, that Vargas was likely no longer in the Twins' long-term plans. And as time progressed and Vargas remained AAA-banished, local beat writers, bloggers and even national scribes concurred.
  19. "People" wanted to keep REX, unfortunately, the real ROBBIE finally showed up.
  20. A) Out of the organization. Perhaps as a sweetener in a bigger deal. Who said he was DFAd? C) Being out of options after 2016 and him not getting a realistic chance to stick either last year or this year is pretty important information on how he has been evaluated by the club. And then you add in the fact that in the offseason they gambled on signing a long-term deal with a FA slugging 1B from the AA-level KBL... yeah, I'd say we're working with more than just mere speculation here. D) We actually have more than "zero information". It's pretty clear that even if the GM for next year is unknown, the manager seems firmly ensconced through 2017, at least, and he has most definitely demonstrated that he is not a Vargas fan. (After everything that transpired with Vargas in 2015, I predicted in May, 2015 that Vargas' long-term future with the club was over- nothing has changed to change that prediction)
  21. Based on how Vargas was mis-handled one year ago in May- a month during which in the offensively challenged teams' line-up, he was the Twins best hitter by far... he was summarily demoted and likely banished from any future consideration as an integral part of the club, (You Can't Make This Up- Vargas' May 2015 batting slash/line- .366/.395/.561/(1.056) wOBA .412 OPS+ 164).... I honestly believe the Twins at that moment wrote him off as far as being any part of their future plans. His success this year after his emergency call-up likely came as an uncomfortable shock to both the manager and management and had to be nipped in the bud. Extremely unlikely that he'll be with the organization in 2017.
