1. This is not a good comp at all. Adams has had injury problems and his size is nothing like the elfin Carroll- Adams is 6'1"/205#s and turns only 26 in May. His bat is different from Carroll, as well- 133WRc+ at AA with a slash of: 307/387/468/855 Carroll at AA: 283/355/370/725 For that matter as a 3B depth option, here are Plouffe's AA numbers:

.272/ .326/ .410/ .736

. .

There is question because of his recent injury if he can still play the MI (ps, not having strong range and arm defines you as a potential second baseman), but he is definitely better than a fringe prospect and it would be foolish for the Twins to not kick the tires on this one- there are still plenty of truly fringy players that haunt the Twins 40 man roster that could get kicked without harm to the team.
2. Here're the 2011 numbers: Team Value $490 mi
1-Yr Value Chg. 21% Ann. Value Chg. 9% Debt/Value 20% Revenue $213 mil Operating Income $26.5 mil
Player Expenses $112 mil Gate Receipts $100 mil Versus the numbers from 2012 (both from Forbes): Team Value $578 M 1-Yr Change 13% Annualized Change 8% Revenue2 : $214 M Operating Income3 : $10.8 M Debt/Value4 : 17% Player Expenses5 : $122 M Gate Receipts6 : $90 M Their appear to be some accounting gimmicks in the amortization of long-term salaries (or medical calamity writedowns?), which year-over-year were actually cut, not raised to $122M. And they appeared to not pay down debt. Significantly, in a disastrous cost-cutting and declining attendance year, revenues actually increased marginally (higher ticket and concession prices and more media money, I presume).
3. I'm as optimistic about Hicks as most anyone, but it's not realistic to suppose the offensive numbers he put up this spring, or anything close to it, are sustainable. If you look at Hicks minor league slash, nothing above AA mind you, (271/379/421/800) with Span's major league slash (286/355/356/711), coupled with what Hicks has shown thus far in CF, it's easy to project that Hicks will be better than Span at some point, but it's hard to say based on ST results that he's better than Span right now. And I don't think the Twins are overly concerned about retaining Morneau, except at their price (hometown discount).
4. Hicks is the first of the apprentices from the next wave. Realistic Twins fans should expect struggles early and often (it's certainly in Hicks' career MO, I expect at least one short-term demotion to AAA), amidst the glimpses of potential greatness from each and every one of the next wave coming up this year, 2014 and 2015.
5. Is there a way an intrepid reporter can discover how significantly St Peter and Ryan personally benefit by not spending available dollars? If there was a trust fund set up for excess revenues that is dedicated for doling out on payroll, say over a 5-year span, this off-season set of maneuvers (or lack thereof) would be easier to swallow. But as it stands, it appears that no monies "saved" in one year actually accrue to a forward point in time when the monies could theoretically be put to use more wisely. One can only assume that the "cost savings" end up in FO executive bonus packages and into the owners pockets- thus making St Peters' comment insulting to a community that publicly financed his sandbox.
6. Ask any accountant, it's all about the EBITDA, especially the "DA". Bottom line, the cash is flowing just fine, and will continue to do so, even with the looming decline in revenues.
7. Hate to snow on your parade but there's this to consider: Scientists Warn Of Ice Age | The Global Warming Policy Foundation (GWPF)
8. Exactly right, a payroll as low as $55M is easy to envision in 2014. Tread carefully on this topic though, the pitchfork and torches crew subculture on TD has called for banning for uttering such heresies in the past.
9. Well stated. I don't mind cutting the payroll if there were cheap alternatives ready to begin their apprenticeship, but as you pointed out, there are glaring areas in need where they don't even have apprentices ready to get out on the field and take their lumps like the early-to-mid-80s Twins teams. In addition to the positions you mentioned, the Twins still need to address issues like: 1) acquiring a long-term full-time replacement at catcher, 2) the jury is still out on 3B- both in regards to the short-term with Plouffe- and the long-term with Sano 3) the same scenario goes with Dozier and Rosario at 2B 4) the Twins ongoing and glaring indifference to strengthening and adding depth at the most important field position, SS, is mind-boggling Regarding the pitching staff, I would set the Over/Under at 2.5 for "Full Maloneys". The offseason "bolstering" was clearly unacceptable given the Twins personnel and financial situations. That's why myopic national writers who write articles like this are annoying: Richard Justice: Terry Ryan pitching in to help Twins return to contention | twinsbaseball.com: News
10. That's assuming the Twins don't decide to go and select all "toolsy" again, especially if they think they can't sign your top of the rotation type at slot value.
11. Was there supposed to be an asterisk after the "awesome" characterization or a sarc tag after the OP title?
12. Pitchers have more value, especially when they're 4 years younger, if the Twins really have a need to upgrade at catcher (which I strongly advocate), they should have looked at other options.
13. He's not called the wise one for nuthin...
14. 1) ...And too many fans... 2) Payroll was slashed by more like 20%, ex- Blackie, Butera and Capps obligations, more like 25%+
15. That's the lumps of coal in the Christmas stocking.

17. The quitting began with the veterans. The club was absolutely dead in the water until the one mini-run they had in June and early July, which took place with a crazy-quilt lineup of SPs no one had ever heard of before and rookies and fringe players making up a significant portion of the lineup. It's funny that some posters have played the "whipping boy" issue as an indictment on the fans. Gardy is expert at throwing collective blame for failure on his favorite whipping boys, usually the less-established youngsters.
18. The frustration is misplaced in this case. The 2012 roster construction that took place in the offseason, ST and early regular season (or lack thereof), included envisioning Willingham in RF, Revere in LF, Doumit playing OF and C (and not DH), Morneau at full-time DH, Parmelee at 1B, Carroll as full-time UTIL IF, Dozier at SS, Valencia at 3B, Plouffe as platoon RF/SuperUtil... In short, a mess that can be layed at the feet of the FO, not Gardy.
19. Uhh, are you responding to the wrong person? As my comments indicated, I'm most definitely in your camp on this issue.
20. Actually, there was an 11 year period, ending in the late 60s, when teams could carry 28 players on their active roster for the first 30 days of the season, before 1957, clubs could theoretically carry up to 40 players for the first 30 days. And conversely, in the late 80s, clubs had the option of carrying only 24 players, if they so chose.
21. All it would take is an injury to Encarnacion or Lind laying an egg at DH for the Blue Jays to come a calling. I think they think this is their year and be willing to absorb the remainder of the contract, and they would probably lay down an attractive offer for Morneau besides, Morny's already hinted fondly at closing out his career in Canada.
22. These characteristics will play well if Gardy is still here...let's see...."Santana-ee really gets after it"...er, maybe, "Sant-ee"?
23. 3) You must be referring to the "new all right", you know: 4-5 runs given up over 5-6 innings, just sufficient enough to at least keep the Twins in the game... 4) Hicks has shown enough this spring, that the alternatives, what few there are, would be woefully worse, no matter how much he might struggle at times. Maybe one short-term "demotion" is possible, but he'd be called back up a lot faster than Parmelee was last year. 5) I'm still wondering if that month happened last year or was it all a dream. Bruno might be the key here in making your prediction come to fruition, you get both Plouffe and Parmelee mashing down at the bottom of the order and the season will become a lot more enjoyable.
